    • - Thanks for joining us. We'll see you next time.
    • - So United get their Champions League campaign off to a winning start at Old Trafford, even if the performance was a little underwhelming. If Galatasaray play like that against Braga though, they'll have no trouble qualifying for the knock-out stages.
    • 90+5' FULL-TIME: Manchester United 1-0 Galatasaray
    • 90+4' United break with Carrick. He plays in Hernandez, who tries a bicycle kick towards goal. It's off-target. That's three decent attempts he's had in less than 10 minutes.
    • 90+2' Evans brings down Aydin Yilmaz in the United box. Somehow the penalty shouts are waved away again. What does anyone have to do tonight to get one?
    • 90+1' Nani plays a low through-ball to Hernandez, whose shot is expertly blocked by Muslera. Fair play to Nounkeu too; he got himself in there again to put off the striker.
    • 90' Five minutes of added time to be played.
    • 89' Eboue is off the pitch for treatment. Galatasaray have, remember, used up all their subs... He's back on the pitch.
    • 88' Eboue is on the ground again. Welbeck and the Ivorian both went for the same ball, the pair catching each others' knees. No malice in that from the England striker. Not that Eboue will be bothered by that.
    • 86' Valencia is looking for a penalty, the winger having been brought down by Nounkeu. The contact was definitely there, but again the officials wave away the pleas.
    • 85' Nani feeds Hernandez in the box, but the Mexican wastes a glorious chance to put the result beyond doubt and fires wide.
    • 84' MAN UTD SUB: Welbeck replaces Kagawa.
    • 83' Looks like the forward line will be changing wholesale for the home side. Danny Welbeck is getting ready to come on.
    • 82' MAN UTD SUB: Javier Hernandez replaces van Persie.
    • 81' Van Persie is booked for a foul on Elmander.
    • 80' So Fletcher, who many thought may never play football again, is back on the pitch. The Old Trafford faithful are cheering every time he touches the ball.
    • 79' GALATASARAY SUB: Aydin Yilmaz replaces Melo.
    • 78' MAN UTD SUB: Darren Fletcher replaces Scholes.
    • 77' Valencia produces yet another lacklustre cross. It's a shame, as he's not been lacking in the engine room tonight.
    • 75' Kagawa's covered nearly 10km tonight. Superhuman.
    • 74' Rafael has some space on the right, and some good work from himself and Valencia sets up Kagawa for an effort. His shot is blocked by the excellent Nounkeu.
    • 73' Darren Fletcher is getting stripped off and looks like he's going to make his first appearance in a United shirt for a year.
    • 72' Kagawa takes his marker out of play with a superb touch and plays in Nani, whose ball into the box is lacking in accuracy and puts van Persie off balance as it finds him.
    • 70' Evra is brought down in a United attack. His team-mates appeal for the free-kick, and while they stop and stare, Galatasaray break dangerously with Altintop... He feeds Yilmaz, who has a strong drive parried by de Gea. Colak picks up the loose ball and blasts it towards goal, drawing a save of the very highest order out of the Spanish goalkeeper.
    • 69' With finishing like that, it's no surprise he doesn't score many.
    • 68' Evra begins an attack on the halfway line with a through-ball to Nani. Nani and Kagawa exchange passes and feed the advancing Evra, who puts his directed shot just past the post.
    • 67' Semih Kaya rescues Selcuk Inan’s misplaced pass. Van Persie could have been in on goal there...
    • 65' Galatasaray fans will remember well the great comeback of their side here in 1993, which resulted in a 3-3 draw that put United out of that year's Champions League on away goals (the opening leg ending 0-0 in Istanbul).
    • 64' Nani is penalised for a push on Eboue. He's starting to get a little frustrated now.
    • 63' That's a bit of a surprise; Amrabat and Altintop had been pretty effective - especially in the first half.
    • 62' GALATASARAY SUB: Emre Colak replaces Amrabat.
    • 61' Nani trips Eboue and the Ivorian goes down like he's been shot. The resultant free-kick from the right side comes to nothing as de Gea claims the ball.
    • 60' Vidic is booked for a foul on Yilmaz. The Turk made the most of that, Vidic having made slight contact with his wrist, after being first to the ball.
    • 59' Vidic's header towards goal skims the top of the net, Nani having set him up with the corner. The big Serb is adamant that Muslera got a touch, but no corner is given.
