    • 90+1' Henriquez goes agonisingly close as he dinks a shot just over the crossbar.
    • 90' Again the delivery is poor from Maloney, and there will be three added minutes at the end of this match.
    • 89' Wigan win another free kick outwide and Maloney will whip this into the box once more...
    • 88' Westwood comes off as Gary Gardner is introduced late on for Villa.
    • 87' A fine delivery comes over from Maloney, but Kone cannot meet the ball cleanly as he challenges with Guzan and he ends up heading wide.
    • 86' Bennett is down with cramp now as he continues to struggle, and Lambert may have to make his final change pretty quickly.
    • 85' Can Wigan find a late goal as they press forward through McArthur? He runs the ball out of play, so it's a no for now.
    • 83' Espinoza continues to provide excellent width for Wigan out on the left, and he whips over another fine cross which Kone cannot get on the end of.
    • 82' Boyce fouls Dawkins, and there is some desperate defending late on.
    • 81' It continues to be end-to-end stuff at the DW Stadium as Wigan and Villa almost take it in turns to launch an attack.
    • 79' What a chance for Wigan! James McArthur coolly sidefoots a volley against the crossbar from the edge of the Villa box as a deep cross comes over from Espinoza! That was very unlucky.
    • 78' Lowton is brushed off the ball by Espinoza, and Villa continue to attack with both sides pressing forward.
    • 77' Westwood whips over a testing delivery from the right flank, but it runs straight out of play and is far too deep.
    • 75' Martinez is on the edge of his technical area now, waving his players forward desperately in search of a winning end to their campaign.
    • 73' Jordan Bowery comes on for Agbonlahor now as Lambert makes a second change.
    • 71' Now James McCarthy is booked for throwing the ball away after challenging with Simon Dawkins.
    • 69' Boyce tussles with Weimann and is booked for being overly physical in the challenge - he's absolutely furious about it!
    • 68' Gomez and Watson trot of with Fraser Fyvie and Angelo Henriquez coming on for Wigan.
    • 67' Scharner makes an impeccable intervention as he slides in to stop Delph in his tracks, and it's a fine challenge.
    • 65' It's all to play for now with both sides pressing forward in search of a third goal.
    • 63' There's a very good chance for Delph as Villa pile forward once more, but he shoots over the bar after creating room for the shot.
    • 61' That really was a quite stunning volleyed goal from Vlaar, who showed incredible composure to take the ball down and find the finish.
    • 60' GOAL! Vlaar takes down a deep free kick from Ashley Westwood with an impeccable touch before slamming a stunning volley into the top corner of the bet, beating Al Habsi comprehensively! It's a wonderful goal, and it's all square once more.
    • 60' Sylla departs as Simon Dawkins comes on for Villa, and he will slot into midfield.
    • 59' What a chance for Boyce! Espinoza does superbly to jink his way to the left byline before dinking over a precise cross, but Boyce volleys against the crossbar from six yards out!
    • 57' Villa break forward at pace with Agbonlahor darting clear, but he lacks composure and fails to test Al Habsi.
    • 56' Baker clips Kone with a very cynical challenge, and he is very lucky not to get booked there.
    • 55' Wigan keep possession deep inside their own half and relish just having the ball after a fine spell from Villa.
    • 53' STAT: Shaun Maloney has scored three and assisted four goals in his last nine appearances for Wigan in all competitions.
    • 52' Villa are keeping the ball superbly at the moment in the Wigan half, and the hosts cannot get on it.
    • 51' Ben Watson unleashes a fierce drive from range, but it's well handled by Guzan in the Villa goal.
    • 49' Already relegated Wigan need a point from this game to avoid this being their worst ever points tally in a Premier League season (currently 35 points). They won 36 points in 2009-10.
    • 47' Neither manager has deemed it necessary to make any changes at the break, and the sun is now shining at the ground.
    • 46' The second half is under way at the DW Stadium.
    • 45+3' The half-time whistle goes seconds after the third goal at the DW Stadium, and Wigan lead Aston Villa 2-1 courtesy of Baker's own goal after Boyce had cancelled out Bent's early opener.
    • 45+2' OWN GOAL! Nathan Baker turns the ball into the back of his own net inadvertently after shots from Golobart and Watson are both cleared off the line by Villa players. It's a harsh way for Villa to fall behind on the stroke of half-time.
    • 45+1' Wigan are piling forward in their droves at the end of the first half.
    • 45' Weimann races through the Wigan half with a fine run before shooting well wide, and there will be three added minutes at the end of the first half.
    • 44' STAT: Villa have won 26 of their 40 points (65%) against the other sides in the bottom half of the Premier League table this season.
    • 43' Villa continue to keep the ball very effectively, and Lambert will be generally very pleased.
    • 42' That challenge from Lowton was on Roman Golobart, who is limping now.
    • 41' Matthew Lowton has made a few poor challenges so far this afternoon, and he's booked for the latest mistimed tackle.
    • 39' Yacouba Sylla has been bright for Villa early on, and he drives forward from deep before shooting wide.
    • 38' Westwood whips over another devilish delivery from the left, but again it is Boyce who heads away.
    • 37' Al Habsi makes another strange decision as he palms away a cross that he could have easily caught.
    • 36' Boyce heads away powerfully from inside the Wigan box as another delivery is whipped over by Westwood.
    • 35' It's all Villa now as the visitors attack relentlessly and camp inside the Wigan half with Delph instrumental.
    • 33' Delph jinks inside two challenges before firing a low shot towards goal, but it's blocked away.
    • 32' The free kick is completely wasted by Villa, and Kone almost catches them out by sprinting straight down the other end, only to fire high and wide!
    • 31' Watson clatters into Lowton on the edge of the Wigan box, and the Villa man earns his side a free kick.
    • 29' At the other end, Jordi Gomez tries his luck to no better effect as he also locates the stand behind the goal!
    • 27' Delph and Westwood keep the ball well before the latter fires a wild shot over the crossbar from range.
    • 26' Roberto Martinez's side are keeping the ball far more effectively now after their equalising goal.
    • 25' What a moment that was for Boyce, who is the skipper for the day and the club's longest serving player.
    • 23' Wigan have failed to win any of their last six home games in the Premier League against Aston Villa (D2 L4).
    • 22' It really was a cracking finish from Boyce, and all Villa's early good work is spoiled.
    • 21' GOAL! Emmerson Boyce levels the scores for Wigan with a powerful header after ghosting into the Villa box to meet Roger Espinoza's pinpoint cross from the left flank! It's a fine goal, and it's all square now at the DW Stadium!
    • 19' There is a tremendous ovation for the visitors' former captain as the entire Villa end wear their Stan Petrov masks and give a standing ovation for the 19th minute of the match.
    • 17' It's all Villa in the opening stages, and Wigan are very slow to get going in this match.
    • 15' There are vociferous appeals for handball as Jordi Gomez's pass hits Ron Vlaar on the arm in the box, but he did not know much about that! Referee Neil Swarbrick is not impressed.
    • 14' Kone should score! Maloney slips a delightful through ball beyond Baker and into the path of Kone, but he stumbles over the ball six yards out with Vlaar for company and ends up squandering a very good opportunity.
    • 13' Espinoza brings the ball forward again for Wigan down the left, but he's lacking options every time.
    • 12' Kone looks to race in beyond Vlaar, which he does, but Guzan is off his line quickly to clear.
    • 11' Villa have won five of their previous nine games and they are playing with a real swagger this afternoon.
    • 10' Guzan makes a fine catch in his area as he is challenged by Kone, and he finds Weimann with a huge punt upfield.
    • 9' STAT: Wigan defeated Aston Villa 3-0 away earlier this season; the Latics have only defeated Reading home and away this campaign in the Premier League.
    • 7' Play is delayed for a minute as a flare is removed from a goalmouth, and that is not what you expect at the DW Stadium.
    • 6' Suspended striker Christian Benteke (14 goals, one assist) has contributed towards half of Aston Villa’s 30 Premier League goals in 2013, but Bent has shown his class already.
    • 5' GOAL! Darren Bent cuts inside from the left and fires a clinical finish beyond Al Habsi after latching on to a through ball from Agbonlahor, and he scores early in the match having been given a rare start by Paul Lambert!
    • 4' Ali Al Habsi palms the ball wide pretty powerfully as he dives to his right to make the save, and he probably could have kept hold of that.
    • 3' Villa win a dangerous free kick 25 yards out as Weimann is fouled by Scharner.
    • 2' The crowd are still buzzing after the FA Cup trophy was paraded prior to kick-off, and the flags are out in force.
    • 1' The first half is under way at the DW Stadium!
    • 15:55 The players jog out at the DW Stadium ahead of kick off, and we're all set...
    • 15:50 The bookies have priced this match as follows: Wigan (6/5), Aston Villa (11/5), Draw (12/5)

