    • - What did you make of the game? Were Espanyol unlucky not to find the net? What was wrong with Real Madrid in the second half? Tweet me (@grahamruthven)!
    • - Real Madrid can count themselves fairly lucky to take a 1-0 lead into the second leg after that second half display. Espanyol deserved something out the game and credit to Aguirre for getting his team to have a go after the break. But in the end Los Blancos' quality shone through.
    • 94' FULL TIME: Espanyol 0-1 Real Madrid
    • 93' Real Madrid sub: Gareth Bale OFF, Jese Rodriguez ON.
    • 92' YELLOW CARD: Abraham Gonzalez (Espanyol)
    • 91' Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the second half.
    • 90' Madness in the box! Alex arrives late at the box post to meet a deep cross on the volley but his shot is cleared off the line by Marcelo and then bounces off numerous players before being cleared!
    • 89' Espanyol sub: Pizzi OFF, Christian Stuani ON.
    • 88' The Real Madrid fans inside the stadium are giving the 'Viva Espana' chants an airing. You wouldn't expect any less when they're winning 1-0 in Barcelona.
    • 87' Moreno makes a huge challenge to deny Marcelo in the box! Great defending! That was crucial. If Marcelo had been allowed to get he shot away he would have scored.
    • 86' Real Madrid are making a bit of a hash of this. This should have been a comfortable win, especially after the first half, but they've allowed Espanyol to come back into the game and they're pressing for a leveler!
    • 85' That was a massive opportunity for the home side. You just wonder how that play would have turned out had it been Garcia on the end of the pass.
    • 84' WHAT. A. CHANCE! Cordoba is slotted through on goal by Garcia, and the big striker takes a great touch to take the ball away from Pepe and into a one-on-one situation with Casillas. But the keeper makes a huge save to preserve his side's lead!
    • 83' YELLOW CARD: Victor Sanchez (Espanyol)
    • 82' Real Madrid's defensive organisation doesn't look great at the moment. Despite being camped in their own half they afford Pizzi huge amounts of space on the left side to take down a long ball. Fortunately for them nothing comes of it.
    • 80' Ancelotti looks to be playing Isco in the false nine position now.
    • 79' Can Espanyol crank up the pressure one last time before full time? They've looked dangerous at times tonight but have nothing to show for their efforts. Garcia is still on the pitch, and he's been their best player.
    • 78'
    • 77' Real Madrid sub: Karim Benzema OFF, Isco ON.
    • 76' Real Madrid come surging forward on the counter attack, with Ronaldo driving down the left side. But when the ball is passed to Bale, who cuts in onto his left foot, he smashes his shot well over the bar. Disappointing.
    • 75' Espanyol sub: Gabriel Torje OFF, Jhon Cordoba ON.
    • 74' With that change you could guess that Ancelotti wants his side to calm down the pace of the game and who better to do that than Xabi Alonso?
    • 73' Real Madrid sub: Angel Di Maria OFF, Xabi Alonso ON.
    • 71' I've been impressed with the way Espanyol have responded in this second half. Real Madrid have had a few chances of their own but the home side are putting pressure on Casillas.
    • 70' The home side have a couple of chances in quick succession but Pizzi first of all misplaces his pass out to Garcia, but when the ball is crossed back into the box Pizzi slams his shot into the body of Modric.
    • 69' Espanyol come forward and win a corner kick but Ronaldo is back on defensive duty and rises about five feet above everyone else to head away at the near post. Is there anything he can't do?
    • 68'
    • 67' Some sloppy defending gives Benzema the chance to sprint into acres of space, but when he bears down on goal he makes the wrong decision, choosing to shoot instead of rolling the ball to Ronaldo. Casilla makes the save.
    • 65' Xabi Alonso and Dani Carvajal are warming up for Real Madrid. Is Ancelotti about to make a change?
    • 64' Arbeloa again! In almost exactly the same fashion the Real Madrid fullback is played through on goal and the angle tight, just like it was a few minutes ago, he shoots at Casilla, just like he did a few minutes ago.
    • 63' Ronaldo isn't happy with Arbeloa. He wanted the pass across the face of goal!
    • 62' Benzema and Arbeloa play a great little one-two on the edge of the box, threading their waut through the Espanyol defence but with the angle getting tighter Arbeloa sees his shot saved.
    • 61' Di Maria plays a great scooped pass in behind the Espanyol defence where Marcelo is making the run but Casilla comes off his line very quickly to make the save.
    • 60' Real Madrid seem to have seen off the Espanyol pressure that was building over the past 10 minutes or so. They have the ball and are calming the contest down by knocking it around, Barca style.
    • 58' Ronaldo should have done better with that. I think the jump of Benzema infront of him might have put him off.
