    Time:90'
    • Southampton
    • Sunderland
    • 90+4' That's it. The referee blows for full time, and the two managers exchange lots of genial slaps to the face. Both will have reason to be both frustrated and relieved.
    • 90+3' Osvaldo moves down the inside left channel, and Lambert almost slips Jay Rodriguez in. A minute left.
    • 90+2' More Southampton pressure, but Sunderland haven't lost their focus. Admirably they don't seem to have given up hope of their own victory, and now come forward with Adam Johson on the left, but Ji wastes the ball.
    • 90+1' Four minutes left, and still Southampton press. Ramirez knocks a flat ball towards Osvaldo, but it's just too strong. Di Canio seems to be complaining about his lot to his coaching staff, who look properly fed up.
    • 90' Corner for Southampton, and Fonte is back in the box. This time, Gardner heads away, and then Ji. Southampton are after the winner now.
    • 88' GOAL! Southampton equalise! A great, slightly curling cross forward is put in and Fonte clips his header right past Westwood. That had been coming all half, and they will be incredibly relieved.
    • 88' Osvaldo now wins a free kick instead of giving one away, bundled over with his back to goal, fifty yards from goal.
    • 87' Ramirez trips an advancing Johnson, on the corner of Southampton's penalty area. Larsson takes, swinging the ball in, straight into the wall. A waste of a rare opportunity.
    • 86'
    • 86'
    • 85' Osvaldo is not playing intelligently. He dives in late as a defender clears, just catching an ankle. He should really have been sent off, but Mason shows mercy.
    • 83' Osvaldo has been booked for fouling Diakite, tripping him as he headed the ball back to his 'keeper. Seemed very harsh.
    • 82' Ji expertly controls a high ball on the right, passes inside to Vaughan. Vaughan fires miles over, and Boruc is miffed that he's not being given the ball back.
    • 81' Another chance, and another penalty claim, not without merit. Lambert, again at the back post, heads across to Ramirez. O'Shea clambers all over him, and has his arm around his neck, preventing his header from finding the target.
    • 80' Ji has a slight knock to his head, but he stays on the pitch. The game is really running out life, and Alitdore gives away a foul. Sunderland won't mind how bitty the game has become.
    • 79' Sunderland break with Ji on the right, but his pass across to Alitdore is appaling, and the move breaks down. Moments later Sunderland win a free kick just inside their half after a cynical challenge from Giaccherini.
    • 78' Gardner, already booked, bodychecks Ramirez just as he's about to get to the box. Ludicrously, the referee neither books Gardner again, nor does he call for a foul.
    • 77' Southampton now back to the situation we've seen most of the second half, with the ball, in Sunderland's half. Again, Diakite is there to head clear.
    • 76' Sunderland with a rare moment of possession. The ball played across defence and midfield until Larsson kicks it as hard as he can across, and out of, the pitch. They soon win the ball back, though.
    • 75' Lovren is now down for some treatment, and he'll be keener to get the game started again than Sunderland will be. Lovren has now gone off for further help, but it doesn't look a serious injury.
    • 74' A neck injury, after challenging for a ball against Lambert.
    • 74'
    • 74' Lambert takes, and sends the ball a few yards over. Not very good at all.
    • 72' Little of note in the last few minutes as the teams get ready for the closing stages of the match. Southampton have most of the possession, though, and Ramirez wins a free kick close to the area after O'Shea barges him to the ground, as is his way.
    • 70' Altidore has gone off for treatment, meanwhile Wanyama receives treatment to a wrist injury.
    • 69' Lallana is replaced by Gaston Ramirez. The corner finds Lambert, but again nothing results, with the exception of the injured neck of Altidore.
    • 68' Clyne picks the ball up from Lallana on the left, and scoots past Gardner. Diakite comes across smartly to block the danger, and Southampton have a corner.
    • 67' There are apparently 29,596 fans in the crowd today. Do with that information what you will.
    • 66' Another long shot from Southampton. Rodriguez finds himself in space on the right hand edge of the D, but he slices over again. The pressure is on, and time is running out, but a bit of consideration is what they need.
    • 65' It's almost total control for Southampton, altough Fonte was one-on-one with Altidore, and lucky to win the challenge. Southampton need to keep their focus across the pitch. They start to attack again now.
