    • 90+4' Pantilimon gets his head to the corner but guides it wide, and that's the end of the game! Just in case you forgot, the win means United have gone through to the fourth round and the holders are out! What a thrilling match. What. A. Match.
    • 90+3' Kolarov fires in a solid free-kick that Lindegaard palsm away and it almost falls to the feet of Lescott before it's cleared! Now City have a corner, and here comes the huge Pantilimon!

    • 90+1' The fourth official announces a minimum of three minutes added time.
    • 90' The temporay loss of Savic has taken the wind out of City's sails now. A two-man disadvantage is proving too much even for them.
    • 88' Savic is being cleaned up after sustaining a nasty cut to his forehead in an aerial collision with Valencia. City down to nine men.
    • 87' The ball is floated back into the United box and Richards goes for a Rooney-esque overhead kick but it's a swing and a miss. Rooney nods the ball back into the arms of Lindegaard.
    • 86' Lindegaard comes off his line and makes a weak punch. There's a bout of head tennis int he box before United scramble it clear.
    • 84' Valencia makes a needless foul on Kolarov that keeps City in United territory.
    • 83' City can't make anything of the corner but they retain the bal in the United half.
    • 82' Milner hits a low ball across from the byline and it hits Jones on the arm! Big appeals for a penalty but the referee waves them away and gives a corner! To be fair, the ball kicked up off Jones's thigh and on to his arm.
    • 82' City substitution: Hargreaves replaces Nasri.
    • 81' Scholes gives the ball away again, but Jones steps in to make a key tackle.
    • 79' There is applause all around the ground as Owen Hargreaves prepares to come on. It's an old boys' reunion! Where's Carl;os Tevez when you need him?
    • 78' Patience and organisation are the watch words for City now. It's like we've gone back to last season!
    • 76' City are letting United enjoy the majority of the possession in the hope that they can hit them on the break. An equaliser no longer looks like such an outlandish prospect.
    • 74' United substitution: Anderson replaces Welbeck.
    • 73' Scholes is coming into the game much more now as he finds his touch and passing range once more. He's right in the thick of it now as United pen City in.
    • 72' Valencia lays the ball off to Scholes to strike from 25 yards... The veteran connects well but hits it right at the keeper.
    • 71' Giggs tries to drill a low ball across the box but Zabaleta slides in to block it and gets the fortunate ricochet of Giggs for a goal kick.
    • 70' Carrick loses the ball to Richards but United soon have it back. Ten-man City making a very good impression of a side with the full complement of players at the moment.
    • 68' Pretty wild tackle from De Jong, perhaps as bad as Kompany's. No card from the referee. Not even a foul.
    • 66' Ciy camps in their half again as they soak up more United pressure. They do so well and now they play more patient keep-ball. The half-time defensive reshuffle has helped them greatly.
    • 65' Aguero's 17th goal of the season has given this extraordinary match another thrilling twist.
    • 64' GOAL!! CITY 2-3 UNITED!! INCREDIBLE!! Scholes plays a sloppy pass and Milner pounces on the loose ball. The England midfielder squares for Aguero whose first shot is saved by Lindegaard but he hits home the rebound! Game on!
    • 62' Valencia skirts along the edge of the area and Kolarov clumsily knocks him over... No penalty says the referee! Looked a clear spot-kick to most with the benfit of replays!
    • 61' Aguero goes on another surging solo run forward but gets crowded out and fould Evra as he tries to win the ball back. Aguero could have squared the ball to Nasri if only he had looked across.
    • 60' Very strange to have Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and Giggs all in the ground today, and two of them are on the pitch!
    • 59' United substitution: Scholes replaces Nani.
    • 58' Rooney has another pop from distance that flies well wide. He doesn't look bothered. Perhaps he just wanted it out of play so this could happen...
    • 57' Paul Scholes is taking off his track suit and is preapring to come on!
    • 56' Since 1984, United have only been eliminated at this stage once in 26 attempts in the FA Cup: in 2009/10 vs Leeds.
