    • 79' Zaha, though basically rubbish for most of the match, has at least put a fair amount of effort it. It's that which is his problem, not his skill.
    • 76' Hernandez almost toes in a cross from the right from - I think - Lingard, but it's well wide in the end.

    • 63' Hernandez is the other sub to come on.
    • 61' Lingard, Kagawa and... someone are on. Rooney, Mata and Valencia off.

    • 55' Bale gets the ball over the wall, and against the post. De Gea had it covered but that was a great strike.
    • 54' Luke Shaw concedes a free kick 35 yards out. He needs a haircut, shower and shave. Xabi Alonso is down injured.
    • 52' Not much going.
    • 51' Can any team with Tom Cleverley in win a match?
    • 49' Zaha wins a foul in midfield from Nacho, and the ball is spread left to Shaw, who can't keep the ball in play.

    • 45' Rooney takes, chips it forward to Mata's run, but he can only volley it straight forward rather than on target.
    • 44' United are bossing this, and even though it's a friendly it is totally alien after last year. Another free kick for United, 35 yards out to the left. Rooney will take.
    • 42' Zaha is on for Welbeck. Mata's free kick is cut back by Rooney, but blocked by Modric.
    • 41' Carvajal beats Young to a cross, but his header is weak and De Gea stops easily. Fletcher then wins a foul off Xabi Alonso 30 yards from goal. Welbeck is limping off.
    • 40' Carvajal is getting proper moody here. First he throws the ball to the ground when he doesn't a throw in call, then he barges into Michael Keane in the United box.
    • 37' GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Real Madrid. Young scores. Young cuts onto his right foot, sends in a cross for Rooney, and it just misses the striker's head and sneaks in at the corner past De Gea, who was rooted, waiting for the header.

    • 26' Penalty for Real Madrid, and a stupid challenge from Michael Keane. Bale's turn of pace makes Keane panic and drag him down as he runs into the box. How that's a better idea that watching what might happen, I don't know.
    • 25' It's blocked at the near post and United try to break down the left, but then decide to turn back to goal and keep the ball, and thei calm.
    • 24' Keane is rushed into a tackle on Bale and ends up putting the ball out for a corner on the left wing. Modric takes.
    • 22' Mata almost backheels the ball over a defender's head. Yep. Good old David Moyes, eh.
    • 21' GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Real Madrid. Young scores. Young! Fletcher and Rooney play a one-two with a Rooney backheel, he plays the ball to Welbeck on the left, who stabs the ball wide for Welbeck, in space, who drills a shot low into the near corner.

    • 13' While the game ambles on, why not also have a read of Tom Adams' account of the Arsenal-Benfica friendly.
    • 12' No clear chances for either side yet.
    • 10' Fletcher aims a long ball towards Rooney but Pepe is there to cut it out, and Real now take their time on the ball. Keane comes across to tackle Bale.
    • 9' Welbeck has space on the left, so he runs straight into a defender. Brainless stuff.
    • 8' United have started the brighter of the two sides, and are looking calm in possession. Imagine what they'd look like if Moyes was still there.
    • 7' Mata spreads the ball right to Valencia, whose cross is met by Rooney and Welbeck, who get in each other's way. Moments later, a cross from the left earns United a corner for Rooney. His corner is cleared at the near post.
    • 6' Herrera loses the ball to Modric, so he sprints after the Croatian and drags him to the ground in midfield.
    • 4' Rooney and Welbeck swap passess on the left, and Rooney is dispossessed. It'll be interesting to see if this is still what Rooney is, even under Van Gaal: a liability.
    • 3' Mata finds Rooney who tries to play Welbeck in, but he can't quite get ahead of Ramos who collects the ball.
    • 2' Real Madrid dominate the early moments in terms of possession. But you'd expect that - they have much better players.
    • 1' The match is underway. What a time to be alive.

    • 20:25 For Real Madrid, Christian's brother, Gareth starts, but Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't. He is still managing his return from the World Cup. We may not see him at all today, but almost certainly it won't be until the second half if we do.