    • 64' Another header for Lambert. Chambers crosses, again. Lambert, at the back post, again, heads at the keeper, again. It's like Groundhog day, but with a very short timespan and a very small set of events.
    • 63' The game has calmed down after the opening pressure from Southampton. Sunderland will hope to get some confidence back, but it's looking unlikely.
    • 62' Vaughan ambles forward, lays the ball off to Gardner, whose high cross results in a foul. Altidore stood in the way as Boruc attempted to jump towards the ball. Bad keeping, but a definite foul.
    • 60' The corner is finally cleared, but Southampton remain the team in charge. Meanwhile, Larsson has been booked for dissent, annoyed Lee Mason didn't whistle when Celustka was injured.
    • 59' Southampton have vastly improved, but they do appear still prone to falling on the floor at the worst times. Celustka is hobbling around the pitch, lookin truly uncomforable. Maybe because of that Southampton are able to tee up Lambert, outside the box but unmarked, whose excellent shot is palmed behind for a corner.
    • 58' Flip! An accurate cross to Rodriguez, from Osvaldo, means the man called Jay has a header just a couple of yards out, and he inexplicably cushions it back to the keeper!
    • 57' A few meaty challenges, and the ball breaks forward. Diakite has to awkwardly pass back to Westwood, who then even more awkwardly volleys high and wide, away from danger.
    • 56' Osvaldo holds the ball up well for a moment, until Sunderland crowd him out and break forward. Apparently Osvaldo is the 59th Italian to play in the Pemier League. The 8th most represented nationality in this division. Well.
    • 55' Johnson cuts inside from the right, but his shot from distance is way over. If the goals had been a lot higher, we might have seen more goals today. But they're not.
    • 54' David Vaughan replaces Jack Colback as Di Canion rejigs his midfield and defence.
    • 53' Another Southampton attack. Lallana lays the ball off, just outside the D, to Ward-Prowse. Unfortunately for them, he slices the ball way over.
    • 52' Lallana is so close to an equaliser. A throw in finds Lambert on the edge of the box, who heads the ball across to the midfielder. It bounces up, and Lallana has time to wait, consider his future, and volleys the ball just wide. The best chance of the second half.
    • 51' Nothing doing with the corner, as a foul is given away by Southampton. Westwood takes the free kick, which Southampton swiftly win possession from.
    • 50' Fonte's deflected cross is punted clear by Colback, and Southampton have started brighter in this half. Lallana wins a corner with some close footwork on the right wing.
    • 49' Osvaldo clips a ball into the stands. So, that's £15 million per one clipped ball into the stands.
    • 48' A neat turn by Lallana leads to a one-two in the area, and just as Lallana is about to shoot, Diakite's late, sliding tackle wins the balls and the danger passes. Diakite doesn't look especially good with the ball, but has made some excellent interceptions.
    • 46' An early ball over the top finds Ji but his scuffed volley finds the keeper already horizontal, waiting for the ball.
    • 46' Dani Osvaldo makes his debut, wearing a ponytail, and Nathaniel Clyne is on, replacing Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw. For Sunderland, Ji Dong-Won replaces Stephan Sessegnon, who was largely anonymous.
    • 46' The second half is about to begin, with Southampton looking to improve vastly, and Sunderland hoping to maintain a clean sheet.
    • 45+2' That's half time, and yet more people using their mouth and vocal chords to enunciate 'booooooooo' at the referee as he leaves the pitch.
    • 45+1' Southampton want another penalty, and this time it seems like the referee made the wrong choice. Lallana backs into O'Shea after picking up a Lambert knock-down. O'Shea grapples, and Lallana slips back. It probably should have been a penalty, and there are some boos.
    • 45' Diakite heads out a long ball forward for a throw. From their, Southampton play calmly in front of the opposition's defence, until a chipped ball to the left wing drifts out. This is poor.
    • 44' Di Canio is having a discussion on the bench, covering his mouth so we can't lip read. I wonder what he was saying. I'd hazard a guess it was about the football, but I couldn't say exactly what. What do you think?
    • 43' Rodriguez chases deep to rob Altidore, who claims but doesn't get a foul, and the ball is launched forward to start an attack. Depressingly, a ball is passed sideways for Fonte to take a long range strike, which trundles along the ground.
