    • 90+5' There's the final whistle! Manchester United have survived a real scare, avoiding defeat to Southampton, who deserve great credit for their performance.
    • 90+4' Now Giggs wins a free-kick. He was having his shirt pulled, but the way he stopped and appealed for the free-kick was very Cristiano Ronaldo.
    • 90+3' Butterfield makes a frustrated trip on Nani, and that is a yellow card.
    • 90+2' Again the decision goes the way of the visitors, as Hernandez wins a free-kick on the United left.
    • 90+1' The Southampton fans are making plenty of noise, but more in hope than expectation. They just cannot get hold of the ball. Frustration.
    • 90' Four minutes of stoppage time will be played.
    • 89' When Southampton finally do win it, with a Schneiderlin tackle on Nani, Martin Atkinson blows for a free-kick.
    • 88' United are doing a good job slowing the ball down and just keeping possession. Southampton look knackered.
    • 86' Nani torments Southampton with some ball skills before falling theatrically. No penalty. He then crosses for Hernandez who is beaten in the air.
    • 85' Jonny Evans is suffering a spot of cramp - United have made all three changes. Possibly an indication of his lack of football. No way he should be cramping up really...
    • 84' Southampton: Oscar Gobern replaces Richard Chaplow.
    • 83' United win a free-kick on the right, whipped in by Giggs and punched well by Bialkowski...
    • 81' Lindegaard spills a Harding cross and Evans bails him out with an alert clearance!
    • 80' Southampton: Dany N'Guessan comes on for Guly - a debut for the winger, who is on loan from Leicester.
    • 79' Owen has livened right up since scoring. He tries to find the overlapping Brown but Harding cuts it out.
    • 78' Another goal for Hernandez, who will surely be pushing for a regular start before too long - especially the way Rooney is playing.
    • 77' This is harsh on Southampton, who immediately win a corner, claimed easily by Anders Lindegaard.
    • 76' GOAL!! UNITED LEAD!! JAVIER HERNANDEZ!! Owen wins it off Ryan Dickson, Giggs plays Hernandez through and the Mexican's shot rolls into the net via the post after Bialkowski gets a slight touch on it.
    • 75' That would have been your headline right there. Chamberlain gets into shooting position but drags his shot a yard or so wide from long range.
    • 74' Nani tees up his own volley and cracks it goalwards... Bialkowski makes a good low stop.
    • 73' Southampton: Ryan Dickson replaces Lee Barnard.
    • 72' HARDING!! Southampton play the corner short and the left-back flashes a cross-shot in front of goal and it goes just wide of the far post!
    • 71' Southampton do just that, as Chaplow crosses from the right, but the ball eludes eveyone and Harding cannot make contact with his attempted volley.
    • 70' Hernandez thinks he has won a throw and gets in a right strop when it goes the other way... 'Attack, attack, attack!' scream the home fans.
    • 68' Schneiderlin gives the ball away and United look to break. Owen plays it through to Hernandez who sprints after the ball but Bialkowski comes out to claim it.
    • 67' Nani fakes a shot and instead backheels for Scholes, who tries to steer a shot through a defender's legs but it is blocked.
    • 66' This is a huge test for Southampton, who need to stick to their guns and keep plugging away - they have been every bit as good as the visitors so far.
    • 65' GOAL!! MICHAEL OWEN!! Two of United's worst players combine to create the equaliser! Obertan crosses from the right, the ball deflects off a defender's arm and Owen heads into the far corner!
    • 64' OWEN!! Nani crosses low from the left, Owen gets there first at the near post but he steers the ball over! He did well to get there, but having done so Owen should really have scored.
    • 63' Now Giggs goes down and wins a foul - the St Mary's crowd roar their displeasure, but it looked a free-kick from here.
    • 62' The free-kick is pinged into the box by Giggs, and Evans heads goalwards but it presents Bialkowski with an easy save.
    • 61' Nani wins a free-kick, drawing a foul from Chaplow, who reacts angrily.
    • 60' Lindegaard claims a cross and releases Nani, who goes on a snaking run, but passing does not even enter his mind and he is eventually crowded out.
    • 58' Fair enough susbsitutions, but it is a little surprising that Berbatov will not be used...
    • 57' Manchester United: Ryan Giggs and Nani come on for Darron Gibson and Anderson.
