    • 36' Lucas picks up a booking for a rash late challenge on Jones. Liverpool boss Rodgers far from happy about that decision.
    • 35' Giggs with a chip, but no real direction on the delivery as it ends up safely in the arms of Mignolet.
    • 34' Skrtel with a fairly wild tackle on Nani as he raced back. Free-kick to the home side now.
    • 33' Giggs penalised for a late one on Sturridge. United forced to defend another free-kick situation, but Gerrard's delivery is not up to the mark as United break.
    • 32' Suarez with the corner, but all too easy for De Gea to come off his line and collect the cross.
    • 31' Another ball fired into the heart of the United box, but Smalling is again the man in the right place to nudge the cross over his bar.
    • 30' Smalling does well again to cut out the Henderson ball with Sturridge just behind him. Corner to the visiting side.

    • 26' Jones with a late challenge on Suarez. Liverpool continue to look to build from deep.
    • 25' Suarez ends up driving the ball across the face of goal seconds later. Decent idea, but no chance of anybody connecting with that as it flies behind the United goal.
    • 24' Some more decent attacking play involving Sturridge to earn a corner. Smalling heads behind his goal for another corner that Gerrard can throw in.
    • 23' Gerrard slides the ball out wide to Enrique, but all too easy for De Gea to grasp that high cross out of the air.
    • 22' Manchester United and Liverpool have met four times before in the League Cup with Liverpool winning the 1983 and 2003 finals. As well as a fourth-round home tie in 1985. United won a third-round game at Old Trafford in 1991.
    • 21' Lucas with a lovely pass into the path of Sturrige on the run. His shot blocked by Smalling. Liverpool looking a lot better here on the ball.

    • 18' Game speeding from end to end as Nani drives the cross into the arms of Mignolet. Rafael nowhere to be seen as Enrique galloped into the visiting area.
    • 17' Moses opts for a cutback to Suarez in the United box, but his shot is blocked. Gerrard looked to be the better option to receive the pass.
    • 16' Sakho coming across to make sure Rafael can't inflict any damage from out wide. United with over 60 percent of possession in these opening exchanges.
    • 15' Another United corner sees Mignolet come to collect, but Jones is diligent in racing back to help cut out the danger. Liverpool looking to break at speed and with plenty of bodies.
    • 14' Moses and Sturridge try to play some cute little triangles, but the ball is just behind the feet of Suarez as the move breaks down.
    • 13' Nani fails to beat the first man with the corner which is a bit annoying for all concerned. Especially the United defenders who came up for the prospective header.
    • 12' Rafael with a decent ball into the heart of the Liverpool box, but Skrtel reads that cross superbly well to clear the danger.
    • 11' Kolo Toure can't quite land on the end of the corner as United clear the danger before heading to the visiting end of the pitch.
    • 10' Suarez to Enrique, but the chip to the back post is headed past his own post by Buttner with Sturridge lurking.
    • 9' Kagawa takes up a decent position out wide, but the cross flies out of play with Mignolet pedalling back in case the ball dropped under the bar.
    • 8' Kagawa showing some optimism with a run to around 22 yards of the visting goal, but the shot lacks any bite as Mignolet dives to his right to make a comfortable enough stop.
    • 7' Henderson just failing to pick out the run of Suarez as Smalling again reads the threat with some ease to make sure the through ball can't cause any damage.
    • 6' Kagawa with a late challenge on Moses as Liverpool are allowed some time to take the heat off their defence for a few moments.
    • 5' Enrique forced to clear the danger before Rooney sees a shot deflect over seconds later. United on the offensive here early on.

    • 2' Smalling having to look lively early on to nod the ball back to De Gea in the United goal under pressure from Suarez. Both teams flying into the challenges out there.
    • 1' Liverpool - eight times winners of this tournament - get the action off and running.
    • 19:40 Teams on their way out. A cracking atmosphere inside Old Trafford for this one. Could be a classic evening between two strong sides out there.
    • 19:35 Here is a quick rundown as we look at seven ways Luis Suarez could embarrass himself this evening. Again.

    • 19:25 Full teams and substitutes: Manchester United: De Gea; Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Büttner; Nani, Jones, Giggs, Kagawa; Rooney, Hernandez...subs: Anderson, Carrick, Welbeck, Fabio, Zaha, Amos, Januzaj////Liverpool: Mignolet; Toure, Sakho, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson, Lucas, Gerrard, Moses; Suarez, Sturridge...subs: Jones, Alberto, Aspas, Sterling, Ibe, Kelly, Wisdom.
    • 19:25 Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool): "It has been a really difficult time for (Suarez) not playing games. How he has prepared himself over the last number of weeks has been fantastic. He's really champing at the bit to help the team. Everyone knows the depth of his quality and his attitude. Once he gets back on the field again he will show what he has shown since he's been here."
    • 19:20 David Moyes (Manchester United): "If ever there was a group of players I would expect (a reaction from after a defeat) it is the Manchester United players. They react and that is what they will do. Every manager has bad days and bad results. I am no different.”
    • 19:15 Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has no doubts striker Luis Suarez is ready for action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Centre-back Daniel Agger is not risked as he struggles with a side strain which forced him off in Saturday's defeat to Southampton. Jose Enrique comes in for Agger with Mamadou Sakho expected to fill in for Agger at the heart of the visiting defence. Sturridge and Suarez are set to combine up front for Liverpool.
    • 19:10 Robin van Persie misses out after he failed to recover from the groin injury that kept him out of Sunday's 4-1 Premier League defeat at Manchester City. Manager David Moyes makes eight changes with Javier Hernandez, Jonny Evans and Shinji Kagawa starting the match. Ryan Giggs is also in from the outset as United aim to rebuild morale after their thumping defeat by local rivals City. Patrice Evra, infamously racially abused by Suarez in 2011, is not in the United squad.

Can't see Liverpool finishing ahead of United, City, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea or Everton in the league this season so it looks like the F.A. Cup is their only route to Europe next season, it's only September and already Liverpool's season hangs by a thread. LOVE IT! Yak! yak! yak!

  10. I am delighted that he decides to use smalling and Evans! Vidic and rio are too slow now! Sure Evans and smalling will make mistakes now and then, but all of that will slowly disappear little by little with more games! United's midfield looked more stronger with jones instead of Carrick! And more quicker and ideas with kagawa rather then young. Carrick, young can be backups not first teams. Kagawa, junazaj, jones should have some say in midfield

From Clement L, on Thu 26 Sep 2:18
  11. It was nice to see Rafael back although Nani's game is not quick enough for the team to benefit from Raphaels speed up the wing, Jones was strong, Evans looked quicker than Rio and Vid in his first game, superb, Kagawa, Henandez, Rooney all very good, thought Zaha should have got a sniff under his belt. Much better but a lot to do, John.

  15. Impressed by Liverpool performance despite the unlucky break that led to the goal. If they had played like this on Saturday, they would be still be unbeaten in the league. Great ball possession, numerous chances etc. What can we say on "bad boy" Suarez, despite being real sharp, he was still a thorn on the entire Man u defense. Focus on the league and the wins will keep coming. You will never walk alone.

  16. No comment except to say that we could not beat a second string United team even with our full strength. Are we really going forward? Two loses in a matter of 4 days is hardly any sign of progress. If we could not beat United, could we not at least draw them and bring them back to Anfield to have the job finished. That to me is the measure of a team that is making real and genuine progress.