    • 41' Some pressure in the top right of the pitch, by Southampton's penalty area, ends up as a throw for Southampton. This has not been a hugely edifying spectacle for those trying to sell sponsorship for the Premier League.
    • 40' Another cross finds Lambert, and another header from Lambert finds itself too high and wide. Sunderland should, though, be concerned about how many balls have started to find their way to him of late.
    • 39' As half time draws closer, Southampton appear to have run out of ideas, and Sunderland seem content with the notion that any kind of attack will cause a Southampton flap. Having said that, a cross from the left finds Lambert climbing at the back post, but his header is a couple of yards over the bar.
    • 37' Wanyama toe-pokes a ball across midfield. Apparently Wanyama's passing isn't highly rated by other managers in Scotland, and he hasn't exactly reminded anyone of Paul Scholes or Xavi today.
    • 36' Southampton want a penalty! Ward-Prowse's curling free kick from the left gives the chance for Fonte to dramatically find his way to the ground under very little attention. It looked like the right decision.
    • 35' Lovren doesn't seem to have adjusted well after his move from Lyon. Birthday boy Yoshida is missing out, and you'd imagine he'd giving a better performance.
    • 34' The free kick isn't properly cleared at the first attempt, but Lambert fails to control the ball, and now Sunderland attack through Johnson on the left wing, earning a throw in. The ball finds its way to Altidore after a neat pass from Sessegnon, but he can't find the time or space to shoot.
    • 32' Shaw is down and experiencing consternation after a deliberate block from Gardner. You could hear the clump, and as a result of the volume and the violence, he's blocked. He's only just back from suspension.
    • 31' Southampton break down the left, and the ref earns a sarcastic expression of praise and estimation by calling for a foul. They waste their possession, and we start again. On the side of the pitch, Di Canio is looking emotive, but not constructive.
    • 30' Now Lambert gets a wee bit physical. The ball rolls to Diakite, and Lambert nudges him from the side to introduce him to the turf, skidding across the ground on his behind. He's not seriously injured.
    • 29' Other acceptable manners are hand gestures, and whistling. Meanwhile, Rodriguez lays the ball off to Chambers to cross from the right, but Southampton confidently clear. Their next long ball drifts out for a Sunderland through on the right. They're not playing impressively, that's for sure.
    • 28'
    • 27' Ward-Prowse nibbles at Colback, and then pulls him to the ground, earning himself a speaking to and a yellow card from the referee.
    • 26' The ball runs to Giaccherini, just inside the box aftter Luke Shaw fails to escort the ball out in the presence of Sessegnon. The Italian sscores 3 rugby points, but no goals.
    • 25' Nicola Cortese looks on from the stands, not even threatening to break into a smile. He is almost scowling, almost bored. Is he tweeting about his feelings?
    • 24' Adam Johnson listens to Di Canio, listening as his manager leads from a list of what is either grievances or tactical instructions. It's likely to be the latter, but it could be the former, given who we're dealing with.
    • 23' What a waste! Ward-Prowse evades two defenders with an overhead flick, he stumbles and the ball runs to Rodriguez, whose shot is deflected just over. The corner ends in nothing happening, but Di Canio is fuming.
    • 21' Southampton think they should have a corner, and the crowd make their displeasure known in the accepted traditional manner of crying 'Boo!' in unison.
    • 20' Larsson takes, whipped fiercely into Boruc, diving to his right to punch away, and it's out for a goal kick. A defender really should have got to that first, and Southampton look nervous when dealing with crosses. Maybe not nervous, more incompetent.
    • 19' Sunderland attack through Altidore on the left, he plays Colback in, and his cross is deflected by Ward-Prowse's firm challenge for a corner. Colback limps away.
    • 18' Ward-Prowse finds himself with the ball, just at the byline, he curls a cross towards Lambert, just outside the six-yard box, but his firm header to the keeper's right is well saved by Westwood.
    • 18' Lallana wins a free kick after being tackled from behind from O'Shea. It's nothing serious, so there isn't a yellow card. Lambert takes, from forty yards back, to the right of the D. It hits the wall. Oh dear.
    • 16' Lallana's Cruyff turn outside Sunderland's box comes to nothing, and Sunderland hoof the ball all the way back to Boruc, and Southampton start again. After a couple of crossfield balls, Larsson' gives away a throw in.
