New signing Patrick van Aahholt was a threat down the left-wing throughout and it was little surprise when the Dutchman broke clear of the Sunderland defence to pull the ball back for Seb Larsson to side-foot the ball home six minutes from the end. West Brom pushed hard for a winner, but with little craft in midfield it only amounted to a few scrambles in the Sunderland penalty area. After a year of relegation worries for both sides last season, a win would have been a major statement for either side. Sunderland appear to have recruited well in Jack Rodwell and van Aanholt, who were both threatening on the counter attack, while Sebastian Pocognoli offered composed defending and attacking intent on the left-hand side of the pitch for West Brom. Both sides will be able to take positives from a gripping game, but tougher tests certainly lie ahead.

West Brom and Sunderland share the points after an excellent contest at The Hawthorns ended in a 2-2 draw. A predictably tight contest started with the most unpredictable of goals as Lee Cattermole blasted in for the visitors from 25-yards out. It was a terrible start to Alan Irvine’s first game as Baggies manager, but they were given a helping hand by referee Neil Swarbrick when he awarded a penalty for Valentin Roberge’s pull on Baggies striker Victor Anichebe. Saido Berahino was the man on the spot and he calmly slotted in to Mannone’s bottom-right hand corner four minutes before half-time. The second-half was once again high on energy, if slightly lacking in quality. It was not until the 73rd minute that either side created a clear opportunity, though, as ex-Sunderland man Craig Gardner looped in a cross for Berahino to tap in at the far post. A defeat would have been unfair on the visitors, who were strong in the tackle and dangerous on the break.

FULL-TIME! And that's it! Sunderland and West Brom take a point each in a surprisingly high-tempo opener to the season.
94'
Sunderland have done a good job of keeping West Brom at arm's length in injury time. The visitors certainly deserve a point.
92'
It's frantic but not very composed as West Brom push forward. They get a corner off Pocognoli's cross.
90'
Five minutes of added time to play!
87'
An almighty scramble in the Sunderland area is cleared before Victor Anichebe gets a knock to the head as Mannone punches the ball away.

GOAL! Seb Larsson equalises and it does come from the left-hand side as Van Aanholt gets in behind again! He pulls it back for Seb Larsson who passes it into the net.

Alan Irvine makes his final two substitutions with Yacob and Sessegnon coming on for Gardner and Dorrans.

Sunderland threaten down their left-hand side with van Aanholt again. If they are going to score that looks to be where it will come from.

Pocognoli gives away a needless freekick against Will Buckley on the right hand side of the West Brom half. Baird heads the ball away from Larsson's cross.

Irvine makes his first move, with captain Brunt coming off for Chris Baird. Three points would be a great start for the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

GOAL! Berahino again! They've put Sunderland under very little pressure but are now ahead. Ex-Sunderland man Gardner loops a cross to the far post where the young striker is on hand to tap home.

72'
It's another change for Sunderland, with Adam Johnson going off for another debutant in Will Buckley. The former Brighton player will be a threat on the break for Sunderland.
69'
Dawson cuts the ball out with Van Aanholt threatening again. He's looked bright for the Black Cats.
Sunderland Substitution
67'

Poyet makes the first move, with new-boy Jack Rodwell coming off for even newer boy Jordi Gomez. The Spaniard making his debut for the club after a move from Wigan over the summer.
65'
Well, there's a game to be one here and substitutions to be made. What will Irvine and Poyet do?
17:22

Van Aanholt is giving Sunderland good width on the left-hand side but he's ruled offside here as he gets in-behind the West Brom defence.
59'

Fletcher heads in at the back post but it's an easy decision to rule the goal out for offside. The striker with the giveaway glance to the linesman...
57'
A good spell of possession for Sunderland ends with a corner, as Wickham's shot deflects wide.
55'
Victor Anichebe uses all of his strength to roll Roberge but he scuffs his shot wide from the right-hand side of the area.
53'
Olsson has to be alert at the near post as van Anholt tries to pick a Sunderland player out from the left-had side of the area.
51'
Sunderland get their first corner of the game and it leads to a chance for Wickham. The ball goes high to the far post where the striker sidefoots high and wide.
48'
Mannone gets himself in a horrible mess after Dorrans' looping cross into the box. He's awarded a freekick but there wasn't a great deal of contact on him.
47'
Manchester United could do with John O'Shea and Wes Brown back right now, they've looked a solid partnership today.
46'
West Brom kick-off the second-half, with a win very much up for grabs.
45'
West Brom had the majority of the play but until the penalty they were barely threatening the visitors. Very hard to call this game right now.
45'
Half-time! Without having extended periods of great play, that was an entertaining half which saw a fantastic goal from Lee Cattermole cancelled out by Berahino's penalty.
43'
West Brom are on top now. Berahino shooting straight at Mannone from just outside the area.
43'
Baggies fans were furious with referee Swarbrick before that goal. Gus Poyet not much of a fan now. It seemed as if he was going to book Anichebe for a dive initially, but the penalty was given.

