Nelson Mandela's life and the impacts he made are of course common knowledge. A little less renowned, however, is the true extent of his involvement in sporting events and public relations over the years.

While his appearances at the conclusion of South Africa's World Cups in 1995 (rugby union) and 2010 (football) are as legendary as his political journeys, Mandela wined and dined with sporting icons across a host of events and disciplines all around the globe.

So with that in mind, we hope you enjoy our pick of 10 great Nelson Mandela sporting moments.

  • "Everyone knows what a class player he is. For us it's a big bonus but for him personally it is disappointing. I hope he comes back strong after whatever it is" - Peter Siddle is, erm, sympathetic to Trott’s plight

    - -

"The way that Trotty got out today was pretty poor and weak. Obviously there's a weakness there and we're on top of it at the moment" - David Warner gave a scathing assessment of Trott’s performance before the batsman withdrew from the tour

"I don't feel it is right that I'm playing knowing that I'm not 100% and I cannot currently operate at the level I have done in the past.

    1. Andy Murray

Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon for 77 years when he overcame Novak Djokovic in the final in July. That, together with his hugely emotional appearance on a BBC documentary in which he discussed surviving the Dunblane massacre, made him the most searched-for star of the year.

  • Ryan Giggs turns 40 today and is still going strong, playing at the top level for Manchester United.

It's hard to believe the changes in the world that have taken place since November 29, 1973: amazing inventions, earth-shattering political upheavals, iconic films and books which have changed the cultural landscape.

There are dozens of many things which feel they happened an age ago or like they've been around forever, but came into existence after Lynne Giggs brought little baby Ryan kicking and screaming into the world at St David's Hospital in Cardiff, 40 years ago.

    So in honour of his

  • The British legends who were snubbed by Sports Personality

British sport is currently riding the crest of a wave.

While football, the national game, fails to compete at world level, other sports have thrived over the last decade and, supplemented by the runaway success of the Olympics last year, the country looks to have a success-laden future.

Since 1954, sporting excellence has been celebrated through the award of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. A list of 10 hopefuls are announced in late November, which are then voted upon by the British public with the ceremony held in December to crown a winner.

The fact that only three recipients - Nigel

  • Mourinho thinks he looks cool… but so did these clowns

Jose Mourinho was inordinately proud of his the new haircut that he showed off to the world at his press conference on Monday - and even prouder of how it came about.

"I did it myself!" he told the assembled members of the press. "I asked Fernando [Torres] to give me his machine and I did it myself in front of the mirror! It is nice and it is cheap."

And even cheaper, of course, when you don't even have to buy your own "machine" - which turned out to be a set of clippers, incidentally, rather than the sort of £50,000 "Head-o-matic 3000" device that you might have been imagining.

Here we pick out the five most memorable matches between the two sides...

    5. Division One, 1982 (Goodison Park) - Everton 0-5 Liverpool

This will be the first, but not the last, mention of Ian Rush on this list. • Quotes of the Week: ‘It’ll be nothing without me!’

“A World Cup without me is nothing to watch” – Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s typically modest response to Sweden’s play-off defeat to Portugal.

    --

"I know Portugal needed me in these matches and I showed that I am here" – Cristiano Ronaldo after firing a hat-trick in the 3-2 win over Sweden.

    --

“What about (Andros) Townsend’s shot that hit the post? Is that not on target? I rest my case” – A flustered Roy Hodgson appears unaware what constitutes a ‘shot on target’ when quizzed about England’s lack of chances during the 1-0 defeat to Germany.

  • Nine of the worst ever garments worn by sports stars

Barcelona star Lionel Messi was awarded a record third Golden Shoe trophy after finishing with the most league goals in Europe last season.

Scoring 46 times in La Liga was indeed a remarkable achievement and one which deservedly earned him the reward.

However, it was the outfit that he wore which grabbed most of the headlines and responses on social media, with the Argentine sporting a frankly horrendous floral jacket.

He may have won no prizes for his dress sense, but Messi is far from the worst culprit when it comes to such fashion mistakes as this list acknowledges.

So here are nine of the
