  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Valencia CF
    • Lille OSC
    • 90+3' Finally the Italian referee signals the end of the night and Lille are relieved to hear that final whistle. A solid performance from Valencia who can kick-start their season with this result.
    • 90+1' Lille can't get hold of the ball in these final minutes and the home fans are shouting Olé every time Valencia touch the ball.
    • 89' Valencia are attacking as the seconds tick away, Costa blasting wide from outside the box as the French defenders wait for the final whistle to blow.
    • 88' It wasn't a great atmosphere at the Mestalla this evening by any means as the home fans didn't turn up in numbers. Indeed it's still the away fans who have made the trip south who are doing the only audible singing. A good effort by them, shame the same can't be said of their team.
    • 87' There seems to be no fight left from Lille who appear to be slipping to their second defeat in two Champions League group games. Valencia are stroking the ball around lazily and don't look bothered about searching for a third goal.
    • 85' Things go from bad to worse for the French side as their captain Debuchy gets his marching order for a second yellow card. Goodnight.
    • 83' Now Valencia waste a few seconds by bringing Valdez on for Soldado, as the play slows down completely.
    • 81' Lille make their last change as Digne replaces Chedjou, who looks a defeated man as he trudges off.
    • 79' Jonas received a yellow card just before he departed, for a late tackle...
    • 79' After his significant contribution Brazilian attacker Jonas goes off to a standing ovation as Parejo replaces hime.
    • 77' This could be a big ask for Lille now, they have had some bright moments this evening but their record at this level of competition is not great and their heads are down.
    • 75' That goal was fortunate in the manner it arrived but it seemed on the cards as Lille were hesitating and making silly mistakes at the back. Jonas almost didn't celebrate as if to admit he didn't mean it.
    • 74' GOAL!!! A freak goal as a mishit cross by Jonas eludes goalkeeper Landreau and loops into the Lille net.
    • 73' Mendes is brought off as Garcia gives French forward Rodelin a chance to enter the fray.
    • 71' Pedritti fouls Costa and is the second Lille player to receive a yellow card tonight.
    • 70' Feghouli finds some space on the right this time and has a chance to cross but miskicks and gives Lille a goal kick when he should have done better.
    • 68' Balmont is fouled by Costa on the Lille right and Garcia's men break forward, with Payet eventually testing Guaita again, the Spaniard standing firm between the Valencia posts.
    • 66' It's head tennis in the centre circle as the teams dispute possession before Pedretti gives away a free-kick for a foul on Gago.
    • 65' A great cross from Feghouli on the left gives Soldado a good chance to head at goal thought luckily for Lille the striker directs it over.
    • 63' Lille boss Garcia makes his first change of the night bringing on De Melo for Roux.
    • 61' Lille eventually get out of their half and Payet tries his luck from the edge of the box. Goal kick to Valencia.
    • 60' The home side are really enjoying a good spell on the ball here as they give the French visitors a run around in the centre of the park. No penetration at the moment though, despite some good invention from Gago.
    • 58' Plenty of joy for Valencia on the right wing with Spanish defender Barragán and Algerian midfielder Feghouli combining very nicely, surely they will continue to cause danger for the visitors as the half progresses.
    • 56' A great pass by Soldado plays Barragán through on the right and his low cross gives Jonas a chance to shoot, Lille conceding a corner and then clearing the danger.
    • 55' Lille's Payet drives in a low shot from outside the box and Spanish 'keeper Guaita warms his hands with a routine save.
    • 54' Cissokho runs into the box nowhere near the ball and pathetically dives for a penalty, with his claims fortunately waved away by the referee.
    • 52' Soldado breaks through on the right as Gago feeds him, then the forward overuns it and Lille have a goal kick. Soldado should have done better there.
    • 51' Pellegrino is screaming at the ref after by Debuchy on Delgado, but it's not a booking.
    • 49' Lille free kick in the centre of the pitch plays Debuchy in on the right, though again the Valencia defence stand firm.
    • 48' Lille are taking the initiative at the start of this half and Beria plays Mendes in, with the Cape Verdean winger worrying the Valencia defence in their area. Eventually the danger is cleared.
    • 47' Debuchy goes down injured after a challenge from Guardado, although no foul is awarded and play soon continues as the French international right back is quickly back on his feet.
    • 46' The teams are out again and we're underway. Lille had seven shots in the first half to Valencia's two, but it was the Spanish side who had most of the play, reducing Lille to counter attacks.
