The assumption is always the same: all professional footballers earn a shedload of money and live the 'Life of Riley'.

But the latest release of the 2013 player salaries in Major League Soccer in America suggest otherwise, with many former Premier League players earning a surprising small amount.

Take, for instance, former Premier League winner Carlo Cudicini who represented Tottenham and Chelsea during a long spell in England’s top flight.

The goalkeeper earns $150,000 a year playing for the LA Galaxy, which is significantly less than many top players earn in a week in the Premier League.

Equally, Robert Earnshaw picks up just $138,000 for Toronto FC, which is quite a climbdown from his days playing in England’s top flight for West Brom.

Of course, there are still players earning astronomical fees such as former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry, who picks up $3,750,000-a-year for representing the New York Red Bulls, while former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane is paid $4,000,000 to turn out for the LA Galaxy.

But for every Keane there is a high-performing forward such as Joao Plata, the Ecuadorean star who leads the line for Real Salt Lake – he only gets paid a paltry £60,000 a year.
