‘Never mind daddy, there’s always next season’

The four-year-old daughter of Dutch top flight footballer has melted hearts across the world with her heartbreaking attempts to console her dad after seeing his team get relegated.

De Graafschap skipper Rogier Meijer had broken down on the pitch after the final whistle blew in his club's Eredivsie relegation play-off against FC Den Bosch.

And you can understand why: Graafschap had just drawn the second leg of the tie 1-1 to see them sent down courtesy of the away goals rule.

At his darkest hour, however, his daughter Saar decided to help. Wearing a shirt bearing her dad's number 13 on her back, she trotted onto the pitch to see if she could cheer him up with a consoling hand on his shoulder and a kind word in his ear.

Sadly, it didn't work: the midfielder was so distraught that even little Saar's attempts to cheer him up were not enough, and he lay back down on the pitch with his head in his hands.