Berahino scores! Finishing very calmly into the left-hand corner.
39'
Penalty for West Brom! Slightly dubious one as Anichebe is pulled back by Roberge!
38'
Ex-Sunderland man Gardner goes close! Vito Mannone having to tip his swerving effort over from 25-yards out.
37'

Wisdom strays offside down the right-hand side. He hasn't been able to offer much support thus far.
35'
Oooh! Brunt fires just wide from 30-yards out, cutting across the ball slightly too much. The chance came from Sunderland giving the ball away of the halfway line, a habit they need to cut out.
34'
West Brom still haven't had a shot on target yet and Sunderland haven't been pushed too hard in the last five minutes...
32'
That's three West Brom players booked already.

Steven Fletcher is gerring the treatment from West Brom today, as Graham Dorrans goes in heavily on the Scottish striker.
27'
Encouraging signs for West Brom. Anichebe is holding the ball up well and Berahino is making threatening runs off the ball.
26'
Ball given away by Sunderland on the half-way line. Anichebe looks to break through but Wes Brown intercepts well.
23'
West Brom buld-up play on the edge of the Sunderland box before feeding the ball through to Berahino on the right-hand side of the area. It's the most frustrating of efforts as he lashes it into the side-netting from an acute angle.
21'
Rodwell alongside Cattermole looks a good combination for Sunderland when driving forward. West Brom are dominating the ball, though.
17'
West Brom applying pressure with a couple of corners. The first goes right across the box with Mannone scrambling, the second leads to nothing.
14'
West Brom are trying to be assertive, but they haven't been able to put the Sunderland defence under too much pressure, yet.

GOAL! A fantastic goal as well from Lee Cattermole. He probably won't score again this season but that doesn't matter right now, as he lashes in from 25 yards. A cross is cleared out to the midfield man and he fires high into the top-right corner.

Oh! An early penalty shout there for West Brom as Berahino goes down in the area. Nothing given.

And we have kick-off!
16:00
Alan Irvine gets a lovely welcome from the West Brom fans as he walks to the dugout for the first time this season. Will the love last long?
15:58
The teams are out on the flawless Hawthorns pitch.
15:56
Had the Baggies lost 18-0 at Manchester United last season rather than claiming a precious 2-1 win they would have been relegated instead of Norwich City. Sunderland finished five points clear of the Canaries but looked in terrible trouble before a late surge up the table. If either side can win this game it could well be decisive for staying up. Doom-mongering already, I know...
15:46
Ideye will be sporting pinstripe and neon orange quite a lot this season. Lovely.
15:38
When it comes to Jack Rodwell, well... nobody has seen him play for quite some time. A player with a great deal of talent, but, after two years with very few starts and several injuries at Manchester City, can he be the creative force in central midfield that Sunderland lacked last season?
15:34
West Brom manager Alan Irvine admitted he had never seen Ideye Brown play before he completed his £10 million pound move to The Hawthorns. Will we get to see him play today?
15:27
We have a pair of new-boys starting for Sunderland too, with former Chelsea left-back Patrick van Aanholt and ex-Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell getting the starting spots they craved.
15:26
There are two debutants in defence for the Baggies with Andre Wisdom and Sebastian Pocognoli filling in at right-back and left-back respectively. Record signing Ideye Brown takes a place on the bench for the home side.
15:18
WEST BROMWICH ALBION: Foster, Wisdom, Pocognoli, Gardner, Dawson, Olsson, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Anichebe, Berahino, Brunt... Subs: Baird, Yacob, Ideye, Myhill, Davidson, O'Neil, Sessegnon. SUNDERLAND: Mannone, Roberge, van Aanholt, Cattermole, O'Shea, Brown, Larsson, Rodwell, Fletcher, Wickham, Johnson... Subs: Pantilimon, Bridcutt, Jordi Gomez, Altidore, Mavrias, Graham, Buckley.
15:12
Hello and welcome to the start of a new Premier League season at The Hawthorns. Alan Irvine takes charge of his first game for West Brom after Pepe Mel's short spell at the club was brought to an end over the summer. The Baggies and today's opponents Sunderland both flirted outrageously with relegation last season and will be hoping for a more serene season this time around.
