WBA
SUN
90+6'
Morrison blasts a free kick over the goal, and the referee whistles for full time. Sunderland look doomed, and West Brom will benefit from the confidence of playing them.
90+5
We're into the final minute now. As long as they don't score my match report is golden.
90+3

Goal! Morgan Amalfitano gets a deserved goal. Anichebe backs into O'Shea, spreads the ball into the winger's path, and his shot is so well struck past Westwood, that he can only get his fingers to it.
90+2'
West Brom have a throw in the top right of the pitch, and play the ball back to defence, keeping it there.
90+1'
The first of five more minutes. West Brom are just keeping the ball without fuss.
90'
Altidore attempts to barge through on goal, but he's closed down easily. Amalfitano brings the ball forward.
89'

Sessegnon is applauded off by both sets of fans, replaced by Berahino.
West Bromwich Albion Substitution
88'
Sunderland struggle for space as they are outnumbered. Sessegnon rolls the ball for Ridgewell to cross, and Morrison strains, only able to head the ball wide and high.
87'
Amalfitano on the right, gives the ball to Jones and back again, and the winger is tackled.
87'
Ridgewell runs forty yards unchallenged, lays the ball off to Sunderland, whose cross is headed away.
86'
Anichebe backs into O'Shea on the edge of the box, and goes to ground. It's unclear what the correct decision is, but the referee gives nothing.
85'
Apparently Paolo Di Canio has a net spend (NET SPEND!) of around forty million pounds. He's spent over a hundred million in total. That's not really good enough. West Brom are in total control.
84'
This game is over now. Sunderland have again given up, and they have fewer than no ideas. What's a minus idea?
83'
Ki has limped off. Di Canion implores him back on. I'm not sure that's wise.
82'
Ki is down injured. This could get funny/awful for Sunderland now.
81'
West Brom have so much space. Anichebe has the ball just inside the box, spreads the ball to Amalfitano, whose return ball is rubbish.
80'
Sessesgnon slips the ball into Anichebe after excellent footwork, but the ball bounces his off him for a Sunderland goal kick.
78'
There's a small child crying because his team are losing. Pathetic.
76'

Goal! Liam Ridgewell seals the victory for West Brom. Amalfitano collects the ball on the right, beats two players as he runs diagonally towards goal. He stands the ball up, and as others flap at it, he blasts the ball into the goal at the back post.
75'
Play has restarted, and West Brom will be severely disappointed if they fail to win from here.
73'
Fletcher is down after that volley. He clattered into Jones in the process of sending the ball over. He's hurt his shoulder, and he'll need to come off. Sunderland, however, have used all their substitutes and they're down to ten men.
72'
Cattermole does well to set Johnson free on the right. It's a great cross for Altidore, who misses, and Fletcher runs on to the ball - you expect him to score - and he sends it over!
71'
There's little action now. The crowd have quitened, and the teams are without inspiration. A ball forward finds Diakite across well to block off Anichebe.
70'

Cattermole replaces Gardner.
69'

Anichebe replaces Anelka, Sinclair and his haircut are replaced by Yacob.
West Bromwich Albion Substitution
West Bromwich Albion Substitution
Sunderland Substitution
68'
Another excellent cross, with Jones towards Anelka at the back post. His header is going well wide until a Celustka deflection sends it just wide of goal. The corner is cleared well.
66'
Sessegnon spreads the ball wide for Amalfitano, whose accurate cross for Sinclair is glanced away from goal.
65'
Jozy Altidore almost scores! Picking up a low cross, a few yards from goal, and his shot - after taking his sweet time - is deflected wide. Altidore wanted a penalty for a handball but the referee is not interested at all.
63'
Johnson's cross finds Gardner just inside the box, but he hits the ball straight up into the air, and that's that. West Brom send the ball forward to the Sunderland 'keeper.
62'
Mavrias wins the ball back, and finds Gardner. From distance and in space, he slices his shot well wide.
61'
Chance for Sessegnon. A throw in allows him to roll, Diakite, his marker, but his volley is well over. That could have been a second for West Brom.
60'
Amalfitano lifts the ball across the goal, but it's too high, and Johnson clears. Sunderland are back under pressure now.
59'

