Confederations Cup - Suarez free-kick fails to deny Spain opening victory

Luis Suarez scored a fabulous free-kick, but it was not enough to prevent Uruguay from sliding to a 2-1 loss to Spain. More

    • 90+4' There goes the final whistle! A 2-1 win for Spain. More than deserved on the night. Three points to start this tournament with. Thanks for joining us.
    • 90+1' Casillas punches clear the Cavani cross. There will be serious questions asked by Spain if Uruguay were to snatch a late equaliser.
    • 89' We are into four minutes added on.
    • 88' Soldado races through on goal, but he is taken out late by Gonzalez. Clear penalty, but the referee says no. Awful decision.
    • 87' Saurez claiming he was taken out late by Martinez, but nothing doing. Casillas wallops the goalkick down the park.
    • 86' No chance for Casillas and suddenly Uruguay have a chance to earn a draw from a match in which they have been outplayed.
    • 85' GOAL! Suarez clips a free-kick over the wall and that is a stunning finish. 11 goals in 14 now for Uruguay.

    • 81' Juan Mata replaces Pedro for Spain. This match well and truly over. But was well and truly over since the break.
    • 80' Spain with 73 percent of possession. Uruguay only on 27 percent. Never going to do anything with that.
    • 79' Soldado uncorks a shot at from 25 yards. Decent hit, but straight into the arms of Muslera in the Uruguay goal.
    • 78' Pedro has pulled up out there. Looks like he has a touch of cramp.

    • 76' Will be hoping he doesn't come across Spain in this sort of form next summer.
    • 75' Coach Oscar Tabarez has taken charge of Uruguay at two World Cups, in 1990 (round of 16) and 2010, when he reached fourth place.
    • 74' On comes Javi Martinez for Spain, and off goes Xavi for the world champions.
    • 73' No yellow or red cards being handed out by the referee which does not please the Uruguay players.

    • 70' Gargano departs the scene to be replaced by Diego Forlan. Not a bad figure to be bringing on.
    • 69' The fans certainly enjoying these moments. Cavani caught just offside.
    • 68' Rodriguez fouled by Soldado, but Caceres then felled by Arbeloa. Uruguay can't get near the Spain goal.
    • 67' Xavi just fails to connect with the Soldado cutback. Uruguay bring it out.
    • 66' Get the impression that this second half is a bit futile. Certainly from Uruguay's point of view.
    • 65' Change for Spain as Cazorla takes over from Fabregas for the world champions.
    • 64' Pedro knocks a volley inches wide after an Iniesta shot was blocked. So close to a third Spanish goal.
    • 63' Lodeiro takes over from Gargano for Uruguay.
    • 62' Godin brings down Pedro as Uruguay look to make a change or two.
    • 61' Gonzalez fails to pick out Suarez. Spain break up the attack before passing the ball around.
    • 60' Muslera off his line to collect a high ball. Uruguay back in possession seconds later.
    • 59' Óscar Tabárez, the Uruguay coach, looks on. Not much he can say about this. Or do about it. Spain with all the ball.
    • 58' Soldado sees a shot blocked by Lugano. Should have looked to play in Pedro there.
    • 57' Xavi wallops a free-kick straight into a wall of white shirts, and Uruguay can bring this ball out from deep.
    • 56' Iniesta with the chance, but he drives the ball wide of goal from 20 yards out. Not a bad effort.
    • 55' Fabregas decides to have a go at goal from distance, but straight into the arms of Muslera.
    • 54' Iniesta stumbles at the key moment as Godin does the clearing up work for Uruguay.
    • 53' Xavi made 70 passes in the first half, only 25 fewer than Uruguay made in total.
    • 52' Busquets bundes Cavani to the deck with a late challenge. Cavani demanding a booking that doesn't come.
    • 51' Maxi Pereira catches Iniesta with a late challenge. Spain then go back to basics in keeping the ball with some relish.
    • 50' Soldado just fails to connect with the ball in the middle of the Uruguay box. Spain seeking a killer third goal.
    • 49' Pedro taken out of the action late by Caceres as he tried to control the ball out wide.
    • 48' Suarez manages to close down Pique as he tried to clear the danger. Suarez working hard for the cause.

    • 46' We are off and running then in the second half.
    • 45+1' There goes the whistle for the break. Spain lead 2-0 at half-time. Impressive stuff from the world champions.
    • 44' One minute to be added to this first half. A first period in which Spain have been utterly dominant.

