    Espanyol v Valencia: LIVE

Valencia look to cement their grip on Spain's third automatic Champions League qualification slot when they play at Espanyol. More

  • Live Commentary

    • 90+2' All over! 4-0 to Espanyol in the end and thoroughly deserving. Two goals either side of the break made this a comfortable win for the hosts. Valencia, meanwhile, will want to forget this result quickly as there appeared nothing positive to take from it unfortunately.
    • 90+1' How did Jose Baena not score?! That should have been five. Uche with a clever through ball to Baena who was in all sorts of space inside the area but could only direct his strike wide.
    • 90' There will be an extra two minutes of injury time.
    • 88' Clumsy barge on Lopez by a frustrated Aduriz. Another booking there.
    • 86' Throw-in to Valencia as this game appears to have run it's full course.
    • 85' Mauricio Pochettino barking orders on the touchline now. But you're team are 4-0 up Pochettino?
    • 84' The win would see Espanyol move two places up to eight and with a real prospect of qualifying for Europe.
    • 83' A bit of possession play from Espanyol as they seek to run the clock down.
    • 82' The away fans, who have been in full voice this morning, must want this game to end.
    • 81' ESPANYOL: Serigo Garcia, who has worked his socks off, goes off to a round of applause and on comes Rui Fonte.
    • 80' Espanyol have treated their fass today to a marvellous performance. Well done.
    • 79' 4-0! Game over. Eye of the needle pass from Sanchez picks out Uche who beats the offside trap before coolly slotting the ball past Guaita. Lovely goal.
    • 78' The home side bomb forward but the move comes to a hault swiftly.
    • 77' And the hosts take their time over the free kick as they aim to see this win through.
    • 76' Free kick Espanyol. Feghouli brings down Vazquez on the half way line.
    • 75' Garcia again from distance. But I'm not sure if that's a shot or cross as it goes behind for a goal kick to Valencia.
    • 74' Emery looks a forlorn figure on the bench. He and the fans will want to forget this result if the end up losing this which seems more than likely.
    • 73' This game is in danger of boiling over. Not sure these yellow cards are doing anything but turning the heat up even more!
    • 72' Victor Sanchez feels left out and, after a clumsy challenge, also receives a booking.
    • 71' And Mathieu joins Costa in the book. As does Baena who had a moment of handbags with Mathieu.
    • 70' Tino Costa goes in late on Vazquez and is rightfully booked.
    • 69' Good save! Guaita beats out a stinging free kick from Joan Verdu.
    • 68' Surely that's a penalty to Espanyol?! Vazquez skips past Canales who appears to trip the midfielder inside the box.
    • 67' Barragan tries to play his way out of danger at the back but can only clear for a corner to Espanyol. You'd think the visitors had learned their lesson.
    • 66' Terrible delivery from Tino Costa. This game is slowly running away from Valencia.
    • 66' Corner Valencia after Lopez nodded the ball out at the back post.
    • 65' VALENCIA SUB: Sergio Canales on for Jonas.
    • 64' And what's happened to Ricardo Costa? Cool, calm and clever in the opening half hour of this match; and now, well, along with his defence is looking shaky to say the least.
    • 63' The home crowd are really enjoying this now - and who can blame them?
    • 62' ESPANYOL SUB: Victor Sanchez comes on in place of Cristian Gomez.
    • 61' Garcia really wants to add his name to the scoresheet and judging by the way Valencia have been defending, it may well happen soon.
    • 60' Garcia is everywhere! First he tries to beat one too many in the box before almost getting on the end of a through ball.
    • 59' Garcia goes down just outside the Valencia penalty area but the referee ways play on.
    • 58' 3-0! What was Guaita thinking?! The goalkeeper decided to pass the ball out to Mehmet Topai rather than clear it, and the defender was instantly caught in possession by Garcia who then teed up substitute Vazquez who tucked in from close range.
    • 56' Emery is still gesticulating what seems a host of orders to his team from the touchline, but they all look the more confused.
