    • 45+2' HALF TIME. Japan lead after a great first half but Italy almost completed the comeback just before the break.
    • 45+1' ITALY HIT THE WOODWORK! Giaccherini strikes the base of the post when pouncing on a loose ball in the box.
    • 45+1' Pirlo strikes another free-kick and this time hits the wall before drilling the rebound against a wall of Japan shirts too.
    • 45' We will have one added minute.
    • 43' Italy back in it then in what has been a hugely entertaining first half. Still, Japan have been by far the better side.
    • 41' GOAL! Italy 1-2 Japan! De Rossi with a firm header from a corner. Pirlo’s delivery is sumptuous and he picks out De Rossi, who has lost his marker to thunder a header home.
    • 40' CHANCE FOR ITALY! Montolivo plays in Pirlo and his deflected effort flies wide of the far post.
    • 40' Italy with a free-kick but Pirlo’s curler just floats over the bar from 25 yards, A decent attempt.
    • 38' Italy have been genuinely awful so far, bar Balotelli who is at least trying to make things happen.
    • 37' Endo stands over the free-kick and Buffon spills his decent effort into the air before blocking the rebound too.
    • 36' De Rossi is into the book for catching the ankle of Honda with a rather loose sliding tackle.
    • 34' Kagawa has been superb this evening. Central to everything Japan are doing.
    • 33' GOAL! Italy 0-2 Japan! The influential Kagawa produces a brilliant finish! Italy fail to deal with an aerial ball and when the ball is lofted back into the box, Kagawa spins to pounce on it and lashes his effort past Buffon.
    • 32' Japan swamp Italy once again after Okazaki robs Pirlo in the centre circle. Corner to Japan…
    • 30' A change for Italy as Sebastian Giovinco replaces Aquilani. He doesn’t look injured either.
    • 28' Yuto Nagatomo fires one in from 20 yards as Buffon scoops the ball into his arms. Another chance for Japan.
    • 27' Honda almost slices the Italy defence open to find Hasebe, who appears to be bought down by Christian Maggio. No foul though.
    • 26' Hasebe now drills one wide of the post as Japan press forward again.
    • 25' A fully deserved lead for Japan, even if the penalty was ropey. They have been by far the better side so far tonight.
    • 23' Well that makes things interesting in the group, with Japan level with Italy on three points as things stand. As for the penalty, it was the wrong decision, but having made the wrong decision it was also the wrong decision to not send Buffon off, if you catch my drift.
    • 22' GOAL! Italy 0-1 Japan! Honda strikes from the penalty spot!
    • 21' Buffon only gets a yellow card but replays show he was desperately unlucky as the keeper appeared to get the ball first.
    • 20' PENALTY TO JAPAN! Buffon brings down Okazaki.
    • 18' Endo with the corner for Japan but it’s a poor one and Italy clear.
    • 17' CHANCE FOR JAPAN! Kagawa lines one up from 30 yards and the ball accelerates off his left boot and swerves in the air before being tipped over the bar by Buffon.
    • 16' There’s a Mexican wave enveloping the stadium. Disappointing.
    • 15' Italy looking to feed Andrea Pirlo at every opportunity and now the ball finds Balotelli, who whacks a shot wide.
    • 14' Honda is knocked to ground by Daniele De Rossi but Japan take the ball on and Kagawa pings a pass to the left before a cross is dealt with by the Italy defence.
    • 12' Italy have weathered the early storm from Japan but it’s been a rather unimpressive start from the Azzurri, who start the day on three points, now three behind leaders Brazil.
    • 11' Balotelli finds space on the right after a neat run with the ball and his cross causes problems for Eiji Kawashima, who rather unconvincingly punches the ball out.
    • 9' Now Endo gets a shot away from range as he blasts the ball off target. Italy under pressure.
    • 8' Kagawa slips in Keisuke Honda with a nice pass and gets the ball back. The Manchester United playmaker then tries to tease the defence open with another pass but the offside flag is raised.
    • 7' Italy are really out of sorts here. They are struggling to cope with Japan’s energy.
    • 6' CHANCE FOR JAPAN! Kagawa supplies an absolutely brilliant cross from the left as he drops the ball over the head of Giorgio Chiellini and onto that of Ryoichi Maeda. However, the forward’s header is straight at Gianluigi Buffon, and he perhaps should have scored.
    • 4' Italy clear rather hurriedly and the ball drops nicely for Shinji Kagawa 20 yards from goal. However, he decides against the shot and the moment passes.
    • 3' Yasuhito Endo curls a delicious pass over the top of the Italy defence but Shinji Okazaki can’t quite get on the end of it to get a shot away.
    • 2' Mario Balotelli in the thick of things early on as he wins a free-kick to the Italy right. Nothing comes of the free-kick though.
    • 1' KICK OFF!
    • 22:55 Here come the teams and it's anthem time. Italy up first, as Zaccheroni keeps his mouth shut.
    • 22:50 Alberto Zaccheroni: “This game is just another stop on the road toward the World Cup for Japan, but for me, clearly it means a lot more than that. When I began my coaching career, I imagined a lot of things but not this. I never thought I would be coaching a team against Italy and in an official competition, too. This is no ordinary game. Out of respect for Japan, who have trusted me with the task of looking after their team, I don’t think I’ll be singing the Italian national anthem.”
    • 22:45 Cesare Prandelli: "Japan are a very good team and are dangerous as they have in Italian Alberto Zaccheroni a great coach who knows how to get the best out of them. It is difficult to talk about Mario. He is unpredictable but he is very motivated when he dons the blue shirt."
    • 22:40 Italy make two changes from the side that beat Mexico 2-1 in their opening game with Ignazio Abate and Claudio Marchisio dropping out to be replaced by Christian Maggio and Alberto Aquilani. Japan replace Hiroshi Kiyotake with Ryoichi Maeda.
    • 22:35 TEAMS: Italy: Buffon, Maggio, Chiellini, Barzagli, De Sciglio, Aquilani, De Rossi, Montolivo, Pirlo, Giaccherini, Balotelli. /// Japan: Kawashima, Nagatomo, Uchida, Konno, Yoshida, Honda, Endo, Kagawa, Hasebe, Maeda, Okazaki.
    • 22:30 Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Confederations Cup Group A clash between Italy and Japan in Recife. Brazil’s 2-0 win over Mexico means an Italy win here would send the hosts and the Azzurri into the semi-finals.

