    • - FULL TIME. Two defensive errors prevent Liverpool from getting a win at home to champions Manchester City. They deserved all three points.
    • 90+5' Allen - who deserves three points today - tries his luck from range but sees his effort float over the bar. That should be that.
    • 90+4' Late, late into the game now and when the ball bounces out to Tevez from a corner his bobbling effort dribbles wide.
    • 90+2' Johnson spots a gap 20 yards from goal but his low effort is easily claimed by Hart. Both sides are looking for the winner.
    • 90' We will have four, dramatic, minutes of added time.
    • 88' Liverpool mount pressure again and Shelvey sees a decent effort deflected behind by the head of Kolo Toure. The ball comes in, is cleared, but then Liverpool cross again and Carroll has a header cleared off the line by Jack Rodwell!
    • 86' City go close! Kolarov finds space on the left and his low cross is hit first time, and over the bar, by Dzeko on the run.
    • 85' Stat from Infostrada: "Carlos Tevez scores his fifth PL goal against Liverpool, he has only netted more PL goals against Bolton, Chelsea and Wigan (all six)."
    • 83' Liverpool want the win and here comes Andy Carroll as a replacement for Borini. He gets a great reception.
    • 82' Gerrard rolls the ball off to Jonjo Shelvey and the young midfielder rifles a shot just over the bar. A fine effort from 20 yards.
    • 81' You have to feel sorry for Liverpool but they have shot themselves in the foot.
    • 80' GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City! Oh no, calamity from Skrtel. He checks back on the left and tries to find Reina with a pass back, only for the ball to roll straight into the path of Tevez. He shows good composure to round Reina and convert, but what a horrible mistake.
    • 79' Lovely stuff from Skrtel as he makes a fantastic clearance in the centre of his own box. The defender has had a superb day.
    • 78' Dzeko's first touch is neat as he spins away from his man in the box but on the turn he fires the ball high over the bar. A poor shot, ultimately.
    • 76' A change for City, long overdue, as David Silva comes on for James Milner.
    • 74' Well, replays show that was a pretty blatant penalty.
    • 73' Glen Johnson drives into the box and Kolarov is guilty of a clumsy challenge as he fells the Liverpool defender from behind. The referee is unmoved though, despite the protests from the home supporters and players.
    • 71' Stat from Infostrada: "Luis Suarez scores from a direct free kick. He is the first Liverpool player in the PL to score from a direct free kick in the PL since Craig Bellamy in December 2011 against Newcastle. It is Suarez's first free kick goal in the PL. He netted five in the Dutch Eredivisie, all for Ajax."
    • 69' Now Borini tries to feed Suarez in the centre of the box but Rodwell - who gave away the foul on Gerrard to allow Liverpool to get back in front - intercepts.
    • 67' GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Manchester City! What a wonderful goal from Suarez! The Uruguayan measures up a shot from a free kick from 25 yards and curls his shot around the wall and just inside the near post. Perfectly placed.
    • 66' Liverpool's response is quick, Kelly put out of his misery as Jose Enrique comes on.
    • 64' GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City! Tevez muscles his way past Sterling on the right and flings in a rather hopeful cross. However, Reina makes a horrible mess of it and Kelly is then unable to clear properly, with Toure latching onto the loose ball and slotting home from close range.
    • 63' Brilliant from Allen as he nicks the ball away from Tevez 25 yards from the Liverpool goal. This has been a great performance from the young midfielder.
    • 62' Another change for City as the ineffectual Balotelli is replaced by Dzeko in attack.
    • 61' Balotelli strikes the base of the post but Milner was caught offside when he strayed into the box to set up the Italian striker with a cut-back.
    • 60' Here is the change for City as Rodwell comes on for Nasri. A defensive change on the face of things but this should free Yaya Toure to move further forward.
    • 59' Again City give the ball away sloppily. Mancini will be furious with the performance his side have produced today.
    • 58' In fact there will be a City change but it is Jack Rodwell, a former Evertonian, who will be coming on...
    • 57' Stat from Infostrada: "City had players sent off in both games against Liverpool last season."
    • 56' City's attackers might want to liven up a bit because Edin Dzeko is warming up. Certainly it can't be long before Mancini shakes things up a bit.
    • 55' Play continues and Liverpool suffer a bit of a nervy moment at the back that is only calmed when Martin Kelly pulls out a nice turn 25 yards from his own box.
    • 53' Uh oh. A concern for Liverpool as Shelvey - himself a replacement for Lucas - goes down after a blow to the leg.
    • 52' This has been a strangely listless performance from Manchester City, who looked rather unconvincing when beating Southampton 3-2 at home on the opening day. All is not particularly well at Eastlands it appears.
    • 50' Big chance for Liverpool! Yaya Toure gives away possession with a sloppy cross-field pass and Borini takes possession, slipping a pass inside to Suarez as he arrives on the edge of the box. The Uruguayan then tries to turn the ball past Hart first time but doesn't get the right contact on the ball.
    • 48' Stat from Infostrada: "Man City trail at half time in an away match in the PL for the first time in 16 months, when they were behind at Liverpool in April 2011 (3-0 HT score and 3-0 result)."
    • 47' Balotelli gets the ball caught under his feet and Liverpool snatch possession, freeing Sterling with a ball into the left channel. Kolo Toure helps him to ground and then kicks the ball away when the decision goes against him.
    • 46' KICK OFF!
    • - What did you make of that first half? Let me know on Twitter now. Follow Tom Adams on Twitter!
