A New York
Yankees superstar is to spend his honeymoon in Afghanistan.

Outfielder
Nick Swisher and his new wife, actress Joanna Garcia, have eschewed the normal beach
paradise choices and will visit US troops in the war-torn country.

The pair got
married in December, but were forced to put their honeymoon on hold due to
their work schedules.

Now that
the end of the baseball season is in sight they have finally managed to plan their
first trip away together - and Afghanistan is their choice.

"I
come from a military family," the $9m-a-year Swisher explained to the New
York Post.

"No
matter what your views are, these men and women are out there risking
everything for us. I realise how fortunate I have been, so I like to give back
at every opportunity I can."

Garcia - a sitcom
star in the US - echoed her husband's thoughts on their unusual choice.

"We
are both really looking forward to visiting the troops," she told the
paper.

"Yes,
it isn't a traditional honeymoon, but it is something we both feel strongly
about."