    • 45+2' The referee's assistant indicates that there will be two minutes of added time but as soon as we're ten seconds beyond 45 minutes Rocchi blows for half-time.
    • 43' Lille are pushing to draw level before the break and Sissokho gives away a free kick in a dangerous position with a foul on Balmont. The free is wasted again by Lille who fail to beat the first man.
    • 42' Debuchy now goes into the book for a very heavy challenge on Cissokho.
    • 41' A brilliant chance for a Lille equaliser as Payet is played through on goal, only for him to blaze wide at the near post after a good first touch.
    • 40' Lille have not reacted well to that goal, they look distraught and Valencia won't let them have the ball.
    • 38' Lille may feel a little hard done to as they were slowly coming into the game, but this Valencia side is full of talent and they are hungry after their average start to the season. A clinical finish by Jonas from inside the box into the bottom left hand side of the goal.
    • 37' GOAL!!! Jonas gives Valencia the lead after a nice through ball from Soldado and the home crowd are smiling at last.
    • 34' A good chance for Lille as Balmont storms into the box and smashes the ball across the goal and wide on the left, then Payet tests Guaita with a shot from outside the box and the 'keeper is equal to his effort.
    • 33' A ball from the right hand side sees played in and going down Jonas in the box. The home crowd appeal for a penalty and the referee says no.
    • 32' Barragán is booked for persistent fouling, his third heavy challenge of the night, this time on Gueye bringing out a yellow card.
    • 31' Valencia attempt to step up the pace with some nice play around the edge of the Lille box, though they are trying to walk their way into the goal and are getting nowhere.
    • 30' This is Valencia's 100th European Cup game. Nelson Valdez's goal on matchday one was their 150th in the competition.
    • 29' Lille are finally coming into the game and are starting to have spells of possession, so their manager Garcia will not be overly worried at this stage.
    • 28' Barragán again fouls Mendes, this time on the left hand side on the edge of Valencia's penalty area and Lille's Pedretti takes the free kick. A weak effort hits the Valencia wall and the danger is cleared.
    • 26' The Lille fans away in the far right hand corner as we see the play are making all the noise. They object loudly as Soldado fouls Landreau in the air and the referee agress that it's a free kick.
    • 25' Valencia's Barragán fouls Mendes in the centre of the park and Lille are able to press forward for a brief spell. Debuchy then fouls Guardado and Valencia move forwards themselves.
    • 24' Valencia have picked up five points from their opening five La Liga games, their worst start to a campaign since mustering just one in 1999/2000 – incidentally the season when they reached the UEFA Champions League final before losing to Real Madrid.
    • 22' Costa takes another corner for Valencia but a poor delivery means Lille get the opportunity to clear and break again. However they're unable to get forward in numbers.
    • 21' Valencia are consistently applying pressure down their right hand side and are keeping full back Beria very busy - thus far he's dealing with the challenge.
    • 19' Lille attacker Mendes forges forward in an inside right position and tries his luck from outside the box, but the ball dribbles wide. Neither team's strikers are threatening much thus far.
    • 18' Valencia's 'new' manager Pellegrino, the former Argentina international and one time assistant to Rafa Benítez at Liverpool and Inter, replaced Unai Emery at the helm at the Mestalla this summer.
    • 17' Valencia take a short corner to Guardado but it comes to nothing and the visitors mount a counter attack to relieve some pressure.
    • 15' Lille's Roux can't get near Gago so far in midfield and resorts to bringing him down, a straight forward foul for the referee to award.
    • 13' Soldado is yellow carded for a cynical foul on Beria on the Lille left, but from the resulting free kick the Frenchmen are unable to forge a clear opening.
    • 12' Valencia are really in charge thus far, with 60% of the possession thus far, a big contrast to their opening match at Bayern München, where they were bullied about, managing just 26% of possession.
    • 11' Gago again causing problems for Lille as he nearly plays Jonas in but the Lille 'keeper Landreau collects the through ball comfortably.
    • 10' Valencia are still controlling the play here, with Lille sitting off and absorbing the pressure in the opening exchanges. Valencia's Gago is the key man in midfield at this early stage.
    • 9' Both teams have won just two matches each in all competitions thus far this term, so tonight is a chance to kick-start their campaigns. Valencia are currently 10th in La Liga whilst Lille sit 15th in the French league table.