    • 56' Fergie has seen enough from the stiffs, and is preparing two more changes - Nani and Giggs to come on.
    • 55' The home fans are making a tremendous racket, and understandably so. They are on top on the scoreboard and on the pitch.
    • 53' Great run by Harding, who beats three men but the ball is on his weaker right foot and his shot is easily saved by Lindegaard.
    • 52' Great work by Chaplow to outmuscled Anderson and win the ball in midfield. Story of the game in many ways.
    • 51' Chaplow crosses from the left to Barnard, who is impeded by his own man Lambert. Southampton play it back in and O'Shea appears to put the ball out for a corner - but it is given as a goal kick!
    • 50' Guly goes down at the edge of the box, screaming, but referee Atkinson sees no foul.
    • 49' You imagine Fergie delivered the mother of all half-time rockets, and there is a little more urgency about the visitors now.
    • 48' Anderson crossesd left-footed from the right and Seaborne gets there just in time to glance it behind before Evans can nod it in.
    • 47' Honestly, it is surprising to see Owen still on the pitch. He's rubbish.
    • 46' Second half under way.
    • 46' Manchester United: Wes Brown replaces Fabio, who has picked up a knock.
    • 45+2' Owen initially does well, skipping past his man, but his cross is awful. That's half-time, and Manchester United are 45 minutes away from getting knocked out of the Cup by League One opposition for the second year in a row.
    • 45+1' You have to say Southampton deserve that. They have been the better side in the first half - and Fergie has a job on his hands.
    • 45' GOAL!!! RCHARD CHAPLOW FOR SOUTHAMPTON!! He cuts inside from the right and fair lashes it past Lindegaard into the top right corner!
    • 44' CHANCE!! Danny Butterfield crosses from the right, Smalling misjudges it completely and Guly arrives - but heads it well over!
    • 43' Harding has had a better half than most, but his 40-yard shot is optimistic to say the least. It bounces into Lindegaard's midriff. Atill, at least he's having a go...
    • 42' No dice. An attack would be nice, though. Here come Southampton. And they lose it. And they win it back. And they lose it.
    • 41' There is really nothing of any consequence happening on the pitch. At all. Cue a goal...
    • 40' The game itself has gone off the boil. In fact, it was never on the boil. It's gone from tepid to cool.
    • 39' The Southampton fans are reeling off a succession of massively foul-mouthed songs - very clearly audible on the telly. Not exactly Saturday teatime viewing, but amusing nonetheless.
    • 38' Not it's Bialkowski's turn to hit a clearance out - caught on the full by a dextrous ball boy.
    • 37' Foul in midfield by Evans, who has had a miserable season.
    • 36' Fabio unleashes a remarkable array of stepovers but his eventual cross is hopeless.
    • 34' Obertan controls, runs and lays the ball inside for Gibson, who passes up the opportunity to shoot first time and consequently his shot is partially blocked - enough to make Bialkowski's job easy.
    • 33' Fabio is crudely brought down by Richard Chaplow on the United right and this is a good opportunity from the free-kick... not with Obertan smashing it into the crowd like that.
    • 32' Chamberlain is a very purposeful runner on the ball. This time he just lays the ball off, but you can see he is a talent.
    • 31' Half an hour gone, and Southampton are on top. United have plenty on the bench (Berbarov, Nani, Giggs, Rooney) and I suspect we will see one or more of the above before too long.
    • 30' Clive Tyldesley feigns surprise as Paul Scholes misplaces a pass. We get it, Clive, he's good at passing. Pipe down.
    • 29' Crossed from the right towards Lambert... over the striker and collected by Bialkowski.
    • 27' Lambert smashes the ball goalwards again from the free-kick, but he fires just over.
    • 26' Gibson goes in a week late on Schneiderlin, and is very lucky not to pick up a yellow card for that.
    • 25' Southampton are passing through United with some ease. Not sure the three up front formation is working for the visitors.
    • 24' Chaplow sprints down the right flank and forces Fabio to put the ball out for a corner.
    • 23' The ball drops for Anderson 25 yards out, but the Brazilian opts to sidefoot low, and it is an easy save for Bialkowski.
    • 22' The corner drops to Fonte, who forces the ball goalwards and Lindegaard has to make a sharp save.