    • 55' ESPANYOL SUB: Vladimir Weiss goes off for Alvaro Vazquez.
    • 53' Poor corner by Weiss. Back with Valencia.
    • 52' Corner Espanyol. Garcia cuts inside before seeing his effort deflect off a Valencia player wide for a corner.
    • 51' Alvarez to the rescue! Mathieu was clean through there but the captain was quick off his line to blast the ball away from danger.
    • 50' Valencia look to have their tails up and are putting real pressure on the hosts.
    • 49' One of the subs, Feghouli attacks the right-hand side with real gusto but Didac does well to get goal side and marshal the ball out for a goal kick.
    • 48' So, Emery has indeed rung the changes for Valencia for the second half. Let's see if they have the desired effect.
    • 47' VALENCIA SUB: Sofiane Feghouli replaces Daniel Parejo.
    • 46' VALENCIA SUB: Pablo Hernandez makes way for Aritz Aduriz.
    • 46' We're back and the second half has just started.
    • 45+1' And that's an end to the first half, which I'm sure Mauricio Pochettino is delighted with and Unai Emery is apoplectic with. So it's 2-0 to the hosts. Valencia must do better in the second half if they want to get something from this match.
    • 45' There will be one minute of injury time.
    • 44' Gomez beats three men, before losing possession. However, up pops Javi Lopez whose strike from distance arrows high and wide of the 'keeper's right-hand corner.
    • 43' Alba and Mathieu try to create an opening down the left only the move breaks down all too easily and it's back with the hosts.
    • 42' Valencia being pressed back into their own half, which Espanyol have done rather well all half. Costa and Rami are looking a little uncomfortable with that.
    • 41' Costa goes long, but Alba just strayed offside when the ball was played.
    • 40' No surprise to see a number of Valencia subd warming up already. Emery will have his work cut out at the break.
    • 39' But the visitors need to start delivery the ball a lot better than that if they want to get something from this game. Corner is easily dealt with by the hosts who regain the ball.
    • 38' Mathieu appears to be Valencia's best hope of getting a goal back. The Frenchman wins another corner after a nice run off his marker.
    • 37' Great wing play from Weiss, who made Costa - a super defender - look average.
    • 36' But they almost do! Weiss twists and turns Costa inside the box before flashing a cross-cum-shot across the face of goal which Sergio Garcia almost tucks in. So close!
    • 35' Despite having more possession, the visitors look disjointed at the moment. They cannot afford to concede again before half time....
    • 34' Pablo Hernandez shoots from distance...but that's not testing Alvarez. Goal kick Espanyol.
    • 33' And the defender receives a yellow card for his troubles, which he is none too happy about.
    • 32' Didac gives away a clumsy foul on Daniel Parejo, who was heading nowhere.
    • 31' Valencia win a corner, but that is very poor as Espanyol counter attack looking for a third.
    • 30' WOW! 2-0 Espanyol! Joan Verdu hits an absolute screamer on the edge of the Valencia area which flies into the top right-hand corner of Guaita's net. Fabulous goal.
    • 28' Valencia look shellshocked. They need to calm things down as they give the ball away again.
    • 27' Valencia almost hit back straightaway, but Mathieu's cross is well held by Critian Alvarez in goal.
    • 26' That was a fine finish from Gomez, who unmarked, wanted it more than any Valencia defender in the box. Real hunger there from the midfielder.
    • 25' There's the opener! Cristian Gomes with his first of the season for Espanyol. Sergio Garcia skips past a late lunge from Mehmet Topal before picking out the galloping Gomez who rifles the ball past Vincente Guaita.
    • 24' The away team wanting to calm proceedings down, straying the ball at the back to ease a bit of pressure off.
    • 23' More pressure from the home side, corner kick this time. But it's Mathieu who heads clear. Valencia look too strong for Espanyol aerially.
    • 22' What a clearance! Great defending from Ricardo Costa to clear the delivery away from danger.
