    • 90+3' FULL TIME. A horrible game comes to an end. Phil Jones scored the winner, while Chicharito, Given and Jenas all suffered injuries.
    • 90+2' We will have three minutes of added time.
    • 90' Welbeck has the ball in the back of the net! But he is offside when collecting the ball from Rooney and steering his shot past Guzan and into the far corner.
    • 89' Bent runs into Vidic and wants a penalty. No chance of that.
    • 88' Carrick feeds Rooney who then exchanges passes with Giggs before lashing his shot over the bar. Rooney has been pretty tidy today.
    • 88' Welbeck embarks on a fantastic run as he leaves Collins on his bum and finds the touchline, but he runs the ball out of play. Still, that's better than almost anything else we have seen today.
    • 86' Hopefully the referee will bring a mercifully swift end to proceedings in what has been simply an awful game. How about four minutes early, ref?
    • 85' Our stats boys have jinxed that, haven't they? Don't send angry emails to us, United fans, if you don't win this.
    • 84' Stat from Infostrada: "This is set to be the first time in PL history that Manchester United win three away matches in a row by a 1-0 scoreline."
    • 83' Welbeck exchanges passes with Rooney but can't get on the end of the return ball as Collins sticks a leg in.
    • 81' Given how devoid of ideas Villa have been it will be frustrating for United that they haven't killed this game off already. Will they pay for that, I wonder? Nah, probably not.
    • 80' A nervous moment for Lindegaard as he deals unconvincingly with a ball over the top. However, United clear from the subsequent free-kick.
    • 79' Danny Welbeck comes on to replace Young.
    • 78' Young calls Guzan into action with a curling effort but it arrives straight at the chest of the American keeper.
    • 77' Stat from Infostrada: "It is 13 months since Aston Villa last went three PL matches without a goal."
    • 75' Great save! Dunne hooks a hopeful ball into the box and Collins meets the dropping ball with a thumping header that forces Lindegaard into a smart save.
    • 74' Evra leads when his arm when challenging Albrighton in the air but avoids a possible booking.
    • 73' Young embarks on a nice run infield and pulls a shot just wide of the post. A decent effort from the former Villa man.
    • 71' Valencia darts into the box and feels a brush of contact. Credit to him for not going down though.
    • 70' CHANCE! AN ACTUAL CHANCE! Dunne flicks on a corner and Heskey heads over at the back post when really he should have hit the target.
    • 69' Agbonlahor gets the ball 20 yards out and sends a looping shot well over the bar. However, the lino spots that it took a touch off a United player and it is a corner to Villa.
    • 68' A glimmer of excitement as Rooney spreads the ball wide to Young but the offside flag is raised. Excitement extinguished.
    • 67' If this gets any worse I might have to start booing myself. What a terrible game.
    • 65' So the most notable aspect of this game, aside from that nice Jones goal, has been three injuries. This is the level of dross we are dealing with.
    • 64' Emile Heskey is the man brought on to replace Jenas.
    • 64' Rio Ferdinand is replaced by Ryan Giggs, so Jones goes into defence.
    • 63' It looked as though he caught his foot in the turf and he will need to come off.
    • 62' Now it's the turn of Jermaine Jenas to go down in a heap. He just fell to ground all by himself and now needs treatment.
    • 61' Agbonlahor drives one in from a rather hopeful angle and Lindegaard smothers the ball when it bobbles through to him.
    • 60' Herd has to come off as he is injured so Stiliyan Petrov comes on for Villa.
    • 59' Valencia does well to race over to the touchline and keep the ball in but his touch allows Warnock to steal it away and Villa clear.
    • 58' Warnock makes a fine challenge to deny Rooney just as he looks ready to pull the trigger in the box.
    • 57' Aston Villa have had two shots so far today. Alex McLeish will be facing more searching questions from the fans after this, even considering the opposition.
    • 55' Nani get sprinting and fires one in from 30 yards. Guzan deals with it easily though.
    • 54' ESPN are reporting that Hernandez has suffered suspected ankle ligament damage.
    • 53' Stat from Infostrada: "It is over four-and-a-half hours of PL football since Aston Villa last scored a goal – Agbonlahor in their 3-2 home win against Norwich on November 5."
