    • 90+5' Full-time. Saints are off the mark, finally, with a bang! A goal down at the break, but four goals in the second half give Nigel Adkins' side their first win back in the Premier League. Thanks for joining me today! Follow me on Twitter @liamhappe
    • 90+5' That earned Guzan a yellow card.
    • 90+4' GOAL! Lambert gets his second after dinking a ball over to Mayuka who was brought down by Guzan. Stonewall decision, superb penalty from the striker. 4-1!
    • 90+3' PENALTY SOUTHAMPTON!
    • 90+2' Comfortable stuff from Saints as they see this out.
    • 90+1' Lallana showboating lures the free-kick on the right from a frustrated Bennett.
    • 90' Four minutes of time for Saints to see off after the 90.
    • 89' Ramirez wins back a lost cause for Southampton. He has been an absolute treasure today.
    • 88' Villa win a fifth corner. Need something here, really, to provoke a tense finale.
    • 87' Almost another big chance for Saints to truly wrap the win up but Mayuka is offside receiving Ward-Prowse's through pass.
    • 86' Have to say, the withdrawal of Ireland has cost Villa here. Not sure if it was injury or tactical but they have surrendered control of the middle of the park without the player who was involved in most of their counters, too.
    • 85' Mayuka squeezes into the box from the right and fires low, straight at Guzan.
    • 84' Westwood tries to pick out Bent with a cross but it goes out for a goal kick.
    • 82' Ramirez with another peach to find Lallana in the box, but the skipper tries to cut inside Clark which allows the defender to get a foot on the ball and end the attack. Big chance there, Lallana should have just let rip.
    • 81' Villa win a dangerous free-kick 20 yards out and central, but Bent bends it over the bar.
    • 80' That is all six substitutions used up.
    • 79' Davis, unlike Puncheon, is definitely feeling it. Another good reception for the departure of the hard-working midfielder as 17-year-old James Ward-Prowse comes on for the final 11 minutes.
    • 78' Now Mayuka is picked out on the edge of the box for the second time in a minute and he lashes a better effort wide.
    • 77' Mayuka scuffs an effort at the end of prolonged Saints pressure.
    • 75' Southampton have enjoyed 60% of the possession after trialing that statistic in the first half.
    • 74' Puncheon gets a standing ovation as he is replaced by Emmanuel Mayuka. A little curious as the winger was showing no signs of fading.
    • 73' Replays show the finish took a clip off the outstretched leg of Clark which added gleam, but nonetheless great play by both Lambert and Punch.
    • 72' GOAL! It's three! Puncheon with an absolute beauty after being cleverly put into the box by Lambert. He pulled back at the byline and found a gap to power daylight into Saints' lead. 3-1!
    • 71' Villa win their third corner of the game to Saints' one on the break. From it, Benteke again meets it well but it's blocked by the sea of red shirts in the danger zone.
    • 70' It looks for a moment that Puncheon has put Lallana clean through but the flag belatedly comes up.
    • 69' Puncheon cuts inside from the right and just finds the wrong side of the far post with a lovely curling placed finish. Punch has grown into this game after a poor start.
    • 67' Double sub from Paul Lambert as Joe Bennett is on for Lichaj in a like-for-like at LB while Bannan makes way for Gabby Agbonlahor. That's all three changes used up.
    • 66' Neat skills by Vlaar to get away from the pressing of Lallana and clear his lines.
    • 65' Lambert almost put through for a possible second by Schneiderlin but the ball just runs past him and to Guzan.
    • 63' GOAL! Ramirez threads the ever-advancing Clyne in and that's a cool finish across Guzan! Game. On. Its. Head. 2-1!
    • 62' Puncheon ghosts past Lichaj but Vlaar intercepts the square ball towards Lambert.
    • 61' Lowton with another fine delivery but Gazzaniga does well to take full command and catch.
    • 60' Lallana narrowly over with a decent half-volley. The home team's tails are up now.