    • 58' United break with Valencia, who crosses into the middle of the box for van Persie. Nounkeu clears the ball, which is eventually put out for a corner.
    • 57' Melo is booked for a foul on Rafael.
    • 55' Altintop creates some space on the right. He crosses to the near post for Selcuk, whose cross-goal header is so close to levelling things up. De Gea was beaten!
    • 53' Classic. United have a corner, but the balls all seem to have disappeared.
    • 52' MUSLERA SAVES NANI'S PENALTY! It was an awful strike by the Portuguese, who took about a hundred pauses during his run-up.
    • 51' PENALTY TO UNITED! Rafael is brought down in the box by Yilmaz.
    • 50' Nani skips around Balta's challenge, but his cross comes to nothing.
    • 49' Nine attempts on goal from Galatasaray in the game so far, compared to only five for United. It's the home side with the lead though.
    • 48' It's the first half all over again. Galatasaray break and Altintop drags a low shot past the far post. He'd exchanged passes with Amrabat, who has started this half as impressively as he ended the first one.
    • 47' Kagawa plays a beautiful one-two with Nani and tries to dink a shot past Muslera from close range. The goalkeeper produces a fine save. Corner to United.
    • 46' The home side have the advantage, but must not get complacent. Their opponents showed enough in the first half to suggest a serious threat.
    • 46' Galatasaray get the second half underway.
    • 20:47 We're ready for the second half.
    • 20:34 Join us again for the second half, due to begin at 20:45.
    • 20:33 So Carrick's first goal for eight months makes all the difference at the break, but Galatasaray might feel a little aggrieved not to be level.
    • 45+2' HALF-TIME: Manchester United 1-0 Galatasaray
    • 45+1' Scholes, Carrick and Kagawa combine well again, but Kagawa's shot is very week. He virtually passed it to Muslera from inside the box.
    • 44' Carrick was very lucky there. He didn't get any of the ball and could have given away a free-kick in a very dangerous position.
    • 43' Scholes gives the ball away to Altintop. The Turk steadies himself for the shot, but Carrick gets a tackle in to disrupt the effort.
    • 42' The corner is headed away at the near post and Amrabat's resultant shot on goal is weak and easy for de Gea.
    • 41' There's nothing confident about Evans' header away from Amrabat's cross. He and Vidic are not communicating well tonight, and de Gea looks like it’s frustrating him. Corner to the visitors.
    • 40' Scholes and Kagawa combine again near the edge of the Galatasaray box, but Muslera collects the ball confidently this time.
    • 38' Altintop’s powerful shot from the edge of the box clips the edge of the post. His was the hit from the cleverly-taken free-kick.
    • 37' Evra is booked for a tackle on Amrabat. That gives Galatasary a free-kick just a yard outside the box on the right-hand side.
    • 36' Another goal in the other Group H game between Braga and Cluj. Find out who's scored it.
    • 35' Yilmaz wins a free-kick from the unfortunate Valencia. He managed to lean into the Ecuador winger there and gain the decision.
    • 34' Galatasaray have the ball on the fringes of the United area with Yilmaz dictating the play. United are holding firm though and force a cross, which Elmander can’t get anywhere near.
    • 33' United break as the corner comes to nothing. The ball comes to Kagawa in the area, the Japanese dynamo dancing around the defence despite legs coming at him from all angles. Eventually Nounkeu gets a foot in to deny him a shot.
    • 31' Melo’s challenge allows his side to break. The ball is fed to the advancing Eboue, who surges into the area and unleashes a fierce shot. De Gea pushes it wide and concedes the corner.
    • 30' Melo does brilliantly to shove Nani off the ball and give his team-mates a chance to track back. United could gave had a very good chance there.
    • 28' Carrick, Scholes and Valencia combine brilliantly in attack, leaving Dany Nounkeu to clear desperately and concede the corner.
    • 26' The corner is cleared... badly, but the sting is taken out of Altintop's shot by Evans.
    • 25' United are perhaps trying to be a little too clever with the ball. They're giving it away a little too much for the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson. Galatasary have a free-kick which both Vidic and Evans attempt to block. They collide and the visitors have a corner.