    • 45+1' Nasri has a shot blocked by Skrtel as the half draws to a close. Impressive stuff from Liverpool as they lead thanks to the defender's firm header.
    • 45' We will have one minute of added time.
    • 44' Stat from Infostrada: "Man City are behind for the third consecutive time in the PL, however this is the first time they have conceded the opening goal of a PL match since April 8, when they lost 1-0 at Arsenal through a Mikel Arteta goal."
    • 42' Allen with a lovely reverse pass to Suarez and the striker lets fly from 20 yards, only to see his effort fly two metres wide. Another bright moment for Liverpool though.
    • 40' Liverpool are good value for the lead and City have been unable to respond with a clear chance as yet.
    • 38' Stat from Infostrada: "Martin Skrtel scores his sixth PL goal. His first ever PL goal was also against Man City at Anfield (2009). This is now the only team he has scored two PL goals against."
    • 36' Skrtel signed a new contract at the start of the week to end speculation about a possible move to Manchester City this summer.
    • 34' GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City! A wonderful goal for Martin Skrtel. Gerrard's delivery from the corner is glorious and Skrtel times his run to the centre of the box with perfection as he thumps his header past Hart. Great stuff.
    • 33' Gerrard whips in a dangerous cross from the right and Kompany makes a mess of his attempted clearance as the ball fizzes just over for a corner to Liverpool.
    • 32' In what is becoming a furious encounter, now it is Balotelli's turn to threaten. He receives the ball inside the box and jinks to find space before lashing a shot over the bar with his left boot.
    • 31' And now Shelvey has a long-range effort blocked as Liverpool pour forward again. Great stuff from the home side.
    • 30' Liverpool continue to place the visiting defence under pressure as Gerrard finds Suarez with a clever first-time pass to Suarez. However, he shows too much of the ball to Kolo Toure, who sticks his leg in.
    • 29' It is Gerrard with the corner but his low effort to the near post is poor and City clear.
    • 28' Johnson feeds a quick ball into Borini 20 yards from goal and the Italian turns sharply before seeing his shot deflect behind for a corner. Borini tries to gee up the Liverpool fans and they respond.
    • 26' Nasri delivers a curling free kick from the City left and Reina fails to deal with it properly as Tevez almost sneaks in at the back post to head home.
    • 24' Now Sterling, who has made an exciting start to this game, flicks the ball to Suarez with his heel but Kolo Toure intercepts and holds of the wriggling Suarez as City clear.
    • 23' Stat from Opta: "Liverpool posted the worst shooting accuracy in the top flight on the opening weekend of the season, hitting the target with just 22% of attempts. "
    • 22' Kolo Toure comes steaming into the back of Sterling to give away a foul near the half-way line. Messy, but not worthy of a booking in isolation.
    • 20' City go close! Carlos Tevez races onto a through ball deep into the box, jinks to the side of Reina and then rolls a shot along the goal line that comes off the post and back to Reina. But where were the City players following up??
    • 18' Liverpool go close! Sterling picks up the ball on the left wing, cuts onto his right foot and delivers a wickedly dipping cross to the near post. Borini gets ahead of Kolarov to meet it but should do better than side-footing wide.
    • 17' Stat from Infostrada: "Manchester City scored 10 goals in their final three PL away matches of last season. However, prior to that they failed to score more than once in 10 PL away matches in a row."
    • 16' Suarez collects the ball in space in the right channel drifts towards the box and then puts the ball past Pablo Zabaleta, only to find he has left himself too much to do.
    • 15' Nice work from Allen as he dispossesses Balotelli, takes a neat touch then spreads the ball out to Borini wide on the right. However, the Italian forward is guilty of a heavy touch as City win the ball back.
    • 13' Suarez accelerates towards the box but gets the pass wrong when he tries to release Gerrard to the right of the box.
    • 12' City are knocking the ball around calmly in the centre of the pitch - something that Rodgers is looking for his side to do with time. They work it wide to Milner but his cross is cut out by Reina.
    • 11' Sterling pokes a pass wide to Joe Allen, who wants a penalty when the ball strikes Kolarov just inside the box. However, it struck the defender's torso, not his arm.
    • 9' Aleksandar Kolarov gets an early chance from a set-piece and he stings the fingers of Jose Reina with a low effort that bounces in front of the keeper.
    • 8' Brendan Rodgers is studiously making notes on the touchline but a decent portion of his gameplan has already been ruined by that injury to Lucas. Nuri Sahin may be pressed into immediate action when he becomes available next week.
    • 6' Stat from Infostrada: "Roberto Mancini has never won a PL match on Merseyside in five visits, losing four times. He has seen his teams concede nine goals and score only twice."
    • 5' The Brazilian is straight down the tunnel to be replaced by Jonjo Shelvey. That leaves Liverpool with far less bite in midfield.
    • 4' Bad news for Liverpool as Lucas - who missed so much of last season due to injury - has sustained what looks to be a thigh strain and will have to come off.
    • 3' It is a touch unclear how City are set up so far but Raheem Sterling is play down the left for Liverpool and he cuts inside before being halted by a challenge from Vincent Kompany. Gerrard follows up with a shot but it deflects wide.
    • 2' Luis Suarez takes a touch 20 yards from goal and as the ball rolls into the path of Steven Gerrard the captain takes seniority, dribbling a shot wide of the post.
    • 1' KICK OFF!
    • 16:00 The old This Is Anfield sign has been restored, the red nets are back, but are the good times returning for Liverpool? The next 90 minutes may hold a few clues.

