    • 90+5' FULL TIME! Everton 1-0 Manchester United! What a fantastic result for the home side and what a performance from Fellaini - he was an absolute monster in midfield tonight. Not a fine debut for Van Persie though.
    • 90+4' Stat from Infostrada: "Everton are on course to keep their first clean sheet in an opening PL fixture since 1998."
    • 90+2' Goodison erupts as Fellaini is replaced by Johnny Heitinga.
    • 90+2' Anderson takes aim from 25 yards and his effort is a good one, just veering away from goal as it flashes maybe a metre wide.
    • 90+1' We will have four minutes of added time.
    • 90' Everton run the clock down a little bit more as Steven Naismith comes on for his Everton debut in place of Jelavic.
    • 89' Great stuff from Coleman as he twists away from Vidic and draws the foul. Precious seconds tick away.
    • 88' Stat from Infostrada: "Manchester United could lose their opening PL match of the season for the fourth time and first since 2004. On two of the three previous occasions they went on to become champions."
    • 86' United replace Cleverley, who has done little today, with Anderson to add some more bite in midfield.
    • 84' This will not be a good start to the season at all for United. They have been caught short by Everton's superior physical condition.
    • 83' Stat from Infostrada: "Only twice in PL history has any club lost their opening PL match of the season and gone on to become champions - Manchester United in 1992-93 and 1995-96."
    • 81' Everton change things up as Seamus Coleman replaces Osman in midfield.
    • 79' United go close! Van Persie with a sumptuous pass through the legs of Distin to try and find Kagawa square but Howard rushes out quickly to put the Japan international off.
    • 77' A chance for United as Ashley Young replaces the ineffectual Nani.
    • 75' Kagawa, Rooney and Van Persie swarm on the edge of the Everton box but Hibbert heads away from a Nani cross as Evreton repel United effectively.
    • 74' Another foul from Fellaini and he is running the risk of a booking for persistent fouling here.
    • 73' Hibbert clears for Everton and it is telling that there isn't a single member of the home team in the United half. They appear to now be sitting on this lead.
    • 72' Fellaini has now switched to spoiler mode, committing a couple of sneaky fouls to prevent United from breaking through the centre of the pitch.
    • 70' United are beginning to step things up a bit and when Evra swings in a cross, Vidic gets a semi-dangerous header back across goal. There isn't a United shirt to get on the end of it though.
    • 69' Here he comes. Van Persie replaces Welbeck in the United attack.
    • 67' Everton clear the ball off the line! The ball ricochets around in the box and when Kagawa lays the ball off to Cleverley, the midfielder's quick shot is blocked by the outstretched leg of Jagielka with Howad beaten.
    • 65' Stat from Infostrada: "Manchester United failed to come back to win a single PL match after falling behind last season. They last won after going behind when they beat Blackpool 4-2 at home in May 2011."
    • 64' This game has been all about one man: Fellaini. He is just knocking United's defenders aside and they can't cope with his pretty unique mix of brute strength and finesse.
    • 62' Scholes is beginning to push his luck and, already on a booking, commits another foul. A free kick to Everton and when Jagielka heads the ball back across goal, Fellaini is there to leap above the United defence and head into the arms of De Gea.
    • 60' Stat from Infostrada: "Marouane Fellaini scored his 15th career PL goal for Everton, and only his fifth header."
    • 59' Ferguson summons Van Persie and the Dutchman begins his warm-up...
    • 57' GOAL! Everton 1-0 Manchester United! Fellaini, who else? The Belgian outmuscles Carrick to meet a corner from the left from Baines and power his header past De Gea. Richly deserved.
    • 56' Kagawa plays in Rooney and then runs around the back of the striker, but Rooney goes for goal and thunders his shot off target from 20 yards.
    • 54' Stat from Infostrada: "Only twice in PL history have Manchester United failed to score in their opening PL match of the season – the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea (2004) and 0-0 home draw with Reading (2007)."
    • 52' Kagawa continues to impress - playing the ball around with ease and attempting backheels and dummies. He looks to be a superb addition to this United team.
    • 50' And now here come United on the break! Kagawa plays in Welbeck with a perfectly weighted pass and for a second it seems as though the forward has got away from the Everton defence. However, Jagielka puts in a fantastic tackle to halt the United man.
    • 49' Everton hit the bar! Another brilliant move. Fellaini and Pienar influential in the build-up before Tony Hibbert's cross finds the Belgian. He rises above Vidic to head the ball down to Osman and the midfielder thumps his volley against the underside of the bar.
    • 47' United will know better than most teams that Gibson likes a shot from range but the Ireland international sees his shot from 25 yards soar well off target.