    • 59' That's his third of the season and deserved over the course of the match so far.
    • 58' Scratch that, GOAL! Equaliser as Lambert lashes a great strike beyond Guzan for 1-1!
    • 57' No Premier League home side has scored so far today.
    • 55' Clyne with another surge forward with similar results.
    • 54' Lambert goes to ground under pressure from Clark from the ensuing free-kick but the referee is far from convinced.
    • 53' Lichaj catches Schneiderlin as he looks to set Puncheon free along the right flank and earns a yellow card for his troubles.
    • 52' Clyne makes an encouraging run into the middle and makes it as far as the 'D' where Clark calmly takes the ball from him.
    • 50' Villa win another corner from the initial one, the second leading to Benteke heading off-target.
    • 49' Ireland has been replaced by Ashley Westwood while Frazer Richardson is on in place for Danny Fox for the hosts.
    • 48' But Villa have another chance here as Benteke centres low for Bent only for Gazzaniga to make himself big and put it out for a corner.
    • 47' Puncheon has an early crack at goal. Low and on target, it's held by Guzan. Both sides have made half-time changes...
    • 46' We are back underway at St Mary's.
    • 45+2' There's the half-time whistle. Darren Bent's finish is the difference between the two sides and Saints' early season frustrations look set to continue. Do YOU think they can find a way back or has Paul Lambert finally got Villa onto a run of form? Let me know via Twitter @liamhappe
    • 45+1' Just the one minute added on at the end of the first half.
    • 45' Yoshida prevents Bent from collecting Benteke's square pass on the edge of the area.
    • 44' Lallana whips the free-kick in from the left but Bent hacks it away.
    • 43' Nonetheless, the referee has seen enough to book Vlaar.
    • 41' Lambert goes down rather belatedly under pressure from Vlaar as the two chase a long punt upfield.
    • 40' The game already beginning to shift Villa's way on the strength of that one finish. The Villa fans are in full song and the hosts are suffering from a little negative reaction to going behind. That needs to be addressed quickly.
    • 38' Villa have not won away since a trip to Molineux on January 21st.
    • 37' Almost straight from kick-off, Puncheon dribbles a shot just wide which nonetheless had Guzan convinced enough to see it all the way past the post.
    • 36' Saints were beginning to enjoy more attacking possession but were caught out there and just weren't awake enough to clear the danger long before Ireland put the ball forward again.
    • 35' GOAL! Bent reacts well amidst static defending to latch onto Ireland's scuffed half-volley and poke the opener beyond the keeper. 0-1.
    • 34' Rodallega has put Fulham ahead against Wigan. Keep an eye on all the scores here: Premier League LIVE
    • 33' Ramirez scoops a ball onto the run of Lallana, who was offside.
    • 32' Ireland crosses from the right where Bannan fluffs his lines with the volley finish. Well wide.
    • 31' Lambert heads a Puncheon cross back across goal where Lallana has a cheeky crack with an overhead kick. It goes straight into the clutch of Guzan.
    • 30' This match is beginning to open up but just lacks the quality ball or finish to break the deadlock.
    • 29' Lambert tries to bring the ball down in the Villa danger zone but Bent of all people is back to intervene.
    • 28' Fonte adds to the pairing's positive resume by timing a challenge perfectly to keep Lichaj's dangerous cross from reaching the six yard box.
    • 27' Ireland tries to pick out Benteke's run but Yoshida cuts it out. He has looked extremely good so far alongside Fonte.
    • 25' Ramirez floats a ball in from the right, Clark does well to get it away.
    • 24' Just the one goal so far in the other 3pm kick-offs as Sunderland have taken the lead at Upton Park. Premier League: LIVE
    • 23' Bannan closes down a Puncheon delivery from the right.
    • 22' It was a good challenge by Ireland on Davis to create the opportunity.
