    • 90+5' FT: Sunderland 0-1 Aston Villa
    • 90' Five minutes added on.
    • 90' Jack Colback and Gabby Agbonlahor booked.
    • 89' FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT. Agbonlahor vs. Colback.
    • 88' Terrible effort from Giaccherini. Off balance and over the crossbar from the edge of the box.
    • 86'
    • 85' WHAT. A. CHANCE. How does Marc Albrighton fail to make it 2-0? No left-back in sight, Albrighton roams clear, one-vs-one and he blasts over.
    • 82' Vito Mannone saves impressively from Marc Albrighton's rasping shot.
    • 81' Gus Poyet is given a stern warning by the referee. He's frustrated with Sunderland racking up 15 shots on goal.
    • 79' POSSESSION: Sunderland 67% Aston Villa 33%
    • 76' SUB (Sunderland): Roberge off; Adam Johnson on.
    • 72' Correction: Phil Bardsley cleared off the line.
    • 71' IN .. OUT! What a super goalline clearance from Sunderland's O'Shea to deny Bacuna from adding the clinching second goal.
    • 69' Aston Villa swap: Ron Vlaar off; Marc Albrighton on.
    • 66' Sub for Sunderland: Jozy Altidore comes on for Ji.
    • 65' The atmosphere is becoming extremely heated at SoL. Bookings, clashes and handbags in the last few minutes. Get your money on a red card.
    • 64' Ki has been shown a yellow for refusing to leave the park for treatment.
    • 60' This match is stretched and Aston Villa have the players to exploit the space in Sunderland's rearguard. Jack Colback, though, deserves a medal for his lung-busting runs back to sweep up.
    • 58' POSSESSION: Sunderland 70% Aston Villa 30%
    • 56' Fabian Delph (Villa) booked.
    • 51' GOOOOAL! But no goal, actually. Fabio Borini pokes the ball home after a knockdown from Steven Fletcher. Match officials chop it off for offside - but looks a wrong call there.
    • 49' Penalty shout at the Stadium of Light. Borini cross clips the body of Lowton, with his hands tucked in, but I'm not sure it makes contact.
    • 47' A 25-yard driver from Bacuna forces Mannone into a reactive save with his right-hand. That looked liked it was creeping home.
    • 45' HT substitution for Sunderland: Lee Cattermole replaced by Fabio Borini.
    • 45' Underway for the 2nd half.
    • 45' HT: Sunderland 0-1 Aston Villa
    • 42' A little half-chance for Ji inside the 18-yard-box. The ball fell to him, but he can't squeeze a shot on target.
    • 40' Aston Villa's Bacuna booked.
    • 37' Sweeping move from the Black Cats and the ball is laid back to Ki-Sung Yong who sees his shot deflected by Lowton.
    • 36' Sunderland utterly dominant in possession: 72% of the share.
    • 29' Cattermole loses possession, Benteke moves on and his shot is deflected.
    • 27' Sunderland seeing most of the ball, the most chances, the better crossing opportunities - but lack conviction. Aston Villa fluid and rampant on the counter-attack.
    • 24' Vito Mannone pulls off a strong save to deny Gabby Agbonlahor from adding a second. The Englishman cutting in from the right, controlling on his left-side, shielding away from the defender, before lashing a shot from 18 yards. Good stop.
    • 24'
    • 22' Sunderland's Giaccherini booked for simulation.
    • 17' This is end-to-end stuff. Fabian Delph races clear on goal, but drags a left-footed shot wide of Mannone's post.
    • 16' Lee Cattermole looks for redemption in the opposite box. The midfielder drags another excellent chance wide, aided by a deflection.
    • 16'
    • 15'
    • 15' GOOOOOOOAL! Aston Villa take the lead at Sunderland. Slack passing at the back, Cattermole loses possession and Agbonlahor races through, rounds Mannone, and gives Lambert's men the lead.
    • 15' POSSESSION: Sunderland 69% Aston Villa 31%
    • 14' Clever.
    • 9' Sunderland miles on top so far. Another decent move from Poyet's side: quick, dynamic and punishing basic errors in the Villa ranks.
    • 6' Brilliant opportunity for the Black Cats. Steven Fletcher drifting out to the left full-back area in acres of space, but his low shot, back across the keeper, sneaks wide.
    • 5' Shot wide from Sunderland's Lee Cattermole.
    • 4' Nothing to report so far at the Stadium of Light. Rain-sodden, squelching surface with neither team getting into second gear.
    • 15:00 Underway.
    • 14:55 The teams are out in the North East. We'll be ready for kick-off in five minutes.

    • 14:39 No Aston Villa manager has overseen a Premier League clean sheet in January since Gerard Houllier in 2011.
    • 14:35 Sunderland have scored 16 goals in the last 22 Barclays Premier League games against Villa, and only more than once in a game on one occasion.
    • 14:29 What do the managers think of the transfer window? Poyet: "We haven't had any offers for any players.", while, Lambert adds: "We might want to bring in one or two experienced ones to help the younger ones on the pitch. You think experienced players might help you in certain areas of the pitch. But sometimes the salaries are ridiculous which I don’t think this club will do again. That’s the reality."

  1. Angus all fans boo there team at sometime or another, yes a good win but I really hope Lerner doesn't think we are going to be OK and spend no money in this transfer window, we could easily lose our next 3 games and slide down the table, We need at least 2 players brought in, in this window with some experience, a CB is a must, both Baker and Clark aren't CB's, Baker is a LB, and Clark a DM, go out and get Joleon Lescott from Man City, he clearly isn't needed there, yes I know his wages would be an issue but I think we could work something out like Tottenham did with Adebayor were they pay half each, we also need a DM there are a few names Leon Britten, Lewis Holtby, or Wilson Placios, Britten would be my favourite as he would be cheaper then the other 2 and probably be able to sign him on perm ant deal.

  2. Aston Villa have been the team I have supported through thick and thin since I was eight years old in 1957(The year we last won the F.A.Cup)I think that if we want to survive in the Premiership we need to get these young players together and tell them what being part of a team is all about. No showboating is needed and for Betenke to start scoring again he needs to put more shoits in and then we would see his value soar.He will not remain a Villa player for long anyway.I have always thought great teams are not full of individual stars, but of players that compliment each other and work hard for each other. That is the only way forward.

  5. Another careless defeat,Cattermole and Giaccherini should not be considered for selection as both are useless, I would love to know what we do on thetraining ground, one thing for sure it is not playing football. Brian, Romford.

  14. The appointment of Poyet was madness. The decision is right up there with Burnley's appointment of Brian Laws several years back. It's Championship football at the Stadium of Light next season.