    • 46' KICK OFF!
    • - What did you think of that first half? Let me know on Twitter now. Follow Tom Adams on Twitter!
    • 45+2' Kagawa floats a gorgeous pass into the box for Rooney and the striker sends his header wide of the post. What a cross. And that is half-time. Fellaini and De Gea outstanding so far.
    • 45+1' We will have two minutes of added time.
    • 45' What a save! De Gea! Wow. Baines lines up a free kick and curls the ball towards the top corner, but the Spaniard races to his left and throws up his right arm to palm the ball out just as it threatens to creep in under the bar.
    • 43' Now it is United's turn to apply pressure and after Distin gets a leg to a low effort from Cleverley, Pienaar pushes his luck when getting to grips with Nani in the box. Ultimately it is good work from the Everton man though as he draws the foul from his opponent.
    • 41' Everton work the ball fantastically again and Fellaini leaps above his markers to knock the ball down to Osman. He has to the ball bounce across his body but then lashes an effort at goal on the spin from eight yards, De Gea making a fantastic reflex save.
    • 39' And now United want a penalty. Kagawa releases Welbeck with a lovely pass and Jagielka appears to tug the striker back just on the edge of the box. Welbeck still pokes a shot wide but is bemused to see referee Marriner wave play on.
    • 38' Chance for United! Rooney finds himself with the ball at his feet just 10 yards from goal but his fierce snapshot is too close to Howard.
    • 37' Great work from Tony Hibbert as he fully extends his neck to head the ball away from Welbeck at the far post from a deep cross. Everton better in all areas of the pitch so far.
    • 35' This has been a masterful display of physicality and quality from Fellaini. He is causing United no end of trouble. But now it is the turn of Baines to get into the box and almost pull the trigger. Everton are playing some lovely stuff at the moment.
    • 34' Everton's mini-siege continues. Baines slips a pass to Pienaar on the edge of the box and the South African forces a fine save from De Gea with a wicked curling effort. Jelavic can't find a team-mate when collecting the loose ball and crossing though.
    • 32' Stat from Infostrada: "Everton have won four of their last six PL home matches against Manchester clubs, losing only once."
    • 30' Distin is required to stick a boot in at one end before Pienaar attempts to drive a shot home from 25 yards following a piece of chest control from Fellaini. He catches it wrong though and the ball flies off target.
    • 29' Rooney takes it and swings his effort low towards the corner. Howard spots it and dives full-length to tip the ball round the post.
    • 28' Kagawa flicks the ball square to Scholes and the midfielder pokes a neat pass into Rooney before being brought down as he sought the return ball. Free kick to United.
    • 26' This is excellent stuff from Everton: they are really having a go at United and at present are the superior side. Fellaini a constant threat to this rather makeshift United defence.
    • 25' The next corner arrives and Jelavic produces a gorgeous bit of control to pull the ball down at the far post and spin in one swift movement. The Belgian gets a shot away on the turn but pulls his effort wide of the post.
    • 24' Jelavic, Pienaar and Osman combine in thrilling fashion and the Croatian striker then gets free in the box to test De Gea from a tight angle. From the corner, the ball pops out to Pienaar, who sees a floating header tipped over the bar by De Gea.
    • 23' Nani is given too much space 20 yards from goal and is allowed to measure up a shot at goal that whistles just past Howard's far post. The keeper is rather unhappy with his defence and lets them know in no uncertain terms.
    • 22' Cleverly feeds a quick pass into Rooney and the touch through for Kagawa is delightful. Kagawa then returns the favour with a backheel but it is just away from Rooney and United lose possession. Still, that's very encouraging.
    • 21' Welbeck looks to flick the ball into the path of Rooney with the outside of his boot but after seeing his initial attempt blocked, he then follows up with a low shot that is also halted by an Everton boot.
    • 19' Stat from Opta: "David De Gea ended last season with the best saves-to-shots ratio in the Premier League (77.9%)."
    • 17' Nemanja Vidic races out to the right flank to foul Fellaini and Baines puts in a dangerous free kick that David De Gea gets a touch to under pressure. The keeper was clattered by Fellaini though and Fergie is furious no free kick was given. The young Spaniard needs a bit of treatment.
    • 15' Lovely stuff from Fellaini as he escapes the clutches of Valencia and Carrick to drive into the pocket of space between them and hit the byline. Jelavic wants a pass to the centre but Fellaini takes the shot on from the tightest of angles and rattles the post!
    • 13' It takes Scholes just 13 minutes to earn his first booking of the season. There will be plenty more. It's a typically terrible tackle as he flies into the back of Darron Gibson.