    • 55' This game is really beginning to open up now. United are seeing more of the ball but City are finding their way out of their half regularly. A key stage in the match now.
    • 54' A very salient point from Reuters' main football man Mike Collett on Twitter: "I remember #MCFC once being 3-0 down at halftime & having a player sent off in an FA Cup match and winning 4-3 .. #THFC 3 City 4, Feb 2004"
    • 53' Nani lifts in a delicate ball towards Welbeck that Lescott heads away.
    • 52' Paul Scholes goes for a jog along the touchline, much to the delight of the visiting fans.
    • 51' Valencia puts in a cross that's a little behind Nani as he guides a header off target.
    • 49' Kolarov's third goal of the season has some City fans daring to dream.
    • 48' GOAL!! CITY 1-3 UNITED!! Kolarov bends a lovely free-kick over the wall that dips and swings inside the near post! For once the Serb goes for placement over power and he gets his reward!
    • 47' Richards surges forward and cuts inside. Evra hauls him down and earns a booking.
    • 46' City kick off and the second half is underway!
    • HT City substitution: Pablo Zabaleta and Stefan Savic replace David Silva and Adam Johnson.
    • 45+2' The whsitle goes for half-time, and it's an incredible scoreine. Referee Chris Foy is booed off the pitch as he walks down the tunnel.
    • 45+1' SO CLOSE FOR WELBECK!! Valencia works half a yard off Kolarov and fires a rapid ball across the face of goal that Welbeck gets a touch on but can't steer on goal!
    • 45' United are just toying with City by knocking the ball casually around the edge of the final third. The travelling fans are doing the Poznan. This is not City's finest hour.
    • 44' Aguero barges his way into the box as he tries to make something happen, but he runs into one too many United defenders.
    • 43' It has to be observed that, so far, Nasri has been very much on the periphery of this match.
    • 41' At half-time in the 6-1 at Old Trafford, City were only 1-0 up and United still had 11 men until the 47th minute. This could get ugly...
    • 40' GOAL!! CITY 0-3 UNITED!! Pantilimon saves the penalty but Rooney heads home the rebound! Thoughts are already turning to how many United can score this afternoon...
    • 39' PENALTY!! Welbeck latches on to Giggs's through ball and Kolarov brings him down! Foy points straight to the spot! No card though, Richards was covering. Rooney places the ball on the spot...
    • 38' Rooney has a pop from the edge of the City box, but it's dragged well wide of the target.
    • 36' The City fans are up in arms because they believe Nani commits a foul throw. They get it, and Nani gets a card for his protests. A small victory, mind.
    • 34' Welbeck follows up his goal with a booking for a foul on Kolarov.
    • 32' That's Welbeck's seventh goal of the season, and only his second since October 1. Once again, Pantilimon could do little about it.
    • 31' GOAL!! CITY 0-2 UNITED!! Welbeck makes it two for United with a beauty! Evra hits a low cross back from the byline that's headed for Welbeck. Lescott gets a touch that guides the ball off Aguero's head and into the air. Welbeck reacts magnificently to swivel and fire a lovely right-footed volley past Pantilimon!
    • 30' Giggs wins a free-kick on the halfway line. United beginning to find holes in the City midfield.
    • 29' Since 1984, United have only been eliminated at this stage once in 26 attempts in the FA Cup: in 2009/10 vs Leeds.
    • 27' Lovely mazy run from Aguero down the left channel and he gets into the box and shoots... Side netting!
    • 26' The consensus seems to be that Kompany is facing a four-match suspension - three for this red and one game for previous red against Wolves in October.
    • 25' Aguero shields the ball from Jones who brings him down with an unceremonious mush to the back of the leg! Again, Foy blows his whistle but keeps cards in pocket.
    • 24' Once more United are commanding as they defend a City corner. Kompany's absence means there wil be less of an aerial threat at set pieces for City as well as weakening their defence.
