    • 55' Carew is penalised for hauling down Song as he fights for the ball. Villa are buoyant now.
    • 54' Well well, we've been here before, haven't we? Once again Arsenal are caught by a bright start from their opponents right after the break. Can the Gunners avoid the jitters?
    • 53' That's Clark's first ever senior goal for Villa, on his ninth appearance for the club.

    • 29' Alex Song twists and turns at the byline and wins another corner off Collins. Friedel punches it away and Villa clear to the halfway line.

    • 23' Arshavin plays short for Rosicky, who squares across the edge of the box for Nasri to strike, but his effort doesn't make it through the crowded area.
    • 22' Excellent possession play from Arsenal, about 20 passes go through most of the team before They win a corner.

    • 16' Arshavin almost weaves his way into the box, but is crowded out by claret-and-blue shirts.
    • 15' Samir Nasri was feeling his groin duing the warm-up, but he shows no signs of struggling as his persistence down the right pins Villa back.
    • 14' Chamakh flicks a header into Rosicky's path, but the Czech can only toe-poke an effort right at Friedel. That was Arsenal's fifth attempt on goal. Villa yet to test Lukasz Fabianski.
    • 13' Pires waddles forward down the left wing, but the offside flag was already up against Carew. You'd recognise that unique gait from a mile away!
    • 12' Villa youngsters Ciaran Clark and Barry Bannan are seeing a bit more of the ball now. Two very promising youngsters. Another, Marc Albrighton, is out for a few weeks after suffering appendicitis.
    • 11' The ball is kicked out of play so Laurent Koscielny can receive treatment. The French defender has been given a bloody nose by John Carew.

    • 8' Gerard Houllier won three and lost four of the 12 Premier League meetings as coach of Liverpool against Arsenal. (Opta)
    • 7' Stephen Warnock stretches to reach a ball down the channel from Ashley Young and brings down Sebastien Squillaci. The French defender will continue, but he felt that!
    • 6' Chamakh tries to play Wilshere in and the ball comes back to him. The shot is dragged wide. All Arsenal so far.
    • 5' Good build-up from the Gunners before Bacary Sagna's cross is glanced off target by Chamakh. Arsenal have a throw though, but Gael Clichy's cross is caught by Friedel.
    • 4' After two defeats in a week, the Gunners have started with real purpose this afternoon.
    • 3' Luke Young dispossesses Arshavin, but then Alex Song does the same to Pires. Jack Wilshere slots a weighted pass through to Tomas Rosicky, who fires a low strike across the face of goal and just wide of the far post! Quite the start from Arsenal here.
    • 2' Chamakh almost scored a quicker goal than the one he scored in the recent 2-0 win over Wolves!
    • 1' Right away Arsenal pounce on some dithering in defence and Andrey Arshavin plays in Marouane Chamakh... the Moroccan dnks the ball over Brad Friedel but James Collins is there to clear off the line!
    • 1' After a friendly pre-match handshake between Wenger and Pires, Arsenal kick off and we're underway!
    • 12:43 So 37-year-old Robert Pires, who made almost 300 appearances for Arsenal during the club's most glorious era, faces off against his former club. Can he do to his former employers what William Gallas did last weekend? We're about to find out. Here come the teams...
    • 12:40 Refereeing this match is Mark Clattenburg. The Gosforth official sent off Manchester City's Dedryck Boyata after just five minutes against Arsenal a month ago. The Gunners went on to win 3-0 at Eastlands. He has dished out 31 bookings in 11 league games so far this season, one of the lowest rates in the division.
    • 12:35 HEAD-TO-HEAD: Villa and Arsenal have met 162 times in the league. Aston Villa have won 59, Arsenal 65 and there have been 38 draws. In the Premier League era, Villa have won six, Arsenal 17 and there have been 13 draws. Arsenal are unbeaten in their last three league matches against Aston Villa, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last two. Their only defeat in the last 23 was 2-0 at the Emirates in November 2008. A Gael Clichy own goal and Gabriel Agbonlahor scored for Villa.
    • 12:30 Houllier admits he is prepared to be patient in his approach to midfielder Stephen Ireland after stating publicly last month that he expects more effort from him. The Villa boss believes Ireland still has more to give but recognises his "special" talent: "I am very patient and I hope everyone is as patient as I am. His attitude is fine. I expect more than he can give at the moment. As a player, he has got something special. I like that. But his input has got to be better."
    • 12:25 Arsene Wenger has revealed his surprise at old friend Gerard Houllier's return to frontline management as the pair prepare to go head to head for the first time in more than six years: "I wasn't surprised that Aston Villa took him but I was surprised - because he was in a position as director of the French Football Federation - that he chose to leave his job and come again into a hotseat after what he has gone through."
    • 12:20 Arsenal can go top of the league - albeit briefly - with a win here this lunchtime, while Villa can move into the top eight ahead of the rest of the weekend's fixtures. Premier League table
    • 12:15 Arsenal make seven changes from the side that lost 2-0 at Portuguese side Braga on Wednesday. With captain Cesc Fabregas ruled out for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, the midfield is made up of Rosicky, Song Wilshere Nasri and Arshavin. It will fall to the in-form Nasri to take Fabregas's playmaker role. Marouane Chamakh returns up front in place of Nicklas Bendtner.
    • 12:10 The big team news is that former Arsenal winger Robert Pires - who won the double and was part of the 'Invincibles' side of 2003-04 with the Gunners - starts for Villa against his former club. Striker John Carew returns after four games out with a calf injury, while defender James Collins is back after a similar complaint. Striker Gabriel Agbonlahor will not feature after being taken ill.