    • 21' Harding jinks past Gibson, crosses left-footed and Evans has to head behind for a corner.
    • 20' Anderson gives the ball away to Lambert who spreads a diagonal ball towards Chaplow on the right... it is a little heavy and Fabio shepherds it out for a goal kick.
    • 19' Lambert goes for goal and hits a viciously curling effort about two feet over! If that had been on target he might have had Lindegaard struggling.
    • 18' Evans commits a foul 30 yards from the United goal... this is a shooting chance. Lambert and Guly stand over it.
    • 17' Woodwork! Michael Owen crosses from the right, and it dips over Bialkowski before bouncing back into play off the far post!
    • 16' Abysmal goal kick from Lindegaard - straight out for a throw inside the United half.
    • 15' Harding thinks he has won a corner but referee Atkinson signals for a goal kick.
    • 14' Lambert volleys left-footed from the edge of the box - it is straight at Lindegaard who makes a decent save.
    • 13' Chamberlain sprints towards a crossfield ball on the left, but O'Shea nicks it off him with a hefty challenge.
    • 12' Good start from Southampton - United's players are showing the sort of rust you would expect given their lack of first-team football.
    • 11' Rickie Lambert goes for goal from the edge of the box but he is off target.
    • 10' Owen collects the ball just outside the box and drives a low shot towards the far corner... wide!
    • 8' Another offside flag is up - this time against Javier Hernandez who runs on to Darron Gibson's through ball.
    • 7' The ball is in the United net, but there is an offside flag up against the Southampton left-back Dan Harding - the replay shows it was a good decision by lineman Mike Mularkey. Spoilsport.
    • 6' Southampton win the game's first corner, and it is cleared by a combination of O'Shea and Hernandez.
    • 5' There's certainly a risk in making as many changes as Fergie - this is the same back four that got destroyed by West Ham in the Carling Cup.
    • 4' It's all in midfield early on, and Southampton won't mind an opportinity to settle into this game.
    • 3' Cross from Anderson on the United left... it's too deep. The visitors will have to work hard not to get too narrow. A big job for the full-backs O'Shea and Fabio.
    • 2' Michael Owen is playing as a deep-lying forward behind the pacy Hernandez and Obertan.
    • 1' Southampton kick off, playing from right to left. A tremendous noise around St Mary's!
    • 17:15 Javier Hernandez is on his knees, praying, as is his wont. He's had a good debut season, so I suppose you can't knock it...
    • 17:10 The teams line up in the tunnel - John O'Shea skippers United today. Jose Fonte has the armband for Southampton. Southampton wearing all-white with a red River Plater-style diagonal stripe. United in their black third strip with a blue chevron on the chest.
    • 17:05 There will be plenty of attention on Southampton's Alex Chamberlain. The 17-year-old has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United - a good performance today could pave the way for a £10m switch for the midfielder.
    • 17:00 The bad news for the Saints - Dean Hammond and Adam Lallana both miss out. They were rated as doubtful with calf and knee injuries respectively.
    • 16:55 Southampton could hand a debut to Dany N'Guessan, who has joined on loan from Leicester for the rest of the season. The winger is on the bench.
    • 16:50 What you need to know about Anders Lindegaard: 1-He's Danish, 2-He's 26, 3-He's 6' 4", 4-He cost £3.5m from Alesund, 5-Peter Schmeichel thinks he is rubbish, saying "I don't believe for a minute" he is the right man to replace Edwin van der Sar.
    • 16:45 SOUTHAMPTON: Bialkowski. Butterfield, Fonte(c), Seaborne, Harding. Guly, Chaplow, Schneiderlin, Chamberlain. Barnard, Lambert... SUBS: Davis, Richardson, Dickson, Martin, Gobern, Doble, N'Guessan.
    • 16:40 Debut for Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard: UNITED: Lindegaard; O'Shea, Smalling, Evans, Fabio; Anderson, Gibson, Scholes; Obertan, Owen, Hernandez... SUBS: Subs: Kuszczak, Brown, Bebe, Giggs, Nani, Rooney, Berbatov.
    • 16:35 It is 35 years since Southampton beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final, a result that ranks among the most famous in the Saints' history. The south coast team are now in the third tier of English football, although they are well-positioned in the fight for promotion.