    • 15:50 This could be a really intriguing game. It is Brendan Rodgers's first league match at Anfield and we will see if his ideas are beginning to set in, but City pose a huge challenge and another defeat will have those long-suffering Liverpool fans in a state of depression once again following an opening loss to West Brom. Premier League table
    • 15:45 Carlos Tevez is conducting a pre-match interview in English with Sky Sports. In other news, pigs have just started flying and it's getting a bit chilly in hell. Finally!
    • 15:40 Some stats from Opta: "Andy Carroll has scored more Premier League goals against Manchester City than versus any other team (4). City have won none of their last 10 competitive visits to Anfield, losing six. The Reds had the worst chance conversion rate in the top flight in 2011-12, scoring with just 9% of their attempts." Rodgers: I'd be a nutcase to loan out Carroll
    • 15:35 We understand that City have shifted to a 3-5-2 formation today, which is pretty unusual for them. Even more strangely, Joleon Lescott has been dropped to make way for Kolo Toure, who hasn't looked convincing for a long time now. Though it could just as easily be a 4-2-3-1. We will see. Mancini anticipates tough afternoon
    • 15:25 The Reds seem to be facing a real uphill battle here: their season got off to a terrible start as they were beaten 3-0 last weekend, and indeed they've picked up just 18 points in the 20 top flight matches they've played in 2012. Liverpool's 2011/12 fixtures
    • 15:20 Brendan Rodgers starts with teenage starlet Raheem Sterling up front - a massive occasion for the 17-year-old, who only made his first start for the Reds in the Europa League on Thursday. City have an equally intriguing starting line-up with both Tevez and Balotelli on from the start. Photo of Raheem Sterling

