    • - An enjoyable match, with a great outcome for Manchester City. They next play in the Champions League a fortnight from now, taking on Villarreal again, this time in Spain. Hope you'll join us for that one. In the meantime you can follow me on Twitter here
    • 90+5' FULL TIME! City just about deserved it, but they left it mighty late. Aguero was fairly quiet after his introduction, but he's scored a crucial goal which may yet kick-start their European campaign!
    • 90+4' Milner picks out Zabaleta with a crafty ball, zippy low cross from Zabaleta - so many City bodies in the box, and it's Aguero who pokes in from close range. Mancini goes bonkers!
    • 90+3' GOAL! AGUERO HAS DONE IT!
    • 90+2' Gaspar cautioned for timewasting. Second Villarreal player to be penalised for it.
    • 90+1' HALF A CHANCE FOR CITY! The ball bobbles at Silva's feet in the six-yard box! If only he could have controlled it! And moments later Zabaleta forces Lopez into a diving save with a header!
    • 90' Lescott shows composure to stop Valero on the break without sliding in. Three mintues of stoppages to play.
    • 89' From not very much, Gareth Barry wins a corner. Lescott comes forward, Kolarov whips it in, but Villarreal head it clear, and Rossi blocks Barry from getting in the rebound.
    • 88' Villarreal change - De Guzman off after a committed effort, replaced by Guillon.
    • 87' Villarreal sitting very deep now - it looks as if it will be City on the attack from now to the final whistle. How many minutes will we see of stoppages?
    • 86' DZEKO! Mancini despairs. Kolarov puts in a great cross, picks out Dzeko completley unmarked, and his free header sails wide. A big chance wasted, at least to test the keeper.
    • 85' Zapata and Kolarov tussle, and the Serbian wins a throw near the corner flag.
    • 84' Kolarov picks out Aguero with a long ball down the left, but in trying to beat Rodriguez the Argentine's touch really lets him down.
    • 83' Mubaraak wins a corner here - Villarreal look to have set their stall up to defend their draw. Valero being pelted by papers here - a staggeringly stupid move from those fans throwing them.
    • 82' Defensive change for Villarreal - goalscorer Cani off, Gaspar, a defender, on.
    • 81' Poor tackle from Kompany on Mubarak, though the City captain suggests he dived. Not this time. Free-kick for the visitors.
    • 80' City meanwhile replace Nasri with Milner. Last roll of the dice for Mancini?
    • 79' Villarreal switch Mubarak for Perez.
    • 78' Time running out for City - Roberto Mancini made it clear before the game how important victory was. He has one change still available to him.
    • 77' DZEKO CLOSE! But that move was all about Aguero, who bursts through the middle and plays the ball inside to Dzeko - his shot though just wide of the near stick. Aguero also had the option of Kolarov to his left, but went for his striker.
    • 76' Hart fists a ball out of the penalty area and the ball falls to De Guzman - he doesn't make the connection he would have hoped for with his shot, and it dribbles wide to Hart's right.
    • 75' Dzeko penalised for handball there - it's just not happened for him this evening - he's had his chances, and he's made some mistakes as well.
    • 74' KOLAROV CLOSE AGAIN! Great hit, but a foot wide of the near post. Diego Lopez had it covered.
    • 73' Valero fells Silva as the man in blue tries to get a little room. Kolarov may try his luck from this range, though it's all of 30m out.
    • 72' Zapata has a little room on the right hand side but is too slow to get his cross in. Villarreal work the ball left though in style, only for Catala to end the move with a speculative shot.
    • 71' Possession 52-48 in City's favour in the second half - illustrating how much more Villarreal have shown since the restart.
    • 70' Perez plays a cross which teases Cani, who shapes to volley from 20 yards - City clear before he can.
    • 69' Toure has indeed settled back into a defensive midfield partnership with Barry - and those two are stroking the ball around, looking for a way to get some space.
    • 68' Hart has a few choice words for Rossi, getting very close to the Italian. Plenty of life in this contest as we go into the final quarter of the match.
    • 67' Yellow card for Rossi - he's been caught out by the referee diving. This Czech referee has shown little tolerance for players going down softly - a good thing.