    • 41' Spain are unbeaten in 22 matches. La Furia Roja have yet to concede a goal in the first round of the Confederations Cup.
    • 40' Maxi Pereira clatters Xavi with a late one. Uruguay can't get near this Spain side at the moment.
    • 39' A booking for Lugano for his efforts there. Spain have a free-kick, but opt to retain possession.
    • 38' Lugano guilty of more foul play in the air against Soldado. Illegal use of the arm.
    • 37' Stunning play by Iniesta as he danced into the heart of the opposition box. But Uruguay do enough to scramble it clear.
    • 36' Muslera saves from Pique. Reflex stop after Xavi had come up with the corner. Either side of the goalkeeper would have been a third goal for Spain.
    • 35' Perez doing enough to put Busquets off his stride. But that is a corner to Spain.
    • 34' Ball almost breaks to Lugano in the Spain area from Suarez's free-kick, but he slips at the vital moment enabling Casillas to collect.
    • 33' Pique has picked up a yellow card for wrestling Suarez to the ground.
    • 32' Uruguay were hoping to get Ramires on the ball, but he has been rendered a spectator for much of this match tonight.
    • 31' David Villa, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas make up half of only six players at this tournament to have scored in previous Confederations Cups.
    • 30' Spain in complete control. Could be more goals in this for the world champions this evening.
    • 29' GOAL Soldado slams the ball into the net from just inside the Uruguay box. Delightful pass by Fabregas to play him in.
    • 28' Soldado bundles Lugano to the ground. Free-kick to Uruguay in their own half.
    • 27' Suarez with a decent little free-kick into the Spain box. Cavani gets the header at goal, but easy enough stop for Casillas.
    • 26' Some horrid tackles flying in out there as Ramos is penalised for a poor tackle on Ramirez.
    • 25' Cavani has been booked for a late challenge on Sergio Ramos. Spain not happy about that one.
    • 24' Xavi sends the free-kick over the bar. That was not far away from the target. Muslera could only watch that one.
    • 23' Lugano penalised for a late challenge on Fabregas, and Spain will have a free-kick 25 yards from the Uruguay goal.
    • 22' Uruguay earn their first corner, but Suarez's delivery fails to trouble Spain who clear with little sweat.
    • 21' The rain teeming down as Spain look to rebuld from deep in their own half.
    • 20' Spain have not lost an international since they were defeated by England in November 2011 - won 17 and drawing five.
    • 19' So unfortunate for Uruguay, but difficult to suggest Spain are not worth their lead from this match.
    • 18' GOAL! Pedro sees a volley fly off Lugano and into the net. The Uruguay skipper suffers an own goal. No chance for Muslera. Spain lead 1-0.
    • 17' Spain earn a corner here courtesy of a challenge by Lugano. Xavi to take this corner.
    • 16' Three members of the Uruguay squad - Diego Lugano, Diego Godin and Cristian Rodriguez - played their football in Spain last season.
    • 15' Easy enough save in the end for the goalkeeper. Some of the Spanish passing has been a joy to behold. So, so easy on the eye.
    • 14' Iniesta with the shot from the edge of the Uruguay box, but Muslera comes up with the save.
    • 13' Busquets blocked by Perez. Referee decides that is unacceptable. Spain go short with the free-kick before retaining possession.
    • 12' Uruguay come into this match on the back of two straight victories, but they have not been out of their own half so far.
    • 11' Sergio Busquets wins a free kick in his own half after being felled by Cavani.
    • 10' Perez does enough to make the tackle on Iniesta. Some wonderful passing movements by Spain. So, so comfortable on the ball.
    • 9' And once again Spain go all the way back to their own defence to start again.
    • 8' Fabregas smashes a shot across the goal with Muslera beaten, but it comes off the post from the edge of the Uruguay box. Almost but not quite for the world champions.
    • 7' Spain with 92 percent possession at the moment which tells you the manner in which this game is working out so far.
    • 6' Busquets picks out Iniesta with a nice pass, but Perez comes up with a timely challenge to recover possession.
    • 5' Iniesta takes the ball beyond Ramires, but Uruguay recover to win it back. The South Americans being pressed back into their own half at the moment. Can't get out.
    • 4' Typical Spanish build-up. Keep the ball with some relish before hitting at pace against the white shirts. Spain back in possession seconds later.
    • 3' Great ball into the box by Alba, but Soldado just fails to convert in the middle. Superb piece of play by Alba.
    • 2' Casillas picks up the ball in his own box after Uruguay tried to hit on the break with Fabregas loosing possession. Spain back into their passing mode seconds later.
    • 1' We are off and running then in this one.
    • 10:55 Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez: "It is redundant to say that Luis Suarez is a great player, the best striker in the world ... It is something that helps the team a lot. It is important to rearrange the rest of the team on offence.. Suárez has the great ability to get rid of his marker and create a situation for himself or his companions. He has team spirit, and we suffered with him being out of that last game. I always believed he could make a great career in the national team."
    • 10:50 Spain coach Vicente del Bosque: "Physically we are better - and, in fact, better now than when we came. We head to Brazil in good shape. There is a good atmosphere in the team and the players are relaxed after such an intense season. We are confident, but we have to pay attention to all our opponents in the Confederations Cup, because they are all good sides. Everyone in this squad is very good, every player is a regular starter for their respective clubs, and we have a very difficult task."
    • 10:45 Uruguay have Luis Suarez back in contention after the Liverpool forward missed Tuesday's World Cup qualifying win over Venezuela through suspension. Suarez joins Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani in an attack-minded line-up.
    • 10:40 Spain stick with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who has not played for club side Real Madrid since January. They go with Roberto Soldado as a traditional striker rather than Cesc Fabregas in a 'false nine'.
    • 10:35 Teams: Spain: Casillas, Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Piqué, Jordi Alba, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc, Pedro, Soldado////Uruguay: Muslera, Pereira, Lugano, Godín, Cáceres, D. Pérez, Gargano, ‘Cebolla’ Rodriguez, G.Ramírez, Luis Suárez, Cavani

  14. You can't score goals if you don't have the ball. When Uruguay do get it, they need to do more than giving it away. Saurez and Cavani have been excluded from the pitch, exactly what Spain intended to do.

  20. Theo Never mind Tahiti (no disrespect) because they have no football tradition There are only a few teams in the world who can live with Spain playing at their best Brazil, Italy and Germany not many more can cope with the Spaniards In saying this Spain win a lot of matches by the odd goal and are not prolific goal scorers