    • 12' Stat from Infostrada: "At 37 years and 278 days old, Paul Scholes is the oldest outfield player in the opening matchround of the PL season."
    • 10' Valencia isn't a natural right-back of course but he does provide a real threat when forced to play back there. His pace and crossing are fantastic and he relishes the chance to bomb down the flank.
    • 9' Emergency defender Michael Carrick spots a lofted pass through from Baines to Fellaini and extends his leg to intercept. Kagawa then sets Rooney free with a nice pass but the striker can't find a team-mate with his subsequent cut-back.
    • 8' Emergency defender Michael Carrick spots a lofted pass through from Baines to Fellaini and extends his leg to intercept. Kagawa then sets Rooney free with a nice pass but the striker can't find a team-mate with his subsequent cut-back.
    • 6' Stat from Infostrada: "Wayne Rooney made his PL debut just over 10 years ago – at Goodison Park for Everton in their 2-1 draw with Tottenham on August 17, 2002. Since then he has scored 144 career PL goals – more than any other player in the division (Frank Lampard is second in the list with 122 goals)."
    • 5' Antonio Valencia gets very lucky. He has his arms all over Nikica Jelavic when a corner comes in. Referee Andre Marriner sees it but no doubt feels Jelavic was doing the same.
    • 4' Kagawa, wearing the number 24 shirt, is playing in an advanced role off Wayne Rooney. It is where we expected him, but once Van Persie comes into the side they will have to do some shuffling around.
    • 3' Nani goes into the book. Still smarting from his failure to win a corner, the winger slides in late on Baines and catches the Everton man's heel. It was a bit messy but probably not worthy of a booking.
    • 3' Nani threatens to race clear down the right after spinning Baines and as he comes into the box, Sylvain Distin comes across to stick a boot in and ultimately win a goal-kick. Nani is angry at the decision but it was a fine piece of defending.
    • 2' Everton win a free kick on the left and Leighton Baines take the first of a great many set-pieces this season, swinging in a decent ball that Leon Osman heads wide of the near post.
    • 1' KICK OFF!
    • 19.55 Want to get in contact during the game? You can find me on Twitter. Follow Tom Adams on Twitter!
    • 19.50 I think it is safe to assume we will see Van Persie in the second half at some point. Sir Alex Ferguson has just been on TV to explain that he didn't feel able to start the Dutchman given his lack of games since Euro 2012. David Moyes, meanwhile, was at pains to point out that Everton are actually playing in this game as well. Still, the focus is all on the new arrival from Arsenal.
    • 19.45 Manchester United's title challenge fell apart towards the end of last season when they drew 4-4 with Everton at Old Trafford so there is little danger they will underestimate a home side full of quality. Fellaini and Pienaar were instrumental in that memorable match, along with Jelavic.
    • 19.40 It was a fantastic opening weekend in the Premier League, with red cards, great goals and scorching debuts. If you missed any then if you are in the UK you can take a look at our extensive highlights.
    • 19.35 Time for some stats from Opta: David De Gea ended last season with the best saves-to-shots ratio in the Premier League (77.9%); Everton have won just one of the last 14 Premier League games against Manchester United (W1 D4 L9); Nikica Jelavic was Everton’s top-scorer in the 2011-12 Premier League (nine goals), despite only playing his first game in February.
    • 19.30 As for Everton, their own new face, Steven Naismith, only makes the bench as well and as a result their team has a very familiar look to it. Belgian forward Kevin Mirallas was not signed in time to be registered for this game.
    • 19.25 So United's huge summer signing is restricted to the bench but Shinji Kagawa takes up his place in a rather sexy midfield three alongside Cleverley and Scholes. Concern comes in the shape of the United defence, which due to a string of injuries features two midfielders. Scott Wootton, 20, is a defensive option from the bench and may make his debut.
    • 19.20 TEAMS: Everton: Howard; Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Osman, Gibson, Neville, Pienaar; Fellaini; Jelavic. Subs: Mucha, Heitinga, Naismith, Gueye, Barkley, Coleman, Anichebe. /// Man Utd: De Gea; Valencia, Carrick, Vidic, Evra; Scholes, Kagawa, Cleverley; Nani, Rooney, Welbeck. Subs: Rafael, Anderson, Berbatov, Lindegaard, Young, Van Persie, Wootton.
    • 19.15 Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Manchester United's first Premier League game of the season, against Everton. Robin van Persie is on the bench tonight but Shinji Kagawa starts for United at Goodison Park.
  • Summary

    • 79' United go close! Van Persie with a sumptuous pass through the legs of Distin to try and find Kagawa square but Howard rushes out quickly to put the Japan international off.