    • 66' De Guzman works into a little space before finding Perez. He works it back into the middle where De Guzman and Valero combine... the move ends with an offside but once again it's a little warning of the Spanish threat.
    • 65' Nasri picks out Kolarov, who whips in a useful left-footed cross, but Catala shows great composure to chest it back to his goalkeeper.
    • 64' Zabaleta the latest to win possession and send Dzeko off in attack - the pressure is building once again at the Etihad Stadium.
    • 63' Koalrov cuts out Zapata's run and gets City back on the move.
    • 62' Looks like an attacking move - Aguero on for De Jong. Does that mean Toure drops back deep again? Probably.
    • 61' Dzeko muscled off the ball again here in a decent position, and that allows Villarreal to break. Zapata cracks a low shot from just outside the area, but Hart gets down to smother it.
    • 60' Looks like City are bringing out their danger man - perhaps they wanted to rest him for the Manchester derby at the weekend, but Aguero is getting ready to come on. Perez has gone down injured for Villarreal and is receiving some treatement.
    • 59' Toure picks out Dzeko in the box, but the Bosnian cannot control the ball with his back to goal, and the move fizzles out.
    • 58' Valero takes the corner and plays it well outside the box to De Guzman, but it's a real waste.
    • 57' Kompany has to clear for a corner with Cani bearing down on him to get to Perez's cross.
    • 56' Kolarov again caught offside - the full-back has been playing like a winger for much of this match.
    • 55' Valero now tries a shot from distance having been set up by Cani's run and pass. Well over, but the game has really opened up since the restart.
    • 54' Toure skips through a couple of challenges and picks out Kolarov - who nets - but the Serbian is offside.
    • 53' City have a bit of defending to do at the moment - and Villarreal have shown they can be a threat when in possession.
    • 52' Just a bit more imagination being shown from the visitors here - they are taking a few steps further forward. De Guzman has a corner to take.
    • 51' Another warning shot from Rossi - same tight angle, same squeezed shot - this time low, and at the far post. Hart parries, and he can consider himself lucky no man in yellow was following it up.
    • 50' Toure certainly much further up the field now. Barry in the defensive role, Toure marauding.
    • 49' A valiant run from Rossi - completely alone up front, he gets on the end of a Cani through ball and beats Lescott to get a shot away from an angle. Into the side netting, however, and City safe enough.
    • 48' DZEKO CLOSE TO GIVING CITY THE LEAD! Villarreal step up to play offside, but Dzeko's got it right - the shot is saved superbly by Lopez, who's done very well tonight.
    • 47' Plenty of those blue and white cards from earlier in the evening now being thrown down towards the stewards - it won't do much damage, but City PA asks fans to stop doing it.
    • 46' The second half begins!
    • - Napoli have also found an equaliser in the other group game - 1-1 in both games in Group A. Follow that one here
    • - City very much the better side, but lost a sloppy early goal and only got back on terms at the end of the half. Plenty to play for in the second half for both sides. I'll be back shortly - but if you want to debate who was at fault for the first goal, who whether Adam Johnson should have been subbed 40 minutes into the match, why not join me on Twitter?
    • 45+1' HALF TIME: Villarreal in possession, in the City half, but going nowhere fast. The referee blows the whistle on an intriguing first half.
    • 45' One minute of stoppages to be played.
    • 45' DZEKO! Golden chance after he judges his run perfectly to meet Silva's through ball. Diego Lopez spreads himself superbly to block the Bosnian's shot. City finishing strongly.
    • 44' De Guzman tries a shot from range! High in the end, but plenty of power behind it!
    • 43' GOAL! CITY ARE LEVEL! It comes from an own goal as Kolarov's cross gives Marchena a headache - he has to block the ball from Dzeko - but at that angle there's nowhere for the ball to go but in the net!
    • 41' Kompany had to be very strong there to beat Rossi to a long ball forward - and he was. Classy defending, and he wins a free-kick to boot.
    • 40' Early change from Manchester City - and it's a strange one. Johnson is coming off for Gareth Barry. Johnson shrugs his shoulders at that one - he looks baffled.
    • 39' Dzeko goes down in the box after a challenge from Marchena - but no, he's got the ball cleanly.
    • 38' Toure shanks a shot from the left well wide of the far post, but City just look as if they're winding up again.
