    • 90+3' The whistle blows, and England have come from behind to beat the side that eliminated them from Euro 2012 two months ago courtesy of Jermain Defoe's cracking winner.
    • 90+2' This will be England's first over Italy since a 2-0 victory at Le Tournoi in 1997. Ian Wright and Paul Scholes scored the goals that day in Nantes.
    • 90' Three minutes of added time are signalled. Three minutes of nerves for several Premier League managers.
    • 89' Great build-up in midfield before Milner is released down the right. His turns to leave Peluso on his backside and cuts the ball back for Defoe from the byline, but it's intercepted just in time at the expense of a corner!
    • 87' Finally there is a bit of noise inside the half-full ground as the England fans who made the journey feel comfortable enough to start celebrating an England win.
    • 85' Muted appeals for handball after Abate's shot canons off Lescott's arm, but there was little the England defender could do about that.
    • 83' Defoe really fancies it now, and he has a pop from the edge of the 'D' but the low left-footed effort is wide.
    • 81' Italy substitution: Diego Fabbrini comes on for Destro.
    • 80' GOAL!! England clear Verratti's corner and Bertrand releases Defoe on the break. The striker works half a yard from Abate on the corner of the area and fires a strike into the far corner! Sirigu got a hand to it but it was too strong to keep out.
    • 79' Poli's cross is laid off inside the area and Verratti's strike is tipped over the bar by Ruddy! The teenager could have picked his spot better but it was a decent save.
    • 78' England substitution: Ryan Bertrand replaces Baines.
    • 77' Peluso gets forward down the right before playing back to Verratti. The young PSG recruit has not seen much of the ball as yet.
    • 74' Milner gets a boot to the face as he runs right into Peluso's bicycle kick clearance. He goes to ground, but his expression is unchanged. Granite.
    • 72' Milner swings in an excellent free-kick that Peluso almost guides into his own net, only for Sirigu to palm it away with a great reaction save! Lescott is on hand at the far post but can only guide the rebound onto the post!
    • 70' Michael Carrick is now the England captain.
    • 69' England substitution: Jake Livermore replaces Lampard.
    • 69' Italy substitution: Andrea Poli replaces Aquilani.
    • 68' Aquilani has a speculative shot from range fly miles wide. He wants a corner but the referee is not buying it.
    • 67' Cahill volleys the corner home fromt he penalty spot, put the whistle had already gone for Lescott tugging the shirt of his marker. Cahill looks suitably aggrieved!
    • 66' Milner causing plenty of problems on the right now and his low cross wins a corner.
    • 65' Milner plays Johnson down the right touchline. The ball is squared into the run of Walker, whose ball into the box deflects off the legs of a retreating defender.
    • 64' Cahill is back on the field now after getting patched up.
    • 63' Cahill is given a nose bleed after an aerial tudssle with Destro, who does look a handful.
    • 62' England substitutions: Joleon Lescott and James Milner replace Jagielka and Young.
    • 61' England come again and Lampard sets up Young for the shot from distance... Fired way over the bar.
    • 60' Italy defend England;s first corner at the expense of a second. This time Cahill can't guide his header on target and it pings off the unsuspecting Defoe, whose eventual shot on the turn is blocked.
    • 58' Italy substitutions: Marco Verratti and Manolo Gabbiadini replace El Shaarawy and Diamanti.
    • 57' Destro latches onto a lovely pass down the channel, turns inside Walker but just has the ball taken off his toe! Aquilani tries to feed the run of Abate but the pass is just past the full-back. The passage of play ends with Destro firing into the side-netting.
    • 54' Diamanti's delivery falls to Destro, who's shot on the turn is parried well at the near post by Ruddy! The follow-up effort is blocked and England clear.
    • 53' Italy take their cue to break. El Shaarawyplays a crossfield ball that just doesn't sit well enough for Diamanti, but he wins a free-kick off the back-tracking Walker.
    • 52' Young pops the ball square to Johnson near the edge of the box but the Man City man's touch is poor.
    • 51' De Rossi really starting to exert his influence now as Italy start the second half on top. He's head and shoulders above anyone else on this pitch.
    • 50' Destro and Jagielka tangle and both hit the deck as they chase a ball into the England box. The referee lets play continue. Quite right true.
    • 48' Defoe chases De Rossi back into the England half and makes a classic striker's tackle. Still, it halts the Italian captain's progress, so it did it's job. Italy take the free-kick short and keep possession.
    • 46' The second half is underway!
    • HT Italy substitution: Federico Peluso replaces Balzaretti.
    • HT England substitution: John Ruddy and Jermain Defoe replace Butland and Carroll.
    • 45' Half-time is called in Berne, and a 1-1 draw is fair at the break. Let me know your half-time thoughts via Twitter @tony_mabert. No RvP tweets though
    • 43' Abate exchanges a great one-two with Diamanti and chases after the dinked return pass into the area. The ball sits up invitingly for the AC Milan player to strike, but he can only fire it across the face of goal. Nice football from the Azzurri.
    • 41' Lampard lines up a free-kick from 25 yards, left of centre... He bends it over the wall and it skims the roof of the net! Decent effort, but Sirigu wasn't tested.
    • 39' Diamanti digs out a clever, curling ball for Destro but Butland does very well to stretch a leg and divert the ball away from danger. Smart bit of goalkeeping, that.
    • 37' Carrick and Cleverley combine to find Carroll int he area with his back to goal, but the big striker is closely marked and can;t bring the ball under control.
    • 35' Lampard pings the ball into Baines's run down the left. The full-back knocks it back to Cleverley, who again tees Lamaprd up for a long-range strike that is blocked.
    • 31' Cleverley heavily involved in the build-up and he tees up Lampard for a strike from range... Beaten away two-fisted by Sirigu!
    • 29' Jagielka's first international goal from 13 caps has pulled England level here. Just as Italy scored when they appeared to be on the back foot, now England have done the same.
    • 28' GOAL!! Great diving header from Jagielka which is guided into the far corner giving Sirigu no chance!
    • 27' More good footwork down the right from Johnson who plays down the channel to Walker. The Spurs right-back skips over Ogbonna's sliding challenge and wins a corner.