  1. How did Italy win?

    From 888, on Thu 20 Jun 22:52
  2. A goal festival between the blue masters of Europe and Asia. Poor performance in defence and middle lines, a failing win far Azzuri versus a winning fail for Samurais. This gamed demonstrated the fact that in the work of programming, nurturing native talents and strengthening sport infrastructures, Japan is 20 years ahead of ITALY.

From Amir, on Thu 20 Jun 7:33
  3. Trust the Italians to get a penalty out of nowhere.

From Victor B, on Thu 20 Jun 6:16
  4. Japan, such a joy to watch but hardly amounts to anything. Its heartbreaking and demoralising. Honda and Kagawa are world class and Endo, Hasebe and nagatomo are pretty decent. They've always lacked a solid goalie, when they have one; they'll start winning trophies.

From fun, on Thu 20 Jun 1:21
  5. You England haters are pathetic, every thread is full of negative comments by little jealous lady boys when England aren't even playing! It's just a few scrawny boys kicking around a bit of leather. I'm looking forward to when we play you in the rugby & show you how real men do sports. Btw you got a disgraceful penalty & should of lost!

From zoe, on Thu 20 Jun 1:12
  6. What a thriller. Thank you Japan for reminding people how much fun football can be.

From Antoine, on Thu 20 Jun 1:10

From ben, on Thu 20 Jun 0:22
  20. Kagawa has not impressed me at all. Manchester will slide down the table, allowing Arsenal to take firm control of the Barclay's League. We just have to bring in the right players with our 300m war chest. In SAW we trust!