    • 52' Bannan's shot from all of 30 yards hits a United man. Still no invention from Villa, who are a bit of a charmless side at present.
    • 51' Agbonlahor tries to twist his way past Smalling but the United defender sticks with him and concedes a corner.
    • 50' Stat from Infostrada: "Manchester United have won all five previous PL visits to Villa Park when leading at half time."
    • 48' Rooney enjoys the first chance of the second half as he nutmegs Bannan in the centre of the pitch and drags a shot wide from 25 yards. The shot appeared to take a touch off a Villa defender but it is a goal-kick.
    • 46' KICK OFF!

    • 45+8' HALF TIME. Boos ring out at Villa Park as the home side are 1-0 down to a goal from Phil Jones.
    • 45+7' We are nearing the end of this hugely prolonged first half and McLeish is on his feet urging his side to push on.
    • 45+6' It is Nani who strikes it but he thumps his effort against the wall and it deflects behind for a corner. United waste the set-piece.
    • 45+5' Warnock brings down Jones. Sorry, replays show that Jones actually dived. Either way it is a free-kick to Manchester United.
    • 45+4' Young plays the ball back to Jones, who delivers a teasing first-time cross into the box. Villa head clear.
    • 45+3' Stat from Infostrada: "Brad Guzan comes on for only his second PL appearance and first since March 2009, when he came on after 64 minutes of Villa’s 5-0 defeat at Liverpool. He conceded once in that time."
    • 45+2' We will have eight added minutes. Yes, EIGHT. Largely due to the Chicharito injury of course.
    • 45+1' Young goes off but promptly looks ready to come back on again. He isn't hurt.
    • 45' Oh dear, another injury. Young goes to ground and requires treatment. He went over on his ankle in a challenge with James Collins. On come the physios.
    • 44' Albrighton swings in a cross from the right but Vidic spots the danger and comes across quickly to clear for United.
    • 43' Villa have had one shot to United's six, while the visitors have enjoyed 55 per cent of the possession.
    • 41' Villa have been pretty poor so far today. They have failed to create any decent chances and look sloppy in possession.
    • 39' Given is leaving the scene on a stretcher but he is sitting up and doesn't appear to be in too much discomfort.
    • 38' The change is made as Guzan replaces Given in goal.
    • 38' Stat from Infostrada: "Only once in PL history have Manchester United failed to win after taking the lead against Aston Villa – a 1-1 draw at Villa Park in December 1998."
    • 37' Given suffered the injury when clearing from that Jones ball over the top and he looks in some pain. Fergie has a smile on the bench.
    • 36' Villa are getting Brad Guzan ready as Given appears to have pulled something.
    • 35' Jones punts a long ball over the top that tempts Given to race off his line and the goalkeeper times his intervention perfectly with Young chasing into it.
    • 34' Bent winces as he makes his way off the pitch but the striker will continue.
    • 33' Bent suffers a heavy landing in an aerial challenge with Vidic and requires treatment. It looks as though he is winded.
    • 32' Great effort! Valencia collects the ball 25 yards out and unleashes a fearsome effort that flies just over the bar. He hit that so well.
    • 31' Jones gets a touch to the ball when chasing in to close down a clearance from Given.
    • 30' Herd spots a gap in the United midfield and drives forward but is dispossessed. This game has been a touch scrappy.
    • 29' Bannan makes a clever diagonal run into the box and is spotted by Gabriel Agbonlahor but the Scotland international can't quite get control of the ball.
    • 27' A free-kick for Villa is wasted when Barry Bannan's deep delivery is headed wide by Dunne as he stretches to meet the ball.
    • 26' Stat from Infostrada: "At 19 years and 285 days old, Jones is the third youngest scorer in the division this season after Connor Wickham and Apostolos Vellios. He is also the youngest player to score for United since 17-year-old Federico Macheda in April 2009 (also against Aston Villa)."
    • 25' A lovely move from United almost brings a second goal. Rooney takes advantage of some poor defending by Dunne to play in Valencia, and his cross is headed at goal by Nani. Shay Given saves.
    • 24' Marc Albrighton thumps into Patrice Evra with a strong challenge and escapes a booking. It was a bit clumsy though.
    • 23' Stat from Infostrada: "Phil Jones scored his first senior goal. It equals his tally against Manchester United, having scored an own goal v Benfica in the CL."