    • 23' Patient build-up from City before Silva skips and jinks his way tot he edge of the box with a lovely run and his strike is deflected for a corner!
    • 22' City making a good job of keeping possesion, though, and once again they are pinning United back in their own half.
    • 21' Jones makes great tracks down the right flank but then shanks his cross into the crowd. The ironic cheers from the home fans are not as bullish as they would normally be, what with their team being a goal and a man down.
    • 19' Aguero controls Pantilimon's long kick well in midfield. Giggs brings him down with a leg hooked around the Argentina striker. Foul but no card for the Welshman.
    • 18' Great feet by Johnson as he fires in a low cross but Chris Smalling guides it away with an outstretched boot.
    • 17' Five of the last seven clashes between City and United at the Etihad have ended 1-0 (twice to City, three times to United, plus one 0-0 and one 2-1).
    • 16' Jones is down injured and is receiving treatment. This should give City time to get a sub warmed up and make a change.
    • 15' The City corner comes to nothing. The Premier League leaders still look a little shell-shocked.
    • 14' Aguero has a decent effort from range and Anders Lindegaard makes a fine leap and tips the ball around the post!
    • 13' Foy has shown four red cards in nine Premier League matches so far this season. Only two officials have sent more players off in the division.
    • 12' KOMPANY OFF! More disaster for City as their captain is shown a red card! Kompany lunged in on Nani and referee Chris Foy does not hesitate! The Belgian was off the ground but he was very low, hardly the most dangerous tackle. Still off he goes.
    • 11' Rooney scored his 16th goal of the season with United's first attack of the game.
    • 10' GOAL!! CITY 0-1 UNITED!! Totally against the run of play United take the lead! Ryan Giggs sets Rooney away through the middle. The England striker plays it wide to Valencia, continues his run into the box and meets the cross with a great header that hits the top corner! Pantilimon had no chance with that one!
    • 9' Wayne Rooney tries to initiate a United counter. He squares for Phil Jones who dinks a ball down the wing for Valencia to chase, but the ball skips off the rain-covered surface and out of play.
    • 8' Evra fouls Johnson on the wing. Kolarov whips his free-kick right into Danny Welbeck's face in the wall! Wasted opportunity from a decent dead-ball chance there.
    • 7' City have not conceded a goal in any of their last five FA Cup matches.
    • 6' Aleksandar Kolarov motors down the left wing but Antonio Valencia shows just why he has been trusted to fill in at right-back recently by covering the Serb's run.
    • 5' Silva and Agueo link up for the first time to great effect. The ball has barely been out of the United half as of yet. Samir Nasri then feeds Silva, whose shot on the turn is blocked.
    • 4' Richards crosses to David Silva on the edge of the area. The playmaker his team-mate's call Merlin tries to chest the ball into Aguero's path for a strike but United clear.
    • 3' Nice play down the right involving Micah Richards and Adam Johnson before James Milner's low cross is blocked. Milner is played into the area and Rio Ferdinand clears for a throw. Bright start from City.
    • 2' This is of course the first game that City will have to deal without Yaya Toure. Their midfield lynchpin has gone off to the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast.
    • 1' Nigel de Jong sends Sergio Aguero scampering away down the right flank, but Patrice Evra does well enough to hold him up and force the play back.
    • 1' United kick off and the match is underway! What on earth is going to happen?
    • 13:58 The players are wlaking out on to the Etihad Stadium pitch now. We'll be underway shortly.
    • 13:57 Not sure it has been mentioned yet, but David Beckham is in the crowd this afternoon. Reports that he turned up with his boots and asked Fergie "any chance of a game?" are unconfirmed.
    • 13:55 The Scholes news has polarised opinion on both the tweets (@tony_mabert) and in the comments below: Kenneth says "i think scholes will help improve manchester united's midfield as there have been a lot of injuries, epic move from fergie," while, coincidentally, Ken believes that this is the "worst news for football fans apart from man u paul scholes has come out of retirement young england midfielders look and learn."
