    • FT There goes the final whistle and Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid start their Champions League campaign with a win!
    • 89' Higuain squares a lovely ball across the face of goal and Ronaldo has an open net to pass into but completely misses the ball. What's up with him?!
    • 88' REAL MADRID SUB: Ozil, who has been excellent, makes way for Canales - another fine young talent signed from Racing Santander.
    • 86' Ajax look devoid of confidence but you can hardly blame them. They've barely seen the ball in this second half.
    • 85' Ronaldo goes solo but still no goal for the Portuguese. Great footwork to earn the space but no end product.
    • 84' REAL MADRID SUB: Diarra is brought on in place of Alonso as Mourinho looks to sure things up in midfield.
    • 82' Ronaldo cuts in from the left with a neat flick but, of course, has a go for goal instead of crossing and Stekelenburg is wise to it.
    • 80' REAL MADRID SUB: Di Maria is replaced by Leon.
    • 78' Sulejmani forces Casillas into a good save with a volley and follows it up with another effort but the Spanish stopper is quickly to his feet to punch clear.
    • 76' Higuain spins on the edge of the box after a lovely Ronaldo lay-off but his shot is just wide! Great effort.
    • 74' Ozil showed a cool head there to look up and find Higuain when it would have been easy to have another dig at goal.
    • 73' GOAL! Di Maria lifts a sublime ball over the top to Ozil. The German volleys goalwards but Stekelenburg saves. The ball falls back at Ozil's feet and the former Werder Bremen man squares for Higuain to tap home. 2-0. Game over.
    • 71' Raúl González (323 goals in 741 games) and Guti (77/542) departed the Santiago Bernabéu during the summer.
    • 70' Ajax have seen barely any of the ball over the last 10 minutes and that doesn't look like changing with a Real free-kick on the right flank after Di Maria was brought down by Anita.
    • 68' AJAX SUB: de Zeeuw is replaced by Tainio.
    • 67' Ronaldo really should be hitting the target from there. He had plenty of time to compose himself.
    • 66' Di Maria picks out Ronaldo on the edge of the box but the Portuguese can't find the target, instead putting his side-footed shot wide.
    • 64' Alderweireld has a dig from the free-kick but drags his shot wide of Casillas' left post.
    • 62' Ajax have a great opportunity to make their mark here after a man is brought down 25-yards out just left of centre...
    • 60' De Jong gets in a muddle in his own box to give away a corner. It's swung into the near post but fails to beat the first man.
    • 59' Enoh is on the receiving end this time, having been fouled by Arbeloa. Ajax free-kick in the middle of the park.
    • 58' Enoh goes through the back of Ozil and that's a foul.
    • 56' Ronaldo once again tries to score from outside the box. You can seeing what he was trying to do but it's going to take something special from there. Instead the ball is floated over the bar from 20-yards.
    • 55' Di Maria shrugs off a challenge on the right flank and cuts inside before hitting a curling shot at Stekelenburg. There were better options on there.
    • 54' Real look to be getting into their stride but Ronaldo, easily frustrated, is too eager to go alone, this time shooting over from distance.
    • 53' What a miss that was.
    • 52' Di Maria unleashes a superb left-footed shot which Stekelenburg can only push into the path of Higuain. The Argentinean controls it on his chest but inexplicably volleys over from six yards!
    • 51' Ronaldo breaks free on the left side of the box and fires goalwards only for Stekelenburg to get down well and parry away.
    • 51' Real Madrid have picked up the second half where the left the first, controlling possession.
    • 50' Carvalho's goal against Osasuna was his first league goal in almost two years, since registering in Chelsea FC's 3-1 win at Manchester City on 13 September 2008.
    • 47' Higuain drives forward down the left channel and beats one man before shooting - but a superb challenge sees the ball go out for a corner.
    • 46' Ajax get the second half under...
    • HT The referee blows up for half-time and Real are in control here... but they'll need a second to make it safe and settle the Bernabeau masses.
    • 46' Stekelenburg stretches to punch clear. Ajax break up the other end before, Real win back possession and go back to Casillas. Hold on, surely that's a back pass? The referee doesn't think so.
    • 45' Real will yet another corner, courtesy of Alderweireld block on Ozil's cross.
    • 44' Ronaldo cuts inside and has a shot from the left corner of the box but it's a limp effort straight at Stekelenburg. The Portuguese has to learn not to be so greedy from those positions.
