90+3'
Spurs almost humiliated as Benfica launch a final attack, but Siqueira can't quite finish it off. The whistle goes immediately afterwards, and boos echo around the ground. This was a miserable night for Tottenham, and Tim Sherwood will be feeling the pressure now. Benfica were excellent, and will be very confident about progressing to the net stage, where they could face their arch-rivals Porto.
90+1'
Benfica look to counter and finish off Spurs completely, but Gaitan's attempted chip is the wrong shot and Lloris claims it.
90'
Spurs almost find Soldado in space in the area, but Luisao gets there before him and makes the tackle.
89'
Spurs have been shockingly bad here, but there have been some fine performances from the visitors. Notably Amorim and Rodrigo, but none moreso than Luisao.
87'

Final substitution for Benfica, Lima replacing the rather good Rodrigo.
Benfica Substitution
85'
Some other drama as Tim Sherwood reacts with the passion and heart that his team apparently so desperately lack, doing wonderfully to start a pointless shoving match with Jorge Jesus on the touchline. Dignity, always dignity....
84'

Goal! Spurs hopes are in ruins. The free-kick comes in to Ezequiel Garay, but Lloris made the save. Unfortunately for Tottenham, he spilled it at the feet of Luisao, and the centre-back almost bursts the net with a thunderous close-range finish. A sublime performance from the Benfica captain.

Tottenham cannot get the ball up field to try to equalise, and now Naughton brings down Gaitan. A free-kick to Benfica...

Another change for Spurs, Nabil Bentaleb coming on to replace Sandro.

Vertonghen has not exactly covered himself in glory here, but he won't be able to redeem himself in the second leg. Just after coming back on the pitch, he scythes down Gaitan and earns a yellow card and a suspension.

The excellent Ruben Amorim goes into the book for a rather needless foul. Benfica looking to kill the game here.
79'
Vertonghen looks like he could be nursing an injury here, which is worrying for Spurs, who already have Vlad Chiriches and Michael Dawson out.
78'
Spurs go on the prowl for an equaliser, but Kaboul gives away a cheap foul on the right wing and the attack ends.
76'
Christian Eriksen's free-kick might have sparked a comeback but twice Spurs have almost thrown it away and ended up even worse off. Lloris does seem far too keen to come out at times, and the team as a whole are too eager to hand goal to their opponents.

That was almost all over for Spurs there! A long, hopeful ball from Rodrigo led to absolute chaos as Vertonghen and Lloris hesitated and Rodrigo bore down. The Spaniard actually got past the Frenchman but he was able to just about claw it away and prevent a certain goal, before Spurs dealt with the corner. Tottenham all over the shop.
72'
Close for Benfica now - Gaitan sends in a fine cross from the left, which comes to Amorim on the edge of the area, but it doesn't quite sit comfortably enough for him and Spurs are able to crowd him and block the shot.
71'
Tottenham go fairly close again, a free-kick finding Younes Kaboul at the back post, but he cushions it when power is required, and Oblak saves.
69'
The game has opened up a bit since the goal but Benfica have certainly not collapsed after conceding. They look as robust as previously.
67'

Double subsitution for Benfica - off go Cardozo and Sulejmani, on come Argentinian duo Nicolas Gaitan and Enzo Perez.

66'
Benfica almost equalised immediately through Rodrigo escaping at the other end, but he looked for the pass and didn't find it.

Goal! What an absolutely fantastic goal from by far Spurs' best player tonight. Christian Eriksen steps up and hammers in a brilliant strike to claw one back from Spurs, and now things are looking up. Can Spurs now drive themselves on? And can Benfica hold firm?

That's better though - good work from Naughton and Eiksen gets Kane on the ball, and he wins a free-kick just outside the area.

This started off promisingly for Spurs, but it's getting worse and worse. This is looking like a very bad night, and there is very little out there to suggest that the final score is going to look any better for Tottenham than the current one.
59'
The goal aside, Luisao has been excellent tonight. He really has been superb for Benfica in recent years, and had the quality to play at the very highest level.
58'

But now they do score! It's Luisao from the corner! The veteran centre-back is poorly marked and glances a fine header into the bottom corner. Spurs in real trouble now.
Benfica Goal