    • 57' This time Real Madrid get into the final third on the break, with Di Maria crossing into the box for Ronaldo and Benzema, but the former mistimes his leap and powers his header into the turf and over the bar.
    • 56' The home side are dominating possession at the moment! Ronaldo tries to break but is stopped in his tracks before he can even reach the halfway line.
    • 55' Espanyol have come out all guns firing in the second half and the home crowd are getting behind them. They're having a go and Garcia is causing the Real Madrid backline all kinds of problems.
    • 54' And now Garcia creates a chance for himself out of nothing, occupying four Real Madrid players, but he manages to work a yard of space and prods his shot wide.
    • 53' So close! Garcia, who has been Espanyol's best player by some distance tonight, cuts inside onto his left foot on the edge of the box and curls a shot inches past the post. He's so unlucky there!
    • 52' Garcia gets out to the ring wing to play a really dangerous cross into the box but his teammates can't rise high enough and Real Madrid come away with the ball.
    • 51' Looking at replays of the incident Di Maria sticks his leg out but he makes no contact and Torje has tried to imply contact. Should that have been a booking? Looked like a dive to me.
    • 50' Torje goes down in the box under the challenge of Di Maria, and looks around asking for a spot kick, but the referee waves away his claims for a penalty.
    • 49' Bale picks up the ball on the left wing and drives all the way to the right before crossing into the box, but Sidnei does well to get his head on the ball to clear.
    • 48' Alex, who has just come on for Espanyol, used to play for Real Madrid's B side. He'll presumably be pumped up for this game. He's a passing midfielder who will give the home side more of a presence in the centre.
    • 47' Ronaldo chips a low cross into the box, but Casilla decides to come off his line and punch into the legs of Bale, with the ball flashing past the post. That was lucky!
    • 46' Espanyol sub: Manuel Lanzarote OFF, Alex Fernandez ON.
    • 45' We're back under way between Espanyol and Real Madrid!
    • - What did you make of the first half? Should Real Madrid be further ahead? Is it time Bale started hitting freekicks instead of Ronaldo? Tweet me (@grahamruthven)!
    • - Not a bad choice, is it?
    • - Benzema's goal seperates the two sides at the break but in reality Real Madrid could have had more. Ronaldo has had his chances and maybe should have found the net by now. Espanyol have been restricted to counter attacks but Garcia looks their biggest threat.
    • 45' HALF TIME: Espanyol 0-1 Real Madrid
    • 44' And now Arbeloa has a shot on goal after meeting Ronaldo's cut back but the fullback blazes his effort well over the bar.
    • 43' Great save by Casilla! Bale strikes the freekick and wobbles the ball in more than one direction, dipping swerving, and forcing the Casilla keeper into a wonderful save. That would have been a brilliant goal.
    • 42' Modric wins a freekick 20 yards out when Lanzarote swipes at his ankles, bringing him down. So Ronaldo or Bale?
    • 41' Ronaldo is getting frustrated now and when he gets the ball 25 yards he decides to shoot when he had better options in front of him. His effort drifts harmlessly by the post.
    • 40'
    • 39' Bale comes surging forward down the right on the counter attack but with only Ronaldo to aim for in the centre he plants his cross into the side netting.
    • 38' Terrible decision by the linesman! Ilarramendi plays a wonderful long ball from inside his own half, releasing Ronaldo through on goal but he's flagged for offside when he was clearly in his own half when the ball was played!
    • 37' Benzema comes close to added a second, working a good shooting position after a one-two with Bale but Casilla gets down to save with his legs.
    • 36' Sidnei hasn't learned his lesson and doesn't close down Ronaldo on the edge of the box. But the Espanyol defender gets lucky once again with Ronaldo flashing his low drive past the left hand post.
    • 35' Real Madrid are cranking up the pressure as the final 10 minutes of the first half come into play. Can they find a second before the break? That would really put them in command of this tie.
    • 34' He might not have the record of Ronaldo or Lionel Messi but Benzema's goalscoring should be recognised as well. He's been in great form over the past couple of seasons.
    • 33'
    • 32' Illarramendi must know that Casillas is left footed? That was a very strange backpass to give his keeper.
    • 31' Almost a horror own goal by Real Madrid! Illarramendi plays a speedy backpass to Casillas, who tries to recover the situation, but can only watch as the ball dribbles out for a corner kick. Misunderstanding.
    • 30' There's a sparkling look in Ronaldo's eyes that suggests that at some point tonight he will catch light and he'll burn a whole through the net. He looks in the mood, even if not much has come off so far.
    • 29' I wonder how much Pizzi is ruing that missed chance from earlier in the half. He could have put his side 1-0 up and now instead they're chasing the game.