  2. Mankini "nous tactics" my #$%$ Liverpool outplayed them all the way through, it was bad mistakes from Liverpool city managed a draw. Skrtels back pass was a howler, should've realised the troll from argentina would be lurking! Hopefully they will learn from this?

  3. Comment 355, oh come on, Rodwell made a terrific challenge which he was unlucky to be penalized for as the ball bounced off his feet. How you can claim it was a red-card when it wasn't even a free kick is beyond me!

  9. Main point is............. Liverpool scored two goal of the month candidates..... City scored from 2 Liverpool mistakes.........and Liverpool took the lead twice. City were last seasons Champions and we played them off the park, after 2 games with more players to come in and 2 waiting to get their first game in the stand. People quoting what Liverpool or LFC fans have said are guilty of thier own mockery. Proclaiming how we say we'll win the league blah blah blah how Liverpool used to be blah blah blah . Thats you saying it not us. We're just enjoying seeing Kennys team being turned into a proper side with better signings and a better system the fans can see this, which is why our support was more enthusiastic. Chelsea last season under AVB was like a graveyard. Well do well this season without being an arabs or russians play thing. Bravo to Rodgers for having the nuts to play sterling. Kenny must be watching with his head in his hands at what he could have achieved, had he been up with the times, and not stuck in the 90's Like the majority of trolls on yahoo forums

  13. I agree with most of the comments on here written by the pool supporters, what an uplifting performance from our team today the atmosphere at the ground for todays match was something else. We may not have won as we should have done or deserved to but the players, all of them played well. Mistakes were made when it came to both of goals that Man City scored but that's football and in every game you'll watch this season and every season you will see mistakes being made by all team. It may not have been the result we were looking for but hopefully this will kick start our season and be the start of how we intend to go about playing throughout the rest of the season and hopefully challenge. So glad that the young man Sterling got his chance to start and showed how promising he is and what a good player we all know he can and will become. BR needs to play him more even though he is just 17, this boy will add so much to the first team and encourage the rest of the team to up their game. It's only the second game but let's hope that we can use this game as a launching pad kick on from here.

354 Why put a cap on team spending ?Let the rich teams do what the can and those without stay where they are. We live in a world of competition. We want to know who is richer amoung the Abromoviches, Glazers,Sheiks, etc. Those who cant stand the heat should get out of the kitchen. Go to lower divisions where you belong.

  15. 356, I'm sorry but you're talking #$%$ Firstly I said you deserved to win or were the better team today and secondly if you credit LFC's supporters with having the intelligence to realise it'll take time to get anywhere then you must have been living in a cave for the last 25 years. I have had that exact argument (saying you needed time) with some Liverpool fans at work and both said they don't need it because they're going to win the league this season. Just like they've been saying for the last God knows how many years like 99% of other Liverpool fans. THAT is deluded and arrogant and you can bet your bottom dollar poor old Brendan will be out of work in record time if they don't win loads of games in a row and your fickle lot will be crying for that hopeless failure Princess Kenny again. I told you before it's YOUR fans who ruin things for you because the majority are deluded. Right, I'll get off now, you've probably got some bins to rifle through.

  16. i don't understand some people already saying a certain team will win the title just by the one or two games played this season. Its far too early folks there are more dramas , twists and turns , disappointments coming before the real winner emerges. Some of us have been watching the premier league for years. Wait and see

  17. 354, Gary: That's all well and good but at the time Liverpool were one of the richest clubs in Britain and Europe, they also spent more than United, Arsenal and Chelsea in two out of three seasons recently. Also are you suggesting that if Liverpool now had the chance to get the sort of money City and Chelsea have that they'd say no because it wasn't fair or something? WE are the mugs by buying tickets/season tickets to fuel stupid money on players and their wages, if people voted with their feet the clubs would soon learn. Can't blame the players either, nobody in their right mind would turn the money they earn down!