    • 21' Free kick Espanyol for another hand ball. Hernandez is booked and this looks promising for the home side.
    • 19' Superb move by the hosts but the pass to free Garcia Cristian Gomez in plenty of space inside the Valencia box is flagged for offside.
    • 18' Great defending from the Valencia back four. Espanyol finding it tough to create an opening.
    • 17' Unai Emery is shouting from the bench for more urgency in his team's play. While Pochettino looks calm.
    • 16' Alba needs to be careful. Already on a booking, the 23-year-old lashes out at Moreno who he felt had felled him.
    • 15' An Alba header - causing little danger - into the box sends the Espanyol defence into panic mode. The ball is eventually whacked clear.
    • 14' The visitors are beginning to take control of the midfield battle as they win possession back.
    • 13' Antonio Barragan wastes a chance to deliver a decent ball into the Espanyol penalty area, only his cross is wayward to say the least and goes out for a goal kick.
    • 12' Mathieu again finds space down the left but his cross is blocked away for a throw-in by Javi Lopez.
    • 11' The home side's pressing in their own half has been admirable so far, with the team eager to win the ball back as quickly as possible.
    • 10' Silly foul from Jonas on Hector Moreno on the halfway line. Free kick Espanyol.
    • 9' That was close! Jordi Alba almost sent Jonas clean through, but the assistant rightfully raised his flag for offside.
    • 8' Delivery is comfortably cleared by Mathieu and Valencia can start to build an attack of their own.
    • 7' Alba, a little harsh it seems, is getting booked for that.
    • 6' Javi Lopez gallops down the wing, sends a cross in which is blocked by a trailing arm from Jordi Alba just outside the box.
    • 5' Already there's a lot of congestion in the middle of the park. This game hasn't got going yet.
    • 4' Great move by Valencia down Espanyol's right-hand side, however, Jeremy Matheiu over hits his cross and the hosts regain possession.
    • 3' Valencia dictating the play early on, but Espanyol are, so far, holding firm.
    • 2' It’s a glorious sunny morning here in Barcelona as both teams go in search of the three points to help gain European qualification for next season.
    • 1' And we're off and underway in the first half.
    • 10:59 The two teams walk onto what is a glorious surface at Estadio Cornellá-El Prat.
    • 10:55 TEAMS ARE IN! Espanyol: Cristian Álvarez, Rodriguez, Baena, Sergio García, Verdú, Uche, Moreno, Javi López, Weiss, Dídac, Cristian Gómez…subs: Casilla, Romaric, Sanchez, Rui Fonte, Amat, Vasquez, Pandiani. /// Valencia: Guaita, Barragan, Rami, R. Costa, Mathieu, Topal, Parejo, Pablo, Tino, J. Alba, Jonas…subs: Diego Alves, Maduro, Ruiz, Albelda, Feghouli, Canales, Aduriz.
    • 10:50 Unai Emery: "We are going into these games with the idea of winning. The objective must be to win the three games that remain. We need to be properly prepared for these three matches. I'm not afraid they will relax, I'm confident. As a coach I have faith in the people we work with, in the people who are going to play."
    • 10:45 Speaking yesterday, Mauricio Pochettino made it clear that a win today is imperative if Espanyol have any chance of grabbing a Europa League place for next season: "To get into Europe it's key to win tomorrow and beat Sevilla at home in the last game, because now we don't depend on ourselves and we have to get nine points. We must be alert and do our homework in case someone fails."
    • 10:40 This stat won’t fill the home fans with too much confidence going into today’s fixture with Valencia. Espanyol have picked up a measly 14 points in their last 16 games, which is the third worst record in La Liga.
    • 10:35 Match odds: Espanyol 7/4, Draw 12/5, Valencia 6/4.
    • 10:30 Good morning and welcome to Eurosport’s LIVE text commentary as RCD Espanyol host Valencia at Estadio Cornellá-El Prat in La Liga.