Header - Bottom Right

57'
Huge escape for Tottenham! Kane has the ball deep in midfield and tries to dribble past his man. He loses it, and Amorim snaffles up the ball and bears down on goal. He opts for power rather than placement but Lloris is able to tip it over. Huge let-off.
56'
Spurs have not exactly come flying out of the traps here - they can't get into their rhythm at all. Some sort of change is desperately needed. And it might well be Adebayor - now he gets in the way of a Paulinho ball for Eriksen, halting a decent attack.
54'
A lack of heart does not appear to be Spurs' problem tonight, at least. They've been fairly poor all over the pitch so far, with pretty much everyone playing well beneath themselves. Sandro has done quite well to hold the midfield together but his coat's on a shoogly peg at the moment after that early yellow.
52'
Aaron Lennon cuts inside and lets fly with his left foot, but he doesn't get any power on it, trickling it along the turf. It's an easy save for Oblak.
51'
Adebayor has been causing problems tonight but that really was truly abysmal from him. Soldado's chances of getting on soon have just increased, one suspects. Spurs need a cutting edge.
49'
A huge miss for Tottenham! Eriksen does well to advance through the centre of the pitch and finds Adebayor all on his own, somehow onside, with the goal gaping and completely unmarked. Unfortunately, he makes a real hash of it, slicing it right across goal. That was an awful finish, it really was.
48'
Spurs fans do not appear to be entirely happy with the lack of changes. Andros Townsend and Roberto Soldado will, you would think, see some action at some point this evening.
46'
And here we go. What can Spurs do? Sherwood has not made any changes at half-time, and neither has his counterpart Jorge Jesus.
44'
Fejsa picks Eriksen's pocket and finds Cardozo, who is inches away from sending Markovic clean through, but the ball is just cut out. Spurs haven't been that bad, but Benfica have been far more incisive.
43'
The atmosphere at White Hart Lane has not quite reached truly poisonous levels, but the Spurs fans are not waiting to jeer and groan at their players. Particularly here, when Paulinho's poor attempt at a through-ball goes directly to the Benfica defence.
41'
A direct ball for Adebayor initially looks promising, but Eriksen's pass hangs in the air for too long and Garay and Luisao just about deal with the Togolese striker's physicality to get it clear.
41'
A direct ball for Adebayor initially looks promising, but Eriksen's pass hangs in the air for too long and Garay and Luisao just about deal with the Togolese striker's physicality to get it clear.
39'
Spurs pry through Kane and Sandro to try and find their way to an equaliser, but Eriksen's eventual cross is cleared. Benfica look to counter through Rodrigo but he can't quite get on the end of the clearance.
37'
Rodrigo's goal has jiggered Spurs' rhythm, and Benfica can get the ball down and play it in the Tottenham half for the first time. Amorim tries another defence-splitter for Sulejmani, but the hosts' defence marshal it well this time.
36'
One way or another, Sandro is not going to be on the pitch at the end of this game. He's just clattered someone else, and he's already on a yellow.
34'
It's a poor one from Eriksen, and Benfica clear easily. Sandro attempts to hoist it back in, but it's out for a goal-kick.
33'
Now Spurs look to fight back. More good work from Lennon down the right, but he can't get a ball in, although he does win Spurs' fifth corner of the match.
31'
Spurs were well on top until the last few minutes, when they just seemed to crumble. Their defensive line was both high and compact, and once Vertonghen failed to intercept, Rodrigo was miles clear.
29'

GOAL! Benfica take the lead at White Hart Lane! It's Rodrigo with the goal - Amorim played a slide-rule pass that Jan Vertonghen perhaps ought to have intercepted, but the young Spaniard comes in from the right and curls it beyond Lloris into the bottom corner.
Benfica Goal

Left Footed - Bottom Left

28'
Benfica much better now - Rodrigo almost plays in Markovic, but Lloris claims. The Spurs backline is not looking an overly confident one.
26'
And now almost disaster from Spurs - shoddy positioning allows Lazar Markovic to bear down on goal through the right channel, but he tries... something, a centre or a backheel. Whatever it was, he fluffed it badly, scuffing it into the turf and allowing Spurs to recover.
24'
Almost disaster for Oblak! The goalkeeper, making his debut here, came out to deal with a loose Kaboul header, but suddenly realised he'd come out of his area and had to retreat under pressure from Eriksen. That could've been a huge slice of luck for Spurs, but eventually the young keeper recovers.
22'
Benfica can't make anything stick up front and are struggling to get out of their own half here, although Spurs aren't looking overwhelmingly dangerous just yet. Kane tries to pick out Adebayor at the far post, but the ever-alert Luisao deals with it.
21'
Spurs having plenty of corners here - this time Eriksen has a shy from the left, but it's cleared, and so is the second.
19'
The corner then finds Paulinho, but takes him by surprise, bouncing off his chest. Seconds later he misses a very easy chance as the ball trickles through to him, but was offside anyway.
18'
A long punt forward finds Kane, but the youngster elects not to control it and go himself but head it across to Adebayor - a decent idea, but it's cut out. Spurs earn a corner, which comes to nothing, and then another. Pressure building from the hosts.
17'
Much better from Spurs - Aaron Lennon goes on a superb run down the flank before trying to pick out Adebayor, who is causing Benfica problems. They eventually get it clear, but Spurs intercept and resume the pressure.
16'
Spurs' first real attack of the game sees Sandro receive a cutback on the edge of the area. He has some form here, but it does him no good tonight. He absolutely skied that one.
15'
It's still extraordinarily scrappy - Eriksen drifts into midfield, since every other player on the pitch is there and well, why miss out - and almost finds a ball through to Harry Kane but it's cut out.
13'
If football matches were twelve minutes long, this would be a poor one. Fortunately, they're not. It appears, however, that the pattern of Spurs seeing most of the ball and Benfica looking dangerous on the counter, has been set for the evening.
11'
Guilherme Siqueira, recently linked with Real Madrid, is fortunate not to end up in the book after he clatters Lennon. Spurs attack quickly and try to find Adebayor, but Benfica manage to get it clear.
9'