    • 24' Ooh. Replays show that Eboue handled the ball that Muslera failed to confidently deal with. I guess we'll call that 1-1 in penalties not awarded.
    • 23' Muslera flaps at Valencia’s cross, but just manages to prevent van Persie making contact with the ball. United still have possession as Valencia picks it up again wide on the right. Valencia’s cross is perfect into space, but there’s nobody on the end of it.
    • 21' But there are definitely goals in the Turkish side. They have their first corner, which Selcuk takes. Melo misses the target with his header, but falls to the ground. Carrick came in for the same ball and the two clashed heads.
    • 20' Man Utd are dominating posession: 57 per cent to Galatasaray's 43.
    • 19' There's been a goal in the other Group H game between Braga and Cluj. Find out who it's gone to.
    • 18' Kagawa goes close, trying to back-heel Scholes’ shot beyond Muslera. That all came about from Galatasaray’s failure to effectively clear Nani’s corner.
    • 17' Carrick ‘s goal looks to have given him a tonne of confidence. His beautifully-weighted through ball to Valencia results in a corner, thanks to the latter’s cross being blocked.
    • 16' And it's a return to Old Trafford for Swedish striker Elmander. He played here twice for Bolton in the Premier League, but failed to find the back of the net.
    • 14' GALATASARAY SUB: Johan Elmander replaces Bulut
    • 13' Bulut looks to be hobbling. Galatasaray fans will be praying that their club's top goalscorer isn't force off through injury so early in the game.
    • 12' What vision Paul Scholes has. An amazing crossfield ball finds Antonio Valencia, but his cross comes to nothing.
    • 11' Amrabat has some running in him and seems to be Galatasaray's answer to Franck Ribery. That was a close one, and now he's at it again, exchanging useful pass with Yilmaz. Fortunatley Rafael is on-hand to get rid of the danger for United.
    • 11' Amrabat hits the bar! And Galatasaray almost had an equaliser there. All because Scholes had done the unthinkable and misplaced a pass.
    • 10' The move comes to nothing and Paul Scholes even gives it away.
    • 9' United have a free-kick 35 yards from goal. Van Persie was brought down by Melo.
    • 8' That's Carrick's first goal of the season and his first in the Champions League for three years.
    • 7' GOAL! MICHAEL CARRICK PUTS MAN UTD AHEAD! Van Persie plays the ball into Carrick outside the box, and he exchanges passes with Kagawa to bypass the entire back line. He tumbles to the ground under a challenge from Muslera, but refocuses to prod the ball past the Uruguayan.
    • 5' Lovely little one-two between Nani and Kagawa on the left; the Portuguese winger being left with a great chance to put the home side in front, but Fernando Muslera makes an excellent save. Nani only had to dink it over him.
    • 4' Galatasaray on the break. Yilmat feeds Amrabat, but he's caught offside. Pointless, really. He didn't need to accelerate quite so quickly.
    • 2' Bulut is brought down 40 yards from goal and Galatasaray take a quick free-kick... But Nani intercepts for the home side and Man Utd break. Nope. Too quick and the move breaks down.
    • 1' Burak Yilmaz drives forward for Galatasaray, the ball being worked into the box. Bulut tumbles in the area, but referee Wolfgang Stark says Nemanja Vidic's tackle is a fair one. Hmmm.
    • 1' We're off with Man Utd getting the game underway.
    • 19:45 Man Utd look like they'll line-up 4-4-1-1 with Kagawa playing just off van Persie. Galatasaray, meanwhile, seem to have a regular 4-4-2 formation with Umut Bulut, who has scored seven goals in five games this season since arriving on loan from Toulouse, the main goal threat.
    • 19:40 Just five minutes to kick-off then at Old Trafford. Patrice Evra among the returning players tonight and waiting in the tunnel. He replaces Alexander Buttner.
    • 19:35 Chelsea, incidentally, are in action against Juventus tonight in their opening Champions League game of the season. You can follow live coverage of that game here.
    • 19:30 Man Utd stack up similarly. Ten goals in three games since their defeat to Everton on the opening weekend of the Premier League season have brought the side to second in the table, behind Chelsea.
    • 19:25 Fatih Terim, who scored for Galatasaray when the team first played in England against West Brom in 1978, returned to the side last year for a third spell as manager, and led the team to their first Turkish league title in four seasons. They top the table this season too, with 12 goals in their opening four games, three wins and a draw.
