THE FLAG-GATE CONTROVERSY

"We were angry because our players were introduced as if they were from South Korea, which may affect us greatly as you may know. Our team was not going to participate unless the problem was solved perfectly and fortunately some time later, the broadcasting was corrected and shown again live so we made up our mind to participate and go on with the match. If this matter cannot be solved, we thought going on was nonsense. Winning the game cannot compensate for that thing." (North Korea coach Sin Ui-gun)

"Of course the people are angry. If your athlete got a gold medal and put the flag probably of some other country, what happens?" (North Korea's IOC member Ung Chang)

"It was unfortunate and should not have happened. This was an honest mistake, honestly made, an apology has been made and I'm sure every step will be taken to make sure these things don't happen again. We shouldn't over-inflate this episode. It was unfortunate, it shouldn't have happened and I think we can leave it at that." (Prime Minister David Cameron moves swiftly in to have his say)

"The South Korean flag was shown in the video package on the screen before the kick-off and the North Koreans were naturally very upset about that. We have made a full apology to the team and the North Korean NOC (National Olympic Committee). A genuine mistake was made." (Hampden Park media manager Andy Mitchell)

"She showed no respect for a basic Olympic value and unfortunately she is out. She made a mistake and in life we pay for our mistakes." (Greek mission chief Isidoros Kouvelos)

"Paula is always a concern. She is on a thin line every day for the last decade. Nothing has changed." (GB athletics coach Charles van Commenee)

"The principle is that if a club does not release a player then this association can come to FIFA and we will then ban this player during the duration of the Olympics." (Sepp Blatter on Gareth Bale pulling out of the Olympics, only to play and score for Tottenham)

"People ask me how I can sleep at night and why I am so relaxed... the honest answer is the quality of the people I know are out there working while I'm asleep. " (Lord Seb Coe gets all emotional ahead of the Games)

"There is everything in this squad; youth, experience, enthusiasm, speed, technical ability and a good manager. There is no reason why we can't do well. It is a strong tournament but if we work hard and turn up on the day, I am sure we will be amongst the medals." (Ryan Giggs)

"I don't place the blame on Kenny (Dalglish) and assistant Steve Clarke but I think it was obvious to every fan that something was wrong and something needed to be done. The FA Cup would not have made any difference had he won it. For us we were 17th over the second half of the season and Liverpool should not be in that position." (Liverpool owner John W Henry)

"I'm ready to sit down and talk to Chelsea whenever they want to but it's not the same as when you are 25. Then they come to you or you knock the door down with a couple of years to go to extend it. When you get into your thirties you accept it's not that way any more." (Frank Lampard on new-contract etiquette)

"Mike (Ashley), sensing it in him, wants to give it a real go. He got excited about what we did last year. We got very, very close to the Champions League and I think it has egged him on to really give it a go. " (An incredibly bullish Alan Pardew)

"Unless we make significant progress on this front by 10 August then we are likely to have no option other than to close the club." (Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch)

"I feel that training in the lower leagues will give me a reality check and maybe help me become a better person, a little more humility will serve me well." (Ah yes, that elusive humility - Joey Barton)

"Fair play to City. But if you gave us the last few games of the season and put us in that situation again, it wouldn't happen. It was just madness." (Rio Ferdinand doesn't like to think about it, but...)

"I'm just pleased I got a few in the middle. I'm just a slogger these days, they all seem to go even when I don't want them to." (Scott Styris after hitting 38 runs in an over during his 37-ball century)