    • 37' Marchena gives the ball away to Johnson in a dangerous area - Rodriguez goes in full-bloodedly but fairly (says the referee) on Silva to win the ball back just in time.
    • 36' Good move from City - Nasri and Silva at the heart of it, swapping passes more than once before Nasri whips a ball across the middle from the left wing - Dzeko not quite there to meet it, and it runs out on the far side for a throw.
    • 35' Valero tries to tease a ball through towards Rossi as the visitors counter, but City come away with the ball.
    • 34' Rossi being left to chase lost causes for Villarreal - he pokes the ball past Lescott, but Kompany is behind him to avert any danger.
    • 33' Yellow card for Catala. For timewasting, would you believe. There's an hour of this contest left!
    • 32' City have just lost some of their momentum in the last few minutes. After creating several chances earlier on, they've not threatened the goal since.
    • 31' De Jong gets himself into a bit of a mess, surrounded by three yellow shirts. He only gets out of it when Rossi clips his heels.
    • 30' Johnson double-teamed on the right - a reflection of how dangerous the midfielder has looked when dribbling.
    • 29' Dzeko goes down theatrically after a challenge with Rodriguez, and the referee waves play on.
    • 28' Catala's run down the wing is thwarted by Toure, who looks to take a quick throw.
    • 27' Cani comes back down the right, holds on to the ball for what seems like an eternity before picking out Rossi, who doesn't have room for a shot. Villarreal do look dangerous when they're attacking.
    • 26' Zapata makes a break down the right for the visitors, but Kolarov closes that one out.
    • 25' Silva picks out Zabaleta, but the Argentine's cross is low and Catala clears before it's any threat.
    • 24' Nasri flagged for offside, the fourth time a City player has been caught out - mind you, the centre-half was playing the Frenchman onside by a good couple of feet in this case - wrong call from the assistant referee.
    • 23' Silva tries a shot from range - scuffs it, and that very nearly breaks for Johnson, who continued his run. Diego Lopez just beats him to it.
    • 23' 65% possession for Manchester City - after that early shock they've looked in good shape.
    • 22' Rossi just looking a little sore here - the Villarreal striker is stretching out his hamstring, and looking in a touch of discomfort.
    • 21' De Jong whistles an attempt over the bar from just outside the box as the hosts pile on the pressure from the resulting corner.
    • 20' KOLAROV CLOSE! Cheeky from the full-back - he shapes to deliver a cross from a set piece, but then tries to catch out the keeper. Diego Lopez alert to deal with a decent attempt!
    • 19' If it was 0-0 you'd have said that City had made an excellent start to this game - but as it stands there's a lot for the men in blue to do.
    • 18' Good industry from Toure and Kolarov - between the two of them they force a corner for the home side.
    • 17' Nice shape to that Silva delivery, but it ends up going straight into the arms of Diego Lopez, who throws the ball out to Perez on the right-hand side.
    • 16' Johnson looks to dance around the outside of Catala, and the Villarreal man brings him down. Set piece from a very promising position on the right.
    • 15' CITY CLOSE AGAIN! Dzeko's control excellent as he jinks to the byline, and his cutback could have found Silva who'd have been left with a tap-in. Not quite - but City are reasserting themselves.
    • 14' There was a light rain before this match - it's now very heavy in Manchester.
    • 13' HALF A CHANCE! NASRI OVER THE TOP! Lovely move from City, their best moment of the match - it starts with Yaya Toure picking out a ball to the marauding Kolarov, whose cross finds the Frenchman, but it arrives at an awkward height and he strikes it over.
    • 12' Wonderful flick from Johnson to release Zabaleta - it comes to nothing but rebounds to Kolarov whose shot from 35 yards zips teasingly past the far post.
    • 12' Villarreal have scored their first Champions League goal (excl. qualifers) in England, after 364 minutes of play (Opta).
    • 11' Kompany has to make a firm header to avert the danger from Perez's cross from the byline.
    • 10' Nasri opts for an early cross from some distance on the left - way off the mark. Villarreal back on the ball. Valero drives the visitors forward.
    • 9' Cani certainly in the thick of things at the moment - he's won a free-kick as Zabaleta clips him in the middle of the half. Valero stands over it.