    • 21' Fonte with a great sliding challenge to prevent Bent from racing through as Saints lose their focus in their own half momentarily.
    • 20' The 19th minute draws the now-traditional chants and applause from the away fans for Stilian Petrov, who wears shirt 19 for Villa.
    • 19' Ramirez has a dig from 20 yards and it's wide of the far post. He scored eight goals in Serie A last season.
    • 18' Puncheon caught in possession as he tracks back but does enough to stop Lichaj capitalising. Looks like it may have gone out for a corner but goal kick is given.
    • 17' Davis listens to the pleas of the home fans and shooooots, but from distance he can't get close to Guzan's goal.
    • 16' Bannan the man with the delivery and Yoshida on his full debut rising tallest.
    • 15' Villa send everyone up for a free-kick just inside the Saints half but it's early cleared.
    • 14' Fox heads an early ball across goal to Lambert, who heads off-target.
    • 13' Puncheon looks to enter the box from the right but is outnumbered.
    • 12' Good cross from Lowton but Gazzaniga is alert and makes the catch.
    • 11' Lambert cuts inside from the left on the break but slips as he tries his luck from outside the box and the effort goes miles over.
    • 10' Good burst forward down the centre by El Ahmadi but his attempt to slip Holman through on the far side is poor.
    • 8' Benteke gives away a foul on Yoshida.
    • 7' Guzan gets more ball time soon after as Schneiderlin lumps an aimless loft into the keeper's reach.
    • 6' Almost a chance for the big signing Ramirez as he works a give-and-go with Lambert which Guzan reads well and rushes out to claim. Nice move that.
    • 5' Once again Villa lose their way when going long: a raking pass from the back is too heavy for Bent and it's a goal kick.
    • 4' Lowton is unable to keep a cross-field pass in and Saints have a defensive throw.
    • 3' Benteke meanwhile with some decent hold-up play as Villa begin their first advance of the match.
    • 2' Puncheon with a low cross from the right early on which cannot pick out another red shirt. Encouraging start from the newly-promoted side.
    • 1' Southampton kick off the first half.
    • 15:00 The teams are on the pitch and kick-off is moments away - last call for predictions! Get some bragging rights if you are spot-on as I will publish good tips here on the commentary. Send them to @liamhappe on Twitter.
    • 14:55 Aston Villa have the joint-worst disciplinary record so far in the Premier League with Liverpool with nine yellow cards and one red.
    • 14:50 Southampton have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League (six).
    • 14:45 The early kick-off has just finished 3-0 to Everton away at Swansea, which puts the in-form Toffees second on goal difference behind Chelsea having played that game extra. Read our match report
    • 14:40 Aston Villa have won three and lost none of the last five Premier League meetings with Southampton, though the most recent of these matches was in April 2005. Villa have won none of their last 10 Premier League away games.
    • 14:35 Paul Lambert: “I (gave Ron Vlaar the captain’s armband) to let Darren (Bent) concentrate on his goal-scoring and I decided on Ron because I knew he was the right person to do it. He can handle it on and off the pitch. Darren was great, he had no problem with it. It releases the pressure of it and he can concentrate on scoring.”
    • 14:30 Nigel Adkins: “It’s been good as we’ve had an excellent week on the training ground. I think the players have applied themselves really well and there’s been a great mentality. We were in on Sunday morning and we de-briefed the game then drawn a line underneath Arsenal and we’ve trained very well this week in preparation for Aston Villa.
    • 14:25 Ramirez STARTS for Southampton. Yoshida also to make his full debut. On the Villa front, Benteke unsurprisingly also starts after winning over the fans early on in his Midlands career.

  16. I remember that opening match against Man City. The Saints were NOT overawed and showed plenty of attacking ability. Will not be an easy match for the Villans. Tough one to call, as both teams need a win. Saints introducing new signings that will want to make an impact. Hopefully Benteke can again be a spark. Tactics will be interesting to watch. UTV!!!