    • 13:55 Today's referee is Chris Foy. The Merseyside official last took charge of matches involving each of these teams last November. He was in the middle for City's 3-1 home win over Newcastle, and then his very next game was at Old Trafford: United's 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup.
    • 13:50 Head-to-head: City have won two of their last three meetings against United: last season's FA Cup semi-final and that infamous 6-1 at Old Trafford. If they win this tie, City will move level with United by winning four of the eight derbies in the FA Cup. In a total of 160 meetings in all competitions since their first in 1894, United have 66 wins to City's 44.
    • 13:45 Meanwhile, City boss Roberto Mancini is keen to keep this tie seperate fromt he league in his players' minds: "The FA Cup is important for us. We won it last year and want to go in the final again if it is possible. It is a difficult game. It is a derby. It is harder because they are angry after two defeats and they are usually very strong after a defeat. But it is not important for the Premier League, other than maybe physiologically."
    • 13:40 More from Fergie: "I won't be mentioning (the 6-1 at Old Trafford). We have enough experienced players in the squad to cope with a really difficult tie. I always say I would take anyone in a home draw. The advantage is with Manchester City in that respect. But it is a cup tie. It is a local derby and anything can happen in these games."
    • 13:40 Here's what Fergie said in the build-up to this game a couple of day's ago: "The injury situation has accelerated a lot of our fans into saying we will have to get someone. I would rather stick with the ones I have got than bring someone in who ends up not having a game anyway because they are not good enough." How prescient...
    • 13:40 Someone called 李民发 (how do you pronounce that?) on Twitter says: "I'm pretty sure Fergie has done a desperate move by put scholes to the squad, he needs someone like sneijder..." - I would say that he has signed someone LIKE Sneijder, just a bit older and a lot more ginger.
    • 13:35 For Manchester United Chris Smalling has recovered from tonsillitis to play at right-back is still out, with Phil Jones partnering Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence. Anders Lindegaard continues in goal. Dimitar Berbatov is left out of the squad as United look to avoid suffering a third consecutive competitive defeat against their local rivals. Manchester United team page
    • 13:30 Manchester City are without Mario Balotelli, Gareth Barry and the Toure brothers. Striker Balotelli (ankle) and midfielder Barry (suspension) are definitely forced out while defender Kolo and midfielder Yaya Toure have to report for African Nations Cup duty with Ivory Coast. Striker Edin Dzeko (knee )is out but forward Samir Nasri has recovered from illness and starts. Goalkeeper Joe Hart is rested, so in comes Costel Pantilimon. Manchester City team page
    • 12:25 Manchester City: Pantilimon; Richards, Kompany, Lescott, Kolarov; De Jong, Milner, Nasri; Johnson, Aguero, Silva. Subs: Hart, Clichy, Zabaleta, Savic, Hargreaves, Razak, Suarez /// Manchester United: Lindegaard; Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Nani; Rooney, Welbeck. Subs: De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Anderson, Park, Hernandez, Scholes. SCHOLES!
    • 12:20 What do you think of Scholes coming out of retirement? Is it another shrewd move from Fergie, or is it an act of desperation? Can the little schemer still do a job for the Red Devils, or does he risk sullying his legacy as one of the best English midfielders of all-time? share your thoughts either by posting comments below or by getting in touch with me via Twitter @tony_mabert.
    • 12:15 More on Scholes now. Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "It’s fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It’s always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It’s terrific to have him back." Full story
    • 12:10 Well, while that dust settles on that breaking news, let's consider how big this game is. It is not only a Manchester derby. It is between the top two sides in the Premier League, and the defending champions against the club with the record number of wins in the competition. So, yes, it's rather a big deal.
    • 12:05 Incredible news to kick off our coverage of this huge derby clash: Paul Scholes has come out of retirement to re-sign for United until the end of the season, and he's on the bench today! Just to repeat that - PAUL SCHOLES IS IN THE UNITED SQUAD! Unbelievable.