    • 7' A great through ball from Gago put Valencia's Feghouli in on goal and he really should score, but puts it harmlessly wide for a goal kick.
    • 6' Debuchy the Lille captain and right back finds some space down the right hand side and the French side get their first chance of the night, but Beria put a volley over the bar.
    • 4' Lille are really struggling to get out of their own half as Valencia have all of the ball, then the home side give their visitors a brief respite as they pass the ball back to goalkeeper Guaita for his first touch.
    • 3' Desperate defending by Lille as Valencia again press hard down the right. They have a couple of chances on goal before Soldado goes down looking for a penalty but the referee waves play on.
    • 2' Adil Rami serves a one-game ban for Valencia following his red card on matchday one. Rami was at Lille from 2006/07 to 2010/11 and a key player in their historic double in his last season there before joining the Spanish side.
    • 1' Lille take the kick-off and try to make inroads down the right and soon lose possession, Valencia counter down their right hand side but the ball goes out for a goal kick.
    • 0' We're underway. By the way tonight’s match referee is Italian official Gianluca Rocchi, who brings with him a team of Italian assistants and a wealth of Champions League refereeing experience.
    • 19.43 The Mestalla does not look anywhere near full, either the Spanish fans are arriving late or this game has not quite captured the Valencian public's imagination.
    • 19.41 We're just four minutes from kick-off and the players are lining up in the tunnel, with that iconic Champions League anthem ringing out.
    • 19.36 Valencia are unlikely to be intimidated going into tonight's game, they have a great record at home against French opponents in European competition, having won seven times against visitors from France. In fact Valencia are unbeaten in 15 games, home and away, against French sides since their opening leg defeat in the 1979/80 European Cup Winners' Cup semi-final when FC Nantes beat them 2-1 in France.
    • 19.31 The last time these two sides met in the Champions League in Valencia, the home side beat their French opponents 3-1 in December 2009, with two first half goals from Joaquín and a third from Juan Mata shortly after half time. How they would love to have those two in the team tonight.
    • 19.25 Tonight's match odds: Valencia 4/6, Lille 9/2, Draw 14/5.
    • 19.18 Also interesting to see that Vicente Guaita keeps his place between the posts for Valencia. He made his comeback after five months out at the weekend against Real Zaragoza and it was a successful return with Valencia keeping their first clean sheet of the season. So good for him.
    • 19.15 Despite Valencia manager Pellegrino playing down the importance of this game, both teams are desperate for a win this evening so this should be a competitive encounter. The opening night of Group F action two weeks ago saw Valencia going down 2-1 at Bayern Munich, while Lille were beaten 3-1 by FC BATE Borisov, their heaviest home European defeat ever. If you want to follow the Bayern vs BATE Borisov game tonight follow this link: Live commentary of Bayern vs BATE Borisov.
    • 19.10 Lille are under strength tonight as three of their attacking midfielders have failed late fitness tests. Kalou and Martin are missing, whilst Rodelin only makes the bench.
    • 19.05 So Valencia are without defenders Ricardo Costa (calf strain), Jeremy Mathieu (Achilles) and David Albelda (thigh), plus attacking midfielders Sergio Canales (knee) and Pablo Piatti (arm injury). Pellegrino has put his faith in youth team product Carlos Delgado in the heart of his defence.
    • 19.00 Our teams for tonight are: Valencia: Guaita, Barragán, Carlos Delgado, Víctor Ruiz, Cissokho, Gago, Tino Costa, Feghouli, Jonas, Guardado, Soldado… subs: Diego Alves, Pereira, Viera, Parejo, Portugués, Gaya, Valdez. /// Lille: Landreau, Debuchy, Béria, Chedjou, Basa, Balmont, Gueye, Pedretti, Payet, Mendes, Roux … subs: Elana, Digne, Rozehnal, Sidibé, De Melo, Bruno, Rodelin.
    • 18.55 Lille manager Rudi Garcia gives his perspective: "The Valencia match is key as we lost our first game against BATE. We have to score at the Mestalla, which won't be easy as we're talking about one of Spain's top sides. Both sides have injury problems, which will come into play, so I hope ours are overcome in time.
    • 18.50 Some mind games from Valencia boss Mauricio Pellegrino: "This match is not pivotal to our hopes as we have four more matches to come, 12 more points to contest. Whether we win, lose or draw, we'd have to win the other matches anyway. We have some injuries but we have 11 lads who are fit and ready and capable."