    • 15:40 Roberto Martinez: "Sometimes when a club is relegated, it brings chaos, but this is the best we have ever been. At the moment, it's not my priority. My priority is to prepare well for the game and make sure we we have a really good time with the fans. On Monday we will celebrate with the FA Cup around the town. Then we will need a few days before sitting down with the chairman next week to decide what's best for Wigan Athletic to move forward."
    • 15:35 Paul Lambert's young lions will have to cope without top scorer Christian Benteke, with Darren Bent handed a rare start in attack. This could well be Roberto Martinez's final match for Wigan, and he makes a few changes for the match.
    • 15:30 The referee for this afternoon's encounter is Neil Swarbrick from Lancashire. He has yet to show a red card from 17 Premier League matches this season.
    • 15:25 The teams are in - Wigan: Al Habsi, Watson, Boyce, McCarthy, Espinoza, Golobart, Scharner, Maloney, McArthur, Gomez, Kone. Subs: Robles, Henriquez, Mustoe, Redmond, Campabadal, Di Santo, Fyvie. /// Aston Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Bennett, Westwood, Delph, Sylla, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Bent. Subs: Given, El Ahmadi, Dawkins, Gardner, Bowery, N’Zogbia, Herd.
    • 15:20 With Wigan having already joined Reading and QPR in being relegated to the Championship and Aston Villa's top-flight status secured, this match has little more to it than pride for the two sides.