    • 27' That was Benzema's 13th goal of the season and I believe his 101st goal for Real Madrid. He's in great form at the moment.
    • 26' Now Benzema is out on the wing and plays a brilliant cross into the box for Ronaldo, who turns his back to goal and tries an audacious overhead kick, but he just fails to make contact. That was close.
    • 25' GOAL! Espanyol 0 Real Madrid 1 (25 mins - Karim Benzema). The French striker reacts quickest to Bale's flick-on at the near post and heads beyond Casilla, who can't quite claw it away.
    • 24' Real Madrid are controlling the ball at the moment, with Modric pulling the strings from his position in the centre of midfield. I know I've said it already but he really is a class act.
    • 23' Sidnei gave Ronaldo far too much space on the edge of the box when he received the pass from Modric. Aguirre is on the touchline pointing that out to his defender. He can't do that again.
    • 22' Espanyol may be enjoying a good spell but that's a warning of what Real Madrid can do to you at any one time.
    • 21' Ronaldo hits the post! The Real Madrid number seven takes control of the ball just inside the box, performs a great turn and shoots across the face of goal, but his shot rebounds off the inside of the woodwork!
    • 20' Espanyol are looking dangerous on the attack. Sergio Gomez in particular is causing the Real Madrid defence problems. Can they make the most of that advantage though?
    • 19' Real Madrid should really be trailing here. That was a glorious chance for Pizzi. I can't believe he didn't hit the target at least!
    • 18' What a chance! Sergio Garcia does brilliantly to get to the byline after beating Marcelo and Ramos before squaring for Pizzi. He has all the goal to aim at from about eight yards but he blasts over! Oh dear.
    • 17'
    • 16' Bale gets his head on a corner kick delivery but he gets too much of a connection on his effortat the near post and the ball sails over the bar.
    • 15' Ronaldo tries to get down the outside of Rodriguez but the makeshift rightback gets a block in to prevent the ball from making it into the penalty area. The corner kick comes to nothing.
    • 14' Espanyol whips a corner kick into the box where Sidnei and Moreno are up from the back but the ball is punched away by Casillas. That wasn't great goalkeeping by the Spain number one!
    • 13' What has been interesting to watch under Ancelotti is that with Alonso and Khedira out injured Di Maria has been played as a central midfielder. And what's more is that he's actually been quite good there!
    • 12'
    • 11' It's all a little subdued at the moment. The strong lineup from Real Madrid suggests Ancelotti wants to get this tie over and done with in the first leg, so he can maybe rest a few players when they play the return leg. Arrogance?
    • 10' Just for your reference, away goals do count in the Copa Del Rey.
    • 9' Espanyol try to make progress by playing a ball down the channel for Garcia to chase but Pepe comes across and uses his strength to make the tackle and come away with possession.
    • 8' Of course, Real Madrid were in Barcelona last week to play Espanyol, winning the game 1-0 in what was a relatively tight affair. Will we see the same kind of contest tonight or will it be more open?
    • 7' Ancelotti took time to praise Luka Modric during the week. It's incredible to think back to when he was voted the worst signing of last season. You could now argue that besides Ronaldo he is Real Madrid's most important player!
    • 6' The visitors are taking control of the game. So far in 2014 they've scored 13 times and have yet to concede once. Formidable, to say the least!
    • 4' First sight of goal for Real Madrid with Ronaldo taking control of the ball inside the penalty area but after a few step overs he flashes a shot just past the far post.
    • 3' Indeed, it was a mistake. Torje's cross went straight out of play. Shouldn't have been a corner kick.
    • 2' The home side come forward with Torje driving into the box from the right side, beating Marcelo with ease, but his cross is sent out for a corner kick which eventually comes to nothing.
    • 1' We're under way between Espanyol and Real Madrid!
    • 19:57 Not long until kick-off now in Barcelona.
    • 19:55 Pre-match odds: Espanyol 9/1, Draw 4/1, Real Madrid 1/4.
    • 19:50 Real Madrid dragged themselves into the title race at the weekend, with just one point seperating them with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the top of the table, but can they carry their good form into the Copa Del Rey?
    • 19:45 So the big team news is that Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, the two most expensive players in the world, both start for Real Madrid. Can Bale step up and turn in a good performance? He's been a little quiet since coming back from injury.
    • 19:40 TEAM NEWS: Espanyol - Raul Rodriguez, Sidnei, Moreno, Capdevilla, Victor Abraham, Lanzarote, Pizzi, Torje, Sergio Garcia. /// Real Madrid - Casilla, Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Illarramendi. Modric, Bale, Di Maria, Ronaldo, Benzema.
