  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Sunderland
    • Birmingham City
    • 90+4 Any opportunity to get the ball up the other end of the field is duly taken by the hosts. Precious seconds tick by and that's it from the Stadium of Light.
    • 90+2 Zigic feeds off a Jerome knock down but his half-volley creeps just wide.
    • 90' Incredible scenes. Can the visitors get the win now?
    • 88' GOAL!! Equaliser. It is a mess and it looks like it was Ridgewell who got the final touch but Johnson also got something on it. Great ball from the Scot.
    • 87' Al-Muhammadi hauls down Larsson and McFadden is over it!!
    • 86' Birmingham's best chance of getting something from this one looks to be from a set-piece - can the Black Cats' back four remain strong?
    • 84' Niall Quinn looks a worried man in the director's box - it is a case of holding out for the hosts now.
    • 83' New signing Wellbeck for a tired Bent.
    • 81' How did Dann miss that. Another Larsson delivery falls on his head but he gets his bearings wrong and lets the ball fly past him and harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
    • 80' Bowyer draws a save from Mignolet with a quick turn and shot from the edge of the area.
    • 78' Sunderland look to have lost their legs and their way. All Birmingham now.
    • 76' GOAL!! Dann dispatches a great corner through the legs of Mignolet having risen above Onuoha at the far post.
    • 75' Sunderland win a corner but make little of it, the visitors break and win one of their own. Larsson to deliver.
    • 73' Al-Muhammadi takes a wild swipe from distance that is always rising.
    • 71' Jerome heads a McFadden centre straight at Mignolet.
    • 69' Sunderland look happy to sit back and invite Birmingham on to them. The visitors lack invention and continue to go long - with little success.
    • 67' A last ditch challenge from Campbell denies Scott Dann a clear sight of goal - that would have been 2-1 there if it were not for the timely intervention at the back post from the forward.
    • 65' Zigic draws another save from Mignolet - they are coming into it now.
    • 64' Riveros for Malbranque. 4-4-1 for the home side now.
    • 63' Great save. Sunderland stand off Zigic and the big Serbian shows a lovely touch before turning and firing goal wards. A great save from the Mignolet denies the forward a goal on his debut.
    • 62' Despite being a man down, Sunderland continue to press high up the field.
    • 60' Onuoha looks an astute signing at right back.
    • 59' The Serbian makes an immediate nuisance of himself, he feeds Ferguson but the Scot flashes his effort over.
    • 57' McLeish responds by introducing summer signing Zigic. Garry O'Connor makes way.
    • 55' GOAL!! Richardson tackles Jerome, and feeds Henderson, who goes long for Bent. Bent tussles with Carr, who arches his head and heads past his own keeper to double the home side's advantage.
    • 54' Bent lays-off for Campbell but his effort is blocked by Jonhson for a corner for the hosts.
    • 54' O'Connor just can't get onto a teasing Larsson cross.
    • 53' Good work from Richardson down the left leads to a throw deep in Sunderland territory.
    • 52' Looks like they'll be a change from both sides.
    • 51' Better start to the second half from the visitors.
    • 49' Sensational tackle from Mensah on Jerome inside the box but the Ghanaian has come off worse and remains in a heap.
    • 48' Mignolet - on his Premier League debut - has yet had a shot to save.
    • 47' McFadden for Fahey for the visitors, while Sunderland continue with two strikers despite being a man down.
    • 46 We're back for the second half.
    • 45+5 And that's the last meaningful piece of action from the first half.
    • 45+3' Great last ditch challenge from Roger Johnson to deny Campbell a clear sight of goal.
    • 41+1 Four minutes of added time at the Stadium of Light.
    • 45' This hasn't been the most entertaining of opening day fixtures but there has been plenty of talking points.
    • 44' Sunderland accumulated the most red cards of any side last season: 9. And with tackling like Cattermole's, you can see why.
    • 42' Cattermole goes through the back of Lee Bowyer and is duly booked for a second time this afternoon. And he is off!
    • 41' Sunderland keep the ball well and look to build from the back.
    • 40' High boot from Bowyer yields a free-kick for the home side.
    • 39' O'Connor chases a ball over the top but again Bramble is there to sweep clear.
    • 38' Sunderland are still firmly on top but are not quite playing at the same tempo as the opening 20 minutes or so.
    • 37' Richardson gives away a free-kick in a dangerous area but Roger Johnson can't get any meaningful contact on the centre and that's Birmingham's first sight of goal.
    • 36' Another magnificent challenge from Bramble.
    • 35' O'Connor and Jerome look like they've never met before - absolutely zero link-up play and they'll have to improve if they're to stay on the pitch come half time.
    • 33' Sunderland continue to spay the ball around well and Al-Muhammadi isolates Ridgewell, nutmegs him and whips a testing ball to the near post. Bowyer tries to hack it clear but gets his bearings all wrong and slices straight at Foster, who produces a magnificent reaction stop.