Borini is replaced by Altidore. It would be difficult for him to offer less than Borini has today.
Sunderland Substitution
58'
Sunderland wallop the ball long with Colback. A waste. Sunderland have lost the spark they had momentarily, and Sinclair attacks down the left.
57'
Johnson uses his natural cowardice to avoid tackling, and West Brom are in possession of the association football ball again.
55'
Mulumbu's long ball for Anelka is easily cut out by Diakite. Sunderland have come back into the match, and West Brom are struggling again.
54'
Morrison waits ages to give the ball to Amalfitano, free for the cross on the right. He overhits it for a goal kick.
53'
Borini is tackled by the byline, but Mavrias wins the ball back almost immediately. He has started this half excellently. He has the ball back on the left, but his low cross evades anyone in a Sunderland shirt. Including those in the crowd.
52'
Another foul for Sunderland, and they take it short, trying to keep possession.
51'
Gardner takes, and it's clipped on at the back post for another corner. Myhill punches the ball away, but it's fouled at the same time, earning a free kick.
51'
The second corner is headed away at the back post. Mavrias has the ball back, and Amalfitano's sliding interception just clips him, and Sunderland have a free kick at the corner of the penalty box.
50'
Mavrias, on the left, gives Colback time and space to cross, but it's put out for a corner, which is then headed out by Mulumbu.
49'
Mulumbu is back! Congratulations to science and modern medicine. Colback's pass is deflected out for a throw.
48'
Mulumbu is on the sidelines, receiving treatment.
47'
West Brom have their first attack of the game, but Mulumbu is injured in the process, caught late by Gardner and he moved the ball forward.
46'
The change, apparently, is a tactical one, rather than due to an injury. Giaccherini wasn't notably worse than the other players in the Sunderland side.
Sunderland Substitution
45+1'
A cross, from Johnson this time, is again too high and Myhill has it. The ref calls for half time. West Brom deserve the lead, and Sunderland faded after their bright start.
45+1'
We're into the last minute of the half, and Giaccherini's cross for Borini is too high, and Myhill claims.
45'
Giaccherini is replaced by Mavrias, and West Brom kick off.
45'
Borini is fouled just outside the centre circle, and Sunderland have a free kick.
44'
Anelka flicks the ball on to Sessegnon, who runs forward, jinks past/into O'Shea, and doesn't get the free kick he wanted.
43'
Westwood sends the ball straight out for a throw. Morrison aims the ball at Anelka but it's intercepted. Both sides seem ready for half time, as the quality has slipped now.
42'
Nicolas Anelka is slipped clear, but as soon as he takes a touch of it, the linesman indicates an obvious offside.
41'
See the 36th minute.
40'
Sunderland win the ball back. Johnson's pass from right to left is also right to the crowd. Throw in for West Brom.
39'
Mulumbu finds Anelka on the right with a measured pass, his low cross is to the near post, anticipating a Sinclair run that doesn't come, and Diakite clears for a throw.
38'
A long ball to Fletcher is taken away by Mulumbu. West Brom are keeping the ball with short passes amongst the Sunderland players. It's impressive stuff, but comes to nothing Borini attacks down the right, but West Brom do excellently to win the ball back.
37'
Sessegnon brilliantly breaks the ball from left to right, and is absolutely clumped with the second pass right, but the cross back to him in the centre is caught just in time.
36'
Nothing happened.
35'

West Brom have a free kick on the halfway line, and promptly give the ball away. Johnson then gives the ball away, and we start again. The ball is cleared up to Sessegnon on the left, and Ki can only bring him down cynically, and is rightly booked.
33'
Sessesgnon wriggles into the box and crosses towards Amalfitano. The ball is out on the right hand side, and Anelka picks the ball up, and angles a ball towards Sinclair, but the ball is deflected into Westwood's hands. At the other end, Borini toes the ball around Myhill, who just stops his challenge before he clips the striker. He was that close to giving away an penalty.
32'
Morrison wins the ball in midfield and passes to Seessegnon, who finds Anelka, who is tackled. Anelka has disappointed so far today. Celustka, under pressure, flicks a cross on to concede a throw.
31'
Sunderland are keeping the ball in defence. Johnson attempts to turn his man, and Morrison punts the ball out dismissively.
30'
McCauley has a chance from the corner, but nothnig comes of it. West Brom are now the superior side, and need to add another goal to make Sunderland fall apart.
29'
West Brom win a corner from the attack. It's headed away by Gardner. West Brom come back, and Mulumbu spreads the ball to Amalfitano. The Frenchman comes inside from the left, and blasts it goalwards - deflecting onto the post and over!
28'

Sunderland win a free kick in their half. Sessegnon was looking to break after Myhill set him free, and Colback obstructs him, bundling him to the floor. Colback is booked.
27'
Mulumbu dithers and is tackled outside his box. Giaccherini, on the left, crosses for Johnson, whose firm strike is deflected just wide. Sunderland's best chance.
26'
West Brom look less nervy now, as you might expect, but Sunderland are still pressing them in the attacking half, and they're struggling to keep the ball. Anelka is called offside after picking up a pass from Amalfitano.
25'
Steve Clarke looks miffed on the bench. Paolo Di Canion looks miffed on the bench. Miffed.
24'
Sunderland have the ball in midfield, only lose it when Gardner sends a ball long that's headed back to Myhill by Jones, a move that was almost intercepted.
23'
Sessegnon hacked by Celustka on the left wing. Sunderland have a free kick, thirty five yards out. Amalfitano takes, the ball is headed down to Sessegnon on the edge of the area, but it's blocked and cleared.
22'
That goal was against the run of play, but they only have themselves to blame. Sessegnon of course gave a #mutedcelebration.
20'

