Yahoo Sports Coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games

By Ken Fuchs, Vice President of Yahoo Global Media and Head of Yahoo Sports

One of my earliest sports memories is sitting in my parents’ den watching the 1980 USA hockey team defy reality at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. As we set our sights on Sochi, Yahoo Sports is dedicated to bringing those new, yet unwritten moments to life for our readers and viewers around the world — and to celebrating the athletes who will inspire us … those who win gold and those who valiantly fall short.

Through videos and stories, we are looking back in time at a number of amazing memories of Winter Olympics past, and we are also exploring in a very unfiltered way this year’s Olympics in the backdrop of present-day Russia … from interviews with the soaring Eddie the Eagle, to a conversation with a member of Pussy Riot about their controversial imprisonment. And for the first time, we are collaborating with NBC to bring you all of the live broadcasts and highlights right here on Yahoo, every day of the Games.

Here are just a few ways you can get into the Games with Yahoo:

  • Check out the site. In many ways, it’s the sights and images from an Olympics that are most impactful, and we wanted to bring those to life with a new visual stream that makes staying up-to-date on the Olympics easy and fun to do. Check it out on your tablet, too, where the photography really comes to life.

  • Download the Yahoo Sports app on both iOS and Android to get real-time results, medal counts, and news and alerts on the go.

  • Get in the spirit with Yahoo Mail. Today, you can select the “Countdown to Sochi” theme for your inbox, and once the Olympics start, we’ll have a new theme and imagery every day that showcases an unforgettable highlight from the Games.

  • See the schedule of events at Yahoo Search, and track the medal counts. We’ll have the information you want to know about all the Olympic athletes, sports, and participating countries right on the search results page.

And, here are some of the great stories we can’t wait to share:

  • Behind the Sochi Curtain is a series created by Martin Rogers and Alan Springer. In this raw, unfiltered look at the Sochi Games, Martin and Alan traveled light — with just one camera, an iPhone and a backpack. The series focuses on the big issues facing Russia at large, especially as it steps into the world spotlight as the host of the Games … and unveils that everything isn’t always as it seems.

  • Memorable Moments takes you back to those great Olympic moments that had us glued to the TV to see who would experience the thrill of victory or the dreaded agony of defeat. The Yahoo Studios team takes you on a journey with some of your favorite Olympic athletes — like Eddie The Eagle and the Jamaican Bobsled team — who tell us about their most memorable moments from the Games.

  • Yahoo’s Elite Athlete Workouts gives you a peek into the mental and physical dedication it takes to become a world-class athlete. Viewers get inside access to the training regimens, diet and nutritional habits, motivations and personal stories of the world’s top athletes like Bode Miller.

  • Outside the Games will follow the paths of many Olympic hopefuls, from Paralympic medalist Taylor Lipsett to figure skating twins Alex and Maia Shibutani. In its second year, Outside the Games tells us the stories behind the stories … and gives us a deeper understanding of our US Winter Olympic athletes in Sochi.

Finally, we’re excited to team up with some of the best brands in the world and thank them for helping us bring you the best moments of the Winter Games.

  • Carnival Cruise Lines — sponsor of Memorable Moments;

  • Duracell & Vicks — sponsor of Yahoo’s Elite Athlete Workouts;

  • Bounty Select-A-Size — sponsor of Outside the Games;

  • and Liberty Mutual, Puffs, Crest, Subway, and AXA Financial.

We hope you enjoy the Games as much as we do, and we can’t wait to bring you more great coverage and stories at our Yahoo Sports Olympics Site.
