A Moldovan top
flight player who punched a referee in the face was so ashamed with himself
that he immediately retired from the game.

Sfintul
Gheorge midfielder Julian Bursuc caught referee Ghenadie Sidenco square in the
face with a sickening right hook in the 55th minute of his side's Divizia
Nationala match away at Iskra-Stal.

Gheorge was
involved in an argument with the referee and one of the linesmen as his team
trailed 1-0 when the flare-up occurred.

The
hot-tempered player was quickly calmed down by his shocked team-mates, and taken
into custody by local police who were on the scene, as you can see in our video
below.

Veteran
midfielder Gheorge, 35, was so disgusted at how he lost his temper that he
decided to call time on his career.

Astonishingly,
the referee remained completely calm despite the assault, receiving a little
attention from one of the team physios and then getting on with the rest of the
match.

And he
quickly showed that his decision making had not been compromised in the least
by Gheorge's actions as he sent off opposition defender Andrei Porfireanu for a
second bookable offence just three minutes after the match restarted.

Home side Iskra-Stal
went on to win the match 3-0.