    • 26' Diamanti works himself into a vexed state as he screams at his team-mates to be ready for his corner. When it comes in, Butland catches with ease at the near post.
    • 24' Ashley Young has not been too involved so far, but he twists and turns enough to win a corner off Abate. Italy clear and El Shaarawy skips away down the wing only for the ball to run out of play.
    • 23' Destro beats the offside trap and takes a floated ball over the top on his chest. Kyle Walker's pace sees him catch up with the Roma striker and do enough to put him off his shot, which is blazed high and wide of the near post.
    • 21' Adam Johnson works half a yard of space inside the Italy area but he drags his low shot and Sirigu gathers comfortably.
    • 20' The ball is squared to Aquilani who tries his luck from 25 yards out but Phil Jagielka makes the block.
    • 18' Good build-up play from Italy with Stephan El Shaarawy involved. The ball comes in from Nocerino for Destro but Butland is able to gather it.
    • 16' Daniele De Rossi's 12th international goal has given Italy the lead after England had marginally had the better of the first 15 minutes.
    • 15' GOAL!! De Rossi gets ahead of Michael Carrick at the near post and guides a well-judged glancing header over Butland and in!
    • 14' Destro tries the quick give-and-go with Alberto Aquilani put his pass is too heavy. Diamanti then delivers a free-kick which Bultand palms away for a corner after it took a deflection.
    • 13' Lampard sends in a free-kick from deep on the left wing but it curls too closely to PSG keeper Sirigu who catches comfortably.
    • 12' Cahill tries to ping a long diagonal ball to Carroll but it flies out of play. England have had plenty of the ball so far.
    • 11' This time Carroll really attacks the corner. He loses Davide Astori with ease but can't keep his header down! First thing you could call a chance of the game.
    • 10' Antonio Nocerino has to react where his team-mates are napping to divert another Baines cross behind.
    • 9' Carroll nods Lampard's croner down into the area but Daniele De Rossi clears the immediate danger.
    • 8' Baines's cross is blocked for a corner by Abate. England's first set piece.
    • 7' Play going from end to end at a fair pace in these early stages, but no chances to speak of as yet.
    • 5' Frank Lampard, wearing the captain's armband tonight, exchanges passes with Leighton Baines as England move forward but his pass down the channel is intercepted.
    • 4' At the age of 19 years and 158 days Jack Butland becomes England's youngest ever goalkeeper tonight.
    • 3' Tom Cleverley surges forward and tries to thread a pass through for Andy Carroll. Ignazio Abate fails to clear and goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has to hack the ball out for a throw under pressure.
    • 2' Mattia Destro wins an early corner for Italy. Alessandro Diamanti whips it in and Angelo Ogbonna's glanced header is wide of the far post.
    • 1' Italy get this show on the road!
    • 19:55 With both anthems half-heartedly muttered by the players and the 15,000-strong crowd in Benre, we are getting ready for kick-off. You can share your thoughts during the via Twitter @tony_mabert. Isn't Italy's national anthem good?
    • 19:50 The teams are walking out onto the field now, accompanied by that official FIFA music that is more is a little reminiscent of the Police Academy theme tune. Now for the anthems...
    • 19:45 This is England's only match before they kick-off their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign with a trip to Group H rivals Moldova on September 7. On the same night, Italy will travel to Bulgaria for their opening Group B clash. Don't you just love international football? World Cup qualifiying groups
    • 19:40 Still plenty of empty seats in the Wankdorf Stadium with just 20 minutes to kick-off. Perhaps, given the brilliantly efficient Swiss public transport system, everyone will flood in with five minutes to go.
    • 19:35 Cesare Prandelli (Italy): "I have asked those who will play against England to dive headlong into the Azzurri spirit and try to prove they’re ready, even if I am practically sure they are. We must settle into the attitude needed for the World Cup qualifiers. If after the game I realise that at least two or three lads are ready, then I can consider myself satisfied.”
    • 19:35 Roy Hodgson (England): "This represents an ideal opportunity to get back some of the guys who dropped out of the Euros with injury and also to look at some of the younger players I have in mind."
    • 19:30 But, obviously you don't care about that right now, not when what is likely to be the last ever round of August friendly matches is upon us.
    • 19:25 BREAKING NEWS: Arsenal have announced that terms have been agreed over the sale of Robin van Persie to Manchester United! More details to follow...
    • 19:20 Many talking points arise from this England line-up. Is it good to have Michael Carrick back in the England? Is it worth having Frank Lamaprd in the team when he will turn 36 during the next World Cup? Just what is the obsession with Jack Butland? Share your pre-match thoughts with me via Twitter @tony_mabert. Get in touch!
    • 19:15 What do you mean you are having trouble caring about this match? Remember, this fixture pits the runners-up of Euro 2012, Italy, against England, THE THIRD BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD. No sniggering at the back, please. England up to third in FIFA rankings
    • 19:10 Italy have named an experimental line-up that sees Ignazio Abate, Angelo Ogbonna, Alberto Aquilani, Mattia Destro and Stephan El Shaarawy all start the match. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti is expected to make his senior debut in the second half. Daniele De Rossi is your token superstar for this one. Balotelli out, Fabbrini in
    • 19:10 England are without Arsenal winger Theo Walcott due to a bruised thigh. Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain withdrew from the England squad on Monday, complaining of an ankle injury. He was replaced by Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott as England prepare to face the team that knocked them out of the Euro 2012 quarter-finals on penalties. City goalkeeper Joe Hart and Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge have also withdrawn due to injury. Walcott withdraws from England squad
    • 19:10 Theo Walcott, Mario Balotelli, Joe Hart, Andrea Pirlo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain... these are just some of the exciting star names who will not be in action tonight! What we do have, however, is an intriguing rematch of a European Championship quarter-final won by the Azzurri on penalties just 52 days ago, with both sides set to field young, experimental sides ahead of their World Cup qualifying campaigns kicking off next month.