    • 31' Jerome - struggling to compete with the physicality of Sunderland's back four - gives away another free-kick.
    • 29' Gilt edged miss from Bent. The sometimes England man rises highest to flick on for Campbell who controls and delightfully back heels into the path of the onrushing Bent. But last season's top scorer fails to do the move justice with a skewed effort bearing down on Foster.
    • 28' Cattermole picks up a yellow for a late challenge on Jerome. Deserved.
    • 26' Birmingham look for an immediate riposte through O'Connor but his effort is hugely ambitious and dribbles wide.
    • 24' GOAL. Bent dispatches it bottom left from 12 yards to put Sunderland into a deserved lead. Foster was tantalisingly close to it, though.
    • 24' Yellow card for Carr.
    • 22' Sunderland break with Bent, who is scythed down by Johnson. But referee Anthony Taylor waves play on. Campbell latches onto the loose ball but he is taken out by Carr. Surely outside the area but the assistant referee gives the penalty. Incredible.
    • 21' That stoppage has taken some of the steam out of Sunderland's early play but despite that Birmingham are yet to get a foothold in the game.
    • 19' Alex McLeish takes the opportunity to call all of his players to the halfway line for an impromptu tactical team talk.
    • 17' Short hiatus for an injury to Garry O'Connor who has a nasty gash to his head following an aerial challenge from Cattermole, who was leading with his elbow.
    • 15' Bramble and Mensah have been utterly dominant thus far. Birmingham will need to tweak their tactics if they are to get anything out of these two - the long ball just isn't working.
    • 14' Richardson has - from left back - thus far given the home side a great outlet down the left. His overlap yields little though this time.
    • 12' CHANCE!! Richardson's cross finds its way to Bent, his touch lets him down but the break of the ball falls to Malbranque, whose snap half-volley fails to trouble Foster.
    • 10' The Blues lost 12 of their 19 trips away from St Andrews last season and on this showing they'll struggle on their travels again this season.
    • 9' Jerome latches onto a clever through ball from Ferguson but debutant Bramble times his challenge to perfection and the visitors have a throw deep in Sunderland territory but they make little of it.
    • 8' Birmingham are yet to test rookie keeper Simon Mignolet.
    • 6' Sunderland have been tremendous thus far. Birmingham look shell shocked and are yet to get going.
    • 5' Almost an early slip from Foster - he attempts to allow the ball to run out of play but misjudges the flight of the ball. Campbell steals in behind him to prevent a goal kick but can only concede a throw
    • 3' Sunderland have begun with a tremendous tempo and Steve Bruce must be delighted on the touchline.
    • 2' Bent leads an early attack down the Birmingham left and Roger Johnson scythes him down dangerously close to the area. Richardson whips it in but it is easily cleared.
    • 1' Birmingham kick-off under blistering sunshine in Wearside. They kick right to left and immeadiately pump it forward but Bramble is there to collect and look for Bent long.
    • 14:55 Referee Anthony Taylor leads the sides out to a rapturous reception in the North-East.
    • 14:50 Sunderland have won their last two Premier League home matches against Birmingham. In fact the visitors have not won any of their five last league meetings between the teams - their last victory was a 1-0 Championship win in August 2006.
    • 14:45 These two have met 104 times in the league - Sunderland have been victorious on 49 occasions while there have been 20 draws and 35 Birmingham victories.
    • 14:40 A back spasm suffered on England duty does not deny Ben Foster a debut for new club Birmingham but another summer signing, Serbia striker Nikola Zigic, makes the bench with last season's leading scorer Jerome leading the visitor's attack.
    • 14:35 Despite having to withdraw from the England squad in midweek following a back spasm, Darren Bent is fit enough to take his place in a Sunderland starting eleven that also includes debutants Titus Bramble and Nedum Onouha. But Andy Reid (Achilles) is out while George McCartney and Anton Ferdinand have not been given squad numbers.
    • 14:30 Sunderland: Mignolet, Onuoha, Bramble, Mensah, Richardson, Al-Muhammadi, Cattermole, Henderson, Malbranque, Campbell, Bent. Subs: Carson, Bardsley, Zenden, Da Silva, Riveros, Welbeck, Waghorn. /// Birmingham: Foster, Carr, Ridgewell, Johnson, Dann, Larsson, Bowyer, Ferguson, Fahey, Jerome, O'Connor. Subs: Taylor, Murphy, Gardner, McFadden, Michel, Zigic, Parnaby.
    • 14:25 Sunderland fared little better following a very strong start to the 2009-10 season. Having flirted with the top six for the early months of the season, a 14 game winless streak left the Black Cats looking over their shoulders as the season drew to a close.
    • 14:20 Alex McLeish led his newly promoted side to a more than respectable ninth placed finish last season - their highest-league finish for 51 years - but they tailed off towards the end of the season and only the three relegated clubs and West Ham United and Wigan accumulated less points during the second half of the season.