    • 8' Catala takes an attacking throw for Villarreal down on the left flank. Cani tries to thread a pass through but Yaya Toure clears up.
    • 7' News of a goal in Group A's other game - Bayern Munich are ahead in Napoli through Toni Kroos.
    • 6' City trying to get back moving - Zabaleta and Dzeko combine, only for the Bosnian to be ruled offside.
    • 5' City really sloppy there - and the crowd has been stunned by that one. Some regrouping to do for Roberto Mancini's men.
    • 4' GOAL FOR VILLARREAL! CANI HAS SCORED! De Jong has his pocket picked, Rossi gets a shot away which Hart can only parry, and Cani tucks the rebound underneath the keeper!
    • 3' First signs of life from the visitors, who try to work some space through the middle courtesy of a determined run from De Guzman.
    • 2' City in possession in the early stages, happy to stroke the ball across the back line.
    • 1' Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium! City get us underway.
    • 19:45 Both sides in their first kits - City in sky blue, Villarreal showing why they are nicknamed 'The Yellow Submarine'.
    • 19:44 Garrido looking very fidgety in the dugout. His Villarreal side have a big task ahead of them.
    • 19:43 Plenty of City players with experience of Spanish football and playing Villarreal - they could be crucial tonight.
    • 19:42 The Champions League music plays - City fans must pinch themselves every once in a while, remembering life in the third tier...
    • 19:41 The players are out on the pitch. The fans are holding white and blue cards above their heads. The Etihad Stadium looks superb.

    • 19:30 Villarreal risk breaking some unwanted records tonight. They've never lost three straight games in Europe, and they've never failed to qualify tonight. If the first record goes, it will be an almighty battle to prevent the second falling with it.
    • 19:25 Manchester City have won only one of their five European games against Spanish opponents, drawing two and losing the last two matches (Opta). But they go into this match clear favourites - bookmakers have City as 1/3 to win, while Villarreal are a distant 10/1, and the draw is 9/2.
    • 19:20 For those of you who like to keep up to speed with these sorts of things, tonight's refereeing team is all-Czech, and headed by Pavel Kralovec. He's an engineer from Damzlice, and made his debut in the Champions League group stage on matchday two.
    • 19:15 Former Valencia player David Silva: "They like to keep possession, they've got very fast players up front and are very dangerous on the counter. We'll have to try to keep the ball as much as we can to avoid being caught on the break."
    • 19:10 Villarreal are not having a great time of things in La Liga this season. They've won just one game in the league from seven, and sit 14th in the table. Check out the form of City's opponents here
    • 19:05 JUAN CARLOS GARRIDO: "Sometimes when you come to difficult opponent like Manchester City ... it brings out the best football in you. What's really important for us is to show a much better face of Villarreal than we've showed so far this season."
    • 19:05 ROBERTO MANCINI: "It is not important if we play well or not well, it is important we win this game. If we win I think we can also win the group - it's possible, we have a chance. Villarreal are a good team, they are used to playing in the Champions League for many years."
    • 19:00 So that's five changes for Manchester City from the side that thumped Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League at the weekend. Perhaps the most eye-catching news is that Aguero starts on the bench, with City set to line up in a 4-2-3-1 with Dzeko on his own up front. Villarreal also look likely to set up 4-2-3-1, headed by former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi.
    • 18:55 MANCHESTER CITY: Hart, Kompany, Zabaleta, Lescott, Kolarov, Adam Johnson, Nasri, De Jong, Toure, Dzeko, Silva - subs - Pantilimon, Richards, Milner, Savic, Aguero, Barry, Clichy /// VILLARREAL: Lopez, Rodriguez, Marchena, Catala, Zapata, Soriano, Valero, Cani, De Guzman, Perez, Rossi - subs - Sanchez, Musacchio, Gaspar, Mubarak, Bordas, Gullon, Joselu
    • 18:50 City shared the points with Napoli on their Champions League debut, but were outplayed against the experienced Bayern Munich, a night made infamous by Carlos Tevez's apparent refusal to come on as a substitute. But Villarreal have had things even worse. They were beaten 2-0 at home by the Germans, and then lost by the same margin on the road at Napoli. Full Group A standings and results here