  3. Most are commenting ont he fact that this was a rubbish italian team. For one I dont think they were that bad, some slick passing from them actually got behind the England defence the same way the italian team at the euros did. The only difference was that Pirlo wasn't playing, other than that they played the same way. On another note, it was a pleasure seeing Englands midfield just like TGB use the ball intelligently, unlike bombing it forward and defending like they did at the euros. Thie England team yesterday seen to be full of players that actually want to play alongside each other. There didn't seem to be much egos, or much of nonsense that some of the "senior" players usually bring with them. To me that was the bigger pleasure not just the win. I think Roy Hodgson should take a look at that and not make the same mistakes the last few mangers made by picking the "Brand name" players.

  4. What a difference it make when none of the Liverpool payers are on the pitch. Henderson and Kelly could have wreck all the effort of the younger team. Lampard and Carrick were quitely effective old heads. Kyle Walker was equally effective and Carrol was no more than a nuisance in first half. When put through by Cleverly in first half, can't bring the ball under control and lost the chance.

From wunna, on Thu 16 Aug 8:37
  5. England wasn't the home team??? This match should have originally been played in Italy. Which made them the home team.

  13. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

Team GB would of hammered both, boring game and lots of empty seats

From Mark, on Wed 15 Aug 21:58
  14. Ashley Young is a brilliant player. Intelligent passing, positioning and use of the ball - exactly the kind of game intelligence and trickery that England desperately need. Unfortunately a lot of our small minded fans only understand "blood and thunder" and "passion" which has got us nowhere in almost 50 years! We need players with nous not just big strong blokes who can run really fast

From daplad, on Wed 15 Aug 21:56
  15. Well done England and Roy Hodgson. I feel we are moving in the right direction at last, but i would feel much happier if he dropped J.Terry all together and F.Lampard. Both have been good servants for England but we now need to invest in our young players and develop them ready for the World cup and beyond. We have some good young exciting players developing and we must not waste this opportunity !!!!! Malc

  16. Good game, enjoyed it regardless of the score. But I wish that band would learn some new tunes.

  17. According to the FIFA Rankings Prognosis, England will drop from 1294 points to 1274 points with a 2-1 win over Italy. I do not understand the FIFA rankings...
