Critics have blamed corporate and media tickets for the empty seats on Wimbledon's Centre Centre Court on Monday.
BBC presenter Gary Lineker said on Twitter: "Lots of empty seats on centre court. Corporate lethargy no doubt. What a waste of tickets so many could give their right arm for #wimbledon."
A spokesman for the All England Club pointed out that people leave their seats to get refreshments due to being in all-day seats.
The criticism follows the problems at London 2012 last summer when organisers were berated for distributing tickets to sponsors and media prompting empty seats at several venues.