    • 43' Suárez, absent for Ajax tonight through injury, has now scored 80 goals in 100 Eredivisie appearances for the Dutch side. How much will they miss their talisman over the 90 minutes?
    • 42' Real really are dominating. This time Ronaldo floats in a cross from the left, Higuain's attempted bicycle kicks is fruitless and Ozil's left-footed shot is over.
    • 41' Ajax's most recent visit to Spain brought a 3-2 defeat at RC Celta de Vigo in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage – there is not a single survivor of that team in Jol's current squad.
    • 40' Ozil's corner is headed clear.
    • 39' Ozil tries to pick out Ronaldo with a sublime 40-yard past but Ooijer glances the ball out for a corner.
    • 38' Second in the Dutch Eredivisie last term, Ajax earned their first group stage campaign since 2005/06 by beating PAOK FC and FC Dynamo Kyiv, drawing the away leg of both qualifying ties.
    • 37' Khedira goes for goal from distance but puts his shot high over the crossbar and into row z.
    • 36' No problems for Real there and the home side clear their lines. For the sixth year running Madrid were eliminated in the round of 16 last season. At home they posted two wins, one draw and one defeat.
    • 35' Ajax venture forward and El Hamdaoui forces a corner after his low cross is cleared.
    • 34' Jose Mourninho is furious that his side aren't 2-0 to the good.
    • 33' Marcelo ghosts past his man and has an age to shoot but squares to Higuain who misses the ball! It runs through to Di Maria at the back post but his curling effort is wide! Three chances in one for the hosts - and they couldn't convert any of them.
    • 32' The box was incredibly crowded there and I'm not sure how much Higuain knew about there. But they all count and Jose is off the mark in the 2010/11 Champions League.
    • 31' GOAL! Alonso swings in a Real corner to the near post from the left and Higuain glances the ball into the back of the net! 1-0 to the hosts.
    • 30' Real half-clear the free-kick and de Zeeuw jumps on the loose ball but shoots over the bar.
    • 29' Alonso is booked for a two-footed challenge on Sulejmani. There was no intent but the former Liverpool man will be walking a tight-rope now.
    • 28' Di Maria tricks his way into the box after a series of quick Real passes around the edge of the area. The Argentinean shows too much of the ball to Stekelenburg and goes down under the 'keeper's challenge but the referee is having none of it and points for a corner. Good decision.
    • 27' De Jong heads the corner clear as Ajax clear their lines.
    • 26' Ronaldo receives the ball wide left and cuts inside before seeing his curling shot superbly blocked by van der Wiel. Corner.
    • 25' Di Maria steams into the box after a great one-two with Ozil but the resulting side-footed shot is, you guessed it, saved by Stekelenburg. You're going to have to find the corners to beat this Ajax 'keeper...
    • 24' Di Maria drives forward, running at defenders, but his shot is straight at Stekelenburg. Real are peppering the Ajax goal but with little potentcy.
    • 23' Ronaldo dances his way into the box, slipping between two Ajax defenders, but his touch is heavy and allows Stekelenburg to rush off his line to gather.
    • 22' Marcelo produces a neat turn on the edge of the box but his pass (or shot? It was neither) just dribbles through to Stekelenburg.
    • 21' A slightly short backpass has Stekelenburg on his toes but the Ajax stopper is there first to hoof clear.

    • 19' Stekelenburg really was rooted to the spot there. A bystander.

    • 12' Ozil was one of six summer arrivals in Madrid, along with Ángel Di María, Pedro León, Sami Khedira, Ricardo Carvalho and Sergio Canales.
    • 11' Ozil, looking lively already, skips away from his man down the right channel and fires a ball across goal which Stekelenburg smothers.
    • 10' De Zeeuw is booked for a late challenge on Marcelo just inside the Ajax half.
    • 9' What should we expect from Real Madrid in the Champions League? Fast, flowing football that their fans demand? Unlikely under Mourinho.
    • 8' Real Madrid have dominated possession from the first whistle but Ajax are now slowly getting a grip on the game, stringing a handful of passes around the back while looking for a forward opening.
    • 7' Khedira, seeking his first Real Madrid goal, has a go from 25-yards but shoots straight at Stekelenburg.
    • 6' Ozil bursts through the middle, attempting to latch onto a long through-ball, but Ooijer gets there first to clear.