Goal! Sesegnon scores on his debut. Amalfitano crosses from the right, and Anelka attacks at the near post. It then hits Sinclair on the shins, and Westwood repels instinctively. Sessegnon, who started the move in the first place, follows up and clips it past the 'keeper.
19'
Ji almost frees Gardner, but the ball is marginally too strong. A long ball is hit to Anelka on the halfway line, who wins the free kick. West Brom now attack.
18'
Giaccherini takes, but the low ball is easily cleared. West Brom break, from Sessegnon to Amalfitano. He twists and turns, but Colback is alive to the danger and blocks his cross. A few seconds later, Sessegnon pulls down Johnson as he chases the ball.
17'
A low cross from the right by Adam Johnson is cleared for a throw. Sunderland are the team putting the pressure on, which is a rare treat for their fans. Gardner is fouled by Morrison, and Sunderland have a free kick fifty yards from goal.
16'
Eventually the ball is cleared, and Sessegnon slips as he receives Anelka's pass. Sunderland are back in the attack, and West Brom are struggling so far.
15'
Three players stand around the ball, but Giaccherini takes. He hits it straight at the wall. Diakite then hoofs the ball into the area, and Jones heads it out for a corner.
14'
Sunderland have a free kick, just inside the D, as McCauley lunges in on Borini. No booking.
13'
Sunderland rob McCauley in defence, and they are almost through on goal before the move breaks down quickly, and West Brom send it long again.
12'
Giaccherini clips a ball over for Gardner, approaching the six yard box, but as he brings the ball down, he slips, falls over, and the ball is out for a goal kick. That was neat approach play.
11'
West Brom show some patience, find Sinclair, who immediately gives the ball away, with only Anelka to aim for.
10'
Rare West Brom possession. Content to play in defence, but they play another long ball and Anelka is called for offside.
9'
Myhill sends the ball straight out for a throw in, as Ridgewell couldn't get there in time.
8'
Another Johnson long ball, this time aimed at Borini, is claimed by Myhill without bother. McCauley is down injured having run into his 'keeper, but will be fine.
7'
Borini chases the ball down on the left, but is tackled on the byline by McCauley, and then fouls him in frustration.
6'
Westwood is lucky there. A long ball is hit for Anelka, and Westwood chests the ball down when he meets the ball outside the box, and Anelka intercepts, Westwood slips, and is just able to claim the ball back. It could have been an easy chance for Anelka.
5'
The next corner is cleared, but not far. Amalfitano is then found offside on the left. Sunderland free kick.
4'
Anelka's cross to Sessegnon is headed behind by Celustka, and West Brom have their first corner. The corner finds McCauley, but Ki gets to it just in time. Another corner.
3'
West Brom's first moments of possession. Sunderland are pressing them whenever they get into their half, Sunderland have the ball back, Johnson aiming a long ball to Borini.
2'
Myhill clears terribly, and Sunderland have a throw near to West Brom's box. Sunderland's first cross is cleared, and Sunderland begin their attack again from the back. Myhill keeps a header back in play, just.
1'
Here we go, we kick off. Well, the teams kick off. I'm just watching. Scott Sinclair's hair is pretty daft.

Stephane Sessegnon respectfully celebrates his debut goal against his former employers with @Scotty_Sinclair #WBASUN http://t.co/0SWzJAioGb

We're just five minutes away from kick off, so make sure your senses are finely attuned for the nuances of my writing, and for the subtleties of the football we're about to be given. Exciting!

Do you like Twitter? No, I don't either. However, at times like this it's useful to give you the chance to tell me exactly how well or terribly you think I'm doing my job, or to tell me what you think of the game. My Twitter handle is @lxndrnthrtn, you can get in touch if you like. Or, equally, not.
14.45
For his part, Steve Clarke doesn’t seem to think Sessegnon didn’t care, as Di Canion found while at Sunderland, but described him a shy figure: “"He's quiet but, when I was young, I was quiet as well. That doesn't make you introverted or a difficult character. Some people are quiet, some people are loud. Everybody has their own character."”
14.40
Before the game, Di Canio called on his players to show passion and heart, adding “We must never forget that we have to give everything we have from the kick-off against any side, but especially in this game. We can get something from the game if we give it our best focus and help each other on the field.” While passion would be handy, defensive solidity and attacking creativity would be of more use.
14.35
Whoever loses this match might find themselves as the first manager to be sacked in the Premier League this season. The likelihood is that it’ll be Di Canio, not Steve Clarke, who finds himself out on his ear, as he has no previous success at the club to point to. Yes, he kept them up, but that was merely through his side being not quite bad enough, amongst some fairly severe competition.
14.30
Sunderland have John O’Shea, sent off against Crystal Palace in his last match, back in central defence. In the games I’ve watched, Modibo Diakite has been their best defender, able to intercept, tackle and block effectively, if not actually pass.
14.25
For West Brom, Stephane Sessegnon makes his debut, having left the Di Canio Militia Experience at the close of the transfer window. With West Brom struggling for goals, they will hope that he can kick-start their season in attack.