    • 22' Dunne heads back from a corner and Chris Herd directs a header at goal, but Anders Lindegaard claims the ball with ease.
    • 20' GOAL! Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester United! Terrible defending all round from Villa. Nani is given acres of space on the left and he picks out Jones, who sidefoots home on the volley with a wonderfully accomplished finish.
    • 19' Nemanja Vidic heads back across goal from a corner and the ball falls to Chris Smalling. He tries to shoot on the turn but is blocked by a combination of Stephen Warnock and Dunne.
    • 18' United are enjoying plenty of possession at Villa Park, let's hope we don't see the kind of surrender McLeish oversaw against Spurs.
    • 17' Stat from Infostrada: "There have been 24 PL goals scored today. This is the third most on a single day in the PL this season after October 29 (31 goals) and November 19 (25 goals)."
    • 16' United construct a lovely flowing move but eventually the ball is played to Phil Jones and his shot flies high into the stands at Villa Park. Jeers all round from the home supporters.
    • 14' Here is Young in possession on the left. He makes a bit of space but sees his cross cleared by James Collins.
    • 13' Nani is the man asked to go central with Rooney, rather than Young, which is a surprise. Immediately he takes possession of the ball and bangs a shot well off target.
    • 12' On comes Valencia. We can only hope that injury to Hernandez is not too serious.
    • 11' Generous applause from the Villa fans as Hernandez is taken off. Valencia prepares to come on.
    • 10' Hernandez's leg is being carefully placed in a brace and this doesn't look a good one. Fingers crossed that the Mexican is okay. The game has been stopped for over three minutes now.
    • 9' Danny Welbeck is on the bench but it appears as though Antonio Valencia will be coming on, meaning Ashley Young will shift into the centre probably.
    • 8' The universal signal for 'we need to make a substitution' is made by the physios and Hernandez will be coming off. The stretcher men take to the turf.
    • 7' Oh this doesn't look good. Javier Hernandez goes over on his ankle and immediately signals to the bench.
    • 5' It's been a pretty slow start from both sets of players and we are playing at nothing more than half-pace so far.
    • 3' Alex McLeish is already whistling to his players and passing on tactical instructions. It could be a long evening for Villa today.
    • 2' Richard Dunne just performed a sharp turn and then stroked a pass down the touchline with the outside of his boot. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?
    • 1' KICK OFF!
    • 17.32 We observe a minute's appreciation for former Wales manager Gary Speed, who died last weekend. Some Villa fans have made a banner reading "RIP Speedo", a classy touch.
    • 17.28 You may have noticed there is no Charles N'Zogbia today for Villa. He has been dropped due to a breach of club discipline apparently.
    • 17.25 Want to have your say on the game? Get in contact with me on Twitter and I will try and use some of your comments here where possible. Follow Tom Adams on Twitter
    • 17.20 Sir Alex Fergson tells ESPN he has rested De Gea ahead of the Champions League tie with Basel in the week that will determine United's European destiny. He says: "We have a big game on Tuesday and it was a good opportunity to rest David for that game."
    • 17.15 Tottenham have gone second with their emphatic win over Bolton today and sit one point above United. Due to their superior goal difference a point will take United second again, but they will be intent on reducing an eight-point gap opened up by Manchester City.
    • 17:10 This will be Sir Alex Ferguson’s 69th PL game against a former player. He has won 50, drawn 13 and lost 5 of his previous 68 PL matches against them. He is unbeaten in his last 28 PL matches against them (22 wins), since a 4-3 defeat at Mark Hughes’ Blackburn in February 2006.
    • 17:05 Alex McLeish has failed to win in all five PL matches against his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson - 2 draws, 3 defeats. He is unbeaten in both previous PL home matches against him - his Birmingham side drawing 1-1 in both Jan 2010 and Dec 2010.
    • 17:00 Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 15 PL visits to Villa Park, drawing each of their last three, since a 3-1 defeat in August 1995.
    • 16:55 A very interesting choice between the sticks by Sir Alex Ferguson, as he opts for Anders Lindegaard ahead of David De Gea. We'll also get another chance to see Phil Jones in midfield. And with Chris Smalling at right-back, United have four centre-backs in their starting XI.