    • 15'
    • 13' Most of the play is in midfield, but as you might expect from two sides of relatively low quality, there are absolutely no chances being made.
    • 12' Sunderland almost have a half chance, as a deflected pass loops between Boruc and Altidore, but the 'keeper has enough time to claim it without hassle.
    • 11' The two managers on the sidelines, in their technical area. Neither of them look particularly flustered at the moment, but that'll probably change as the players give them more reasons to get angry.
    • 10' Southampton now playing in Sunderland's half. Shaw's cross is cleared easily, though. Southampton win the ball back and start building again.
    • 9' A throw in on the right near Sunderland's box, and Rodriguez pressures Giaccherini into a rushed clearance on the other side of the pitch.
    • 8' Southampton have remained calm despite conceding, playing the ball across defence. Unfortunately for them the Sunderland midfield are constantly pressing, and they're rarely getting forward.
    • 7' Diakite hoofs the ball forty yards, but it was forty yards into the air. He'll hope to improve upon that throughout the game, and achieve orbit with one of the clearances.
    • 6' Southampton finally have some more of the ball. And they think they've scored! Rickie Lamberts slides a lovely through ball for Rodridguez. He calmly slots it past the keeper, and wheels away in the delight, only to find out it's disallowed for offside.
    • 4' Now it's the time for Sunderland's fans to sing. Sunderland continue to press through Colback on the left, but this time he's closed out, and Southampton have a goal kick.
    • 3' GOAL! Giaccherini scores! The free kick is headed behind by Wanyama, so Sunderland have a corner. Larsson swings the ball into the box, and the Italian, totally unmarked, stoops and heads past Boruc's dive.
    • 2' The Sunderland fans are being drowned out by those supporting Southampton. Sunderland have begun the strongest, attacking down the left through Colback, and earning a free kick.
    • 1' Right, we have kick off. Can Sunderland maintain their 0% success rate, or will they be able to get a more positive result? Southampton will hope to keep their momentum. Lovren, Wanyama and Chambers are all making their home debuts for the side. Osvaldo and his haircut watch from the bench. Southampton take the kick off.
    • 14:55 Quick, get back to the pitch, Southampton! Kick off is just five minutes away.
    • 14:50 Another Opta stat to take in, and to cause rumination, cogitation and deliberation: the last three Premier League meetings between these two sides have seen just four goals scored in total. I think we all hope for a slightly more eventful game today.

    • 14:40 Sunderland also have a different manager from that game, with Martin O'Neill finding himself with little to do in the mornings, having been replaced by Paolo Di Canio. Di Canio has motivated his side in a different way from both Adkins and Pochettino - banning soft drinks, ketchup and mayonnaise from the club, and has started using the more traditional training cones instead.
    • 14:35 In the game last season, Sunderland beat Southampton 1-0 with a Steven Fletcher goal just before half time. It appeared that Nigel Adkins simply wasn't using enough smilies on post-its to motivate his team. Presumably Mauricio Pochettino useless slightly different methods. Did you know there is no Spanish word for 'post-its'?
    • 14:30 Is Osvaldo better than Lambert? Well, as Opta point out, he scored 16 goals in Serie A for Roma last season; only Edinson Cavani (29) and Antonio Di Natale (23) scored more. Lambert scored absolutely no goals at all in Serie A. So make your own mind up.
    • 14:25 Southampton's new £15 million signing, Pablo Osvaldo, finds himself on the bench, so everyone will be waiting to see if he's any better than England hero Rickie Lambert if he comes on later. For Sunderland, Valentin Roberge is also on the bench, and that's because of an error made in the last match against Fulham.
    • 14:20 TEAMS: Southampton: Boruc, Chambers, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Wanyama, Schneiderline, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Rodriguez, Lambert... Subs: Kelvin Davis, Clyne, Steven Davis, Ramirez, Cork, Osvaldo, Hooiveld. /// Sunderland: Westwood, Celustka, O’Shea, Diakite, Colback, Johnson, Larsson. Gardner, Giaccherini, Sessegnon, Altidore... Mannone, Cabral, Wickham, Vaughan, Ji, Moberg Karlsson, Roberge
    • 14:15 Hello, and get commensurately excited for live coverage of the Premier League match between Southampton and Sunderland. That's right, it's the soon-to-be-famous S Club derby.
