World of Sport knows little about cross country skiing. But we'd always assumed that skiing poles and ice would mix about as well as hot knives and butter. Surely they'd cause cracks and whatnot?
So when we saw cross-country skier Sergey Ivanov on Russia's Lake Baikal going across a hard-frozen lake on his skis, using his poles to propel himself, we assumed that we were wrong.
But no. Turns out we had it right all along. The poles do indeed make the ice crack, as this chap found out with very, very chilly consequences.