    • 19:20 Galatasaray have a particularly poor record against English sides, to be honest. They have never won in England and have taken only two victories in 15 games against teams from the country. That doesn't include Galatasaray's finest hour; defeating Arsenal on penalties to win the Uefa Cup in 2000. That match finished 0-0 after extra time.
    • 19:15 Something for the stattos among you here. This is the fifth meeting between these sides, and they tend to finish all-square. In fact, only one of the previous four ties has had a winner; that being Man Utd in December 1994. David Beckham netted for the first time in a Utd shirt that night in what was a 4-0 demolition of the Turkish side.
    • 19:10 Remember, you can see what's happening in the other Group H match between Braga and Cluj. Follow it right here.
    • 19:05 Some familiar names in the Galatasaray matchday squad. Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue starts at right-back with Hamit Altintop and Felipe Melo - previously of Bayern Munich and Juventus respectively - in midfield. Ex-Bolton striker Johan Elmander picked up a knock at the weekend, and is only fit enough to make the bench,
    • 19:00 So Sir Alex Ferguson does indeed welcome back van Persie - who was on the bench against Wigan last weekend - and Kagawa, who didn't feature at all. Just as significant is the inclusion of Darren Fletcher, who makes the bench after a year out with health problems.
    • 18:55 TEAMS.... MAN UTD: De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, Kagawa, van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Anderson, Cleverley, Fletcher, Hernandez, Welbeck. /// GALATASARAY: Muslera, Nounkeu, Hakan Balta, Semih Kaya, Eboue, Altintop, Selcuk Inan, Melo, Amrabat, Burak Yilmaz, Umult Bulut. Subs: Ufuk Ceylan, Cris, Aydin Yilmaz, Riera, Engin Baytar, Emre Colak, Elmander.
    • 18:50 News of the sides is filtering through now and it seems that David de Gea has been recalled in goal for Man Utd with Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie also being restored to the starting line-up.
    • 18:45 Good evening and welcome to LIVE coverage of Manchester United v Galatasaray in both sides' opening game of the 2012/13 Uefa Champions League. Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 19:45 UK time.
  • Summary

    • 90+1' Nani plays a low through-ball to Hernandez, whose shot is expertly blocked by Muslera. Fair play to Nounkeu too; he got himself in there again to put off the striker.

  12. Funny how the conclusion says " If Galatasaray play like that against Braga though, they'll have no trouble qualifying for the knock-out stages." although Braga lost 2-0 at home to CFR Cluj, which are now the team to beat to get second place, and not Braga.

  14. when is Sir Alex going to learn from the past? Not only he brings in David de Gea, Patrice Evra, who all must be playing the reserve role, he did not have any vision for this game. If Nani thinks that penalties are goals, he has not learnt his lesson either. Is it not shameful of a team contending for the title loosing THREE penalties successively? In the absence of Rooney, a 90% penalty shooter, MANU of all lacks a penalty shooter. Thank God the officials were blind to all fouls that could earn their opponents a penalty today. The young inspiring squad that beat their opponents over the weekend should be relied opon Mr. Alx if you want results.

  17. Oh dear, Oh dear, just where do they get these officials? Talk about inept at OT, the two penalties that Galatasaray feel they should have got, were NEVER penalties, the defenders had the ball (if not under control) & were clearing them when the forward nipped in, no way could a defender stop his foot kicking away the ball. Then, look at the Goal United scored: Carrick was through on goal, he WAS fouled in the act of scoring, the fact he managed to squeeze the ball into the net, is NOT a reason for taking action against the keeper, had it been a foul on another player, but advantage being played, the referee would have gone back to the offending player & cautioned him! A RED CARD offence, IS a RED card offence no matter what happens in the advantage. Third, NAni's penalty decision: he nut-megged the defender, who blocked his progress onto the ball = PENALTY every day of the week. Finally, Valencia's penalty: fine, the referee WAS unsighted, but, just what was/ is the fourth/ fifth official doing/ looking? I have YET to see a 4th/ 5th official make a decision, yet at OT tonight, he was NOT even looking at Valencia/ the ball. Again, the defender clipped Valencia, PENALTY every day of the week. United may be did not play well, but had they got a second goal, the Turks would no doubt have folded.