  1. What is this this yahoo this was last season.PLEASE GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER

From Greg, on Sun 27 Oct 17:22
  2. Lambert has said next season will be another season of struggle, so that means its going to be a summer of no spending and selling our best players, Benteke, Weimann, and Bent will all be sold, so could Westwood and Lowton, there is no way Benteke or Weimann will get new contracts so they will have to be sold, Bent is already as good as out the door, the three of them should fetch in the region of £35-40 Million, but don't expect Lerner to give any of the money to Lambert, unfortunately Lambert will have to buy from Pound land not Harrods and we will have to sit and watch another season of survival football.

From craig, on Sun 19 May 22:34
  3. Why do I bother? Sick and tired of Lambert's false optimism. A good leap up the table was on offer here, and what do they do? they draw, and remain just about where they are now. Just safe! Lack-lustre and boring. Maybe someone will spend some money in the close season? Some hopes!

From DSM, on Wed 15 May 10:33
  16. I expect Wigan to be victorious on their final home game of their FA Cup winning season. The players must win & will win for their fans. Well done Wigan but also commiserations. You are sure to bounce back to the EPL the following season, but I expect without Martinez. Wigan 3 - 1 Villa

From A Yahoo! user, on Tue 14 May 23:21
  17. Great we stay up for another season, message to the board and Randy Lerner "DO NOT SELL BENTEKE" resist any offer he is a player we need to keep at all cost, and build a team around, if the board sell him what message does that send to all Villa fans?, Lerner has escaped this season thanks to the Benteke signing, and needs to win back the Villa fans, Lerner also needs to back Lambert in the summer and get some quality into the squad so we aren't in this position come next season.