It's an early yellow card for Sandro. Benfica attempt to spring a counter-attack as a Spurs move breaks down, and the Brazilian cynically haulsl down Miralem Sulejmani.

Pierluigi Collina, who achieved a status of being overrated very seldom seen in officiating, is in the stands.
7'
Benfica have a free-kick, ready to be whipped in from deep. Luisao is the target but Hugo Lloris snuffs out the danger.
6'
Spurs just about on top here - Paulinho has not looked to be the player we thought he was, and has so far done nothing to persuade anyone otherwise tonight, but there's plenty of time to go. He misplaces a couple of passes and prevents the hosts from getting going and setting their rhythm.
4'
No chances as of yet, with both sides taking the opportunity to feel each other out, both tactically and literally. A lot of niggly fouls in the opening minutes.
2'
A scrappy start, but Spurs are, at least, looking less anarchic than they did against Chelsea. Everybody appears to be playing in vaguely the correct position.
1'
And we're away.
22:06
The teams are back out, and Spurs are ready to kick off.
22:03
Spurs seem to be finding new ways to cause problems for themselves in every game, and new players to do it. It really is hard to tell exactly what is wrong with this team, which probably doesn't bode well for Tim Sherwood's chances of winning a new contract or even seeing this one out.
21:53
And that's that - there goes the half-time whistle. Spurs trailing to Benfica, who took the leada through a quite excellent finish from Rodrigo. They've had most of the ball, Spurs, but they've done little with it. Improvement needed in the second half.
21:00
The iconic Europa League theme tune is sounded, which means kick-off cannot be far away. We'll tell our grandchildren of these nights, and that tune.
20:55
"Kane is recently part of the first team squad at Tottenham Hotspur and is even considered to be a better player than Roberto Soldado, according to their P.E. Teacher/manager Tim Sherwood." Not my words, the words of Harry Kane's Wikipedia page, presumably now swiftly re-edited.
20:50
Speaking of Porto, they've just put Rafael Benitez's Napoli to the sword 1-0 in Portugal. Both they and their rivals here at White Hart Lane tonight are more than in with a chance of winning it, and Benfica would love to eclipse their rivals on the European stage too.
20:43
There's been a lot of debate about Sherwood's press conference, varying from some fans coming out to support his comments, and others saying it made him "sound like a radio phone-in caller." Which was not intended to be complimentary. I suppose we'll see whether it worked or not tonight.
20:37
Unfortunately for him, Spurs' Spanish striker is only on the bench tonight, although he may be a decent option if Adebayor and Kane can't produce the goods.

5 - Including the qualifying stages, Roberto Soldado has scored five goals in five appearances for Spurs in Europe this season. Deadly.

20:32
So, that's a surprising start for Harry Kane, while Spurs have a powerful Brazilian duo of Sandro and Paulinho in midfield. Emmanuel Adebayor is also in, and Christian Eriksen and Aaron Lennon will work the wings. A solid-looking team from Tim Sherwood, and Kane's pace could well unsettle the rather sluggish Benfica centre-back pairing of Ezequiel Garay and the old veteran Luisao.
20:32
TOTTENHAM: Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Naughton, Lennon, Paulinho, Sandro, Eriksen, Adebayor, Kane. Subs: Friedel, Rose, Soldado, Townsend, Chadli, Fryers, Bentaleb. /// BENFICA: Oblak, Silvio, Luisao, Garay, Siqueira, Fejsa, Amorim, Sulejmani, Rodrigo, Cardozo, Markovic. Subs: Moraes, Djuricic, Lima, Jardel, Gaitan, Almeida, Perez.
20:28
With Tim Sherwood looking like he was on the verge of losing the plot at the end of Tottenham's thumping to Chelsea and fourth place looking increasingly distant, the Europa League may have gone from a distraction to a chance for salvation for both the manager and the club. A final stab at glory can be made here, but first they'll have to overcome Benfica, flying high in the league as they look to break Porto's stranglehold on Portugal.
