Playful squirrel charms crowd at US Open

Tennis's Grand Slams are magnificent sporting occasions, but let's be honest about it: in the early stages there are more than a few matches that aren't exactly mouthwatering prospects.

So we imagine that fans who had tickets for the court 11 clash between France's Julien Benneteau and Belgium's Olivier Rochus in the first round of the US Open had few hopes of seeing the match again later on the daily highlights show.

How wrong they were, though: a cheeky squirrel decided to interrupt their match in the second set, leading to a brief interruption as the fluffy-tailed rodent hopped around to investigate before whizzing off beneath the stands.

Benneteau, who was leading 7-6 3-1 at the time, seemed distinctly non-plussed by the appearance of the local wildlife, but shrugged off the interruption to win the match 7-6 6-2 6-3.
