Do Liverpool Just Play for Europe

Having heard Moureen going on with himself, and I can't abide his attitude, but the one thing he said is true and it bugs me a little,
Are Liverpool playing just for Europe, he rests players with priority for europe, giving their players less workload than say Man Utd and Chelsea, it was the same in 2005, and proof again when having won it you would think the crest of that success would ride them high in the League,
But no that did not happen, they played so poorly they had to appeal to UEFA to let them defend their Trophy, rightly or wrongly that is a fact.
Do you think Manchester United would win the European Cup if they did not fight hard in the League, the players would be less likely to be injured and far fresher.

I am not having a POP at Liverpool for the sake of it, I am glad they put out the Rent Boys, but that said it is sort of playing for convenience as Liverpool are clearly not yet good enough for the League title.

It does show how well Manchester United are doing by Liverpools own benchmark of lets just play for europe and the rest is a bonus.

    Steve

    • I don't think any team would set the target as Europe is the only goal. It is far too dangerous. But when you look at the English teams that got into the Champion League final in these 3 years, none of them are in the top 2 in EPL. Liverpool was number 5 in 2005, Arsenal was number 4 last year and Liverpool is number 3 this year but is far behind the top 2.

I think no English teams can compete in 2 fronts now. The schedule is too tight. There is no winter break and once a team is not being scheduled with any mid-week European games, then EPL or FA squeeze in a game. How many mid-week games did the MU or Chelsea players play since the beginning of the year? If not Europe games, then there were league games, FA cup games and international games. I cannot think of any mid-weeks which those players did not play.

Barcelona, last year seldom played any mid-week La Liga games. La Liga even let them to finish up league games after the Champion League final which passed the deadline of FIFA before world cup. On the other hand, EPL refused to let any game played after May 13 even though there is no major tourament (Euro, World Cup) this year.

Unlike the other leagues, EPL do not help teams to achieve double. So for this fact, teams can only compete for either one at the end of the season.

I don't think it is a problem in UEFA but it is a problem in EPL or FA. In Italy or Spain, they spread out the domestic cup games in the whole season. But in England, there is Carling Cup in the first half and FA cup in the second half of the season. There could have even 2 cups touraments going on at the same time. Liverpool and Arsenal played 2 times in 4 days to compete in 2 cups (Carling and FA). Where in the world can have that happen?

MU played one less round in 1999 in CL. There were only 24 teams back then. Right after group stage was the quarter-final. MU played 2 games less before.

    • the champions league has been devalued. both finalists are not in the top two and shitpool aint finished in the top 2 for years.should be about the top two being in it only. maybe teams would concentrate on winning there own leagueinstead of making sure of 3rd or 4th and then concentrating on winning a cup they should not be in.

    • If that is the case, maybe Platini getting elected has been a good thing because if as has widely been suggested he cuts the numbers from each domestic league going into the CL,the Dippers will have to try harder in the EPL.

Withdrawing one place will mean that either they or small club will become Uefa cup specialists and who cares about that one these days ?

Better still if Platinni makes it top two only. Then you would see some fireworks in the league.

    • Your first team got beat 2-1 at Portsmouth as well, or did you not bother that day ?

Still least Liverpool are in the final, you saddoes are out LMAO

    • My answer Red would be no, we don't but after Jan -- it's all we had -- Rafa has only had 3 seasons and has taken us to 2 Euro finals -- but he still needs time to settle to the EPL style -- I mean it took SAF 6 years for the cup -- so I for one am willing to give him time....

-- the money of Chelsea has been a new phenomenon in his time here (which means (painfully) what SAF has achieved this year by beating them to the league is arguably a greater feat than your treble)

      • You act like Liverpool don't try in the League, we're third in the league, granted you're pretty far ahead but third place ain't like we're not consistently winning games and bring home the points.

And as for your your Brilliant football, where is that tonight? A great team brings it on the night, I hope you come from behing tonight and win it because to see the looks on your faces when we beat you in the final will be priceless. But wait, you will have had the FA cup final a few days before so our victory won't mean anything right?

    • Sunderland fan here.
I dont no why they dony buy genuine world class players like manu cos i mean they have the money and stuff. What i mean is they have lots of very good strikers but none world class. None of there strikers are upto fergies standard.Or chelseas or arsenals .........thatw will remain the differance beetween them and you lot.It is like he says its like bennitzes,. is choosing it this way.they have a squad system like chelsea but chelsea do have world class players. They need a british manager. Me personally i love the Irish lol See yer next season boys cany wait for old trafford. Can we just give you the three points and just all sing Keanno songs together for 90 minutes, now how good would that be.

    • I don't think they just play for Europe but they seem to be more of a cup side. They put there all into the big prem game and the Euro games but there consistancy lets 'em down in the EPL so they fall back and end up top four without really going for top spot

      • Of course we dont just play for europe. However when we have qualified for the champions league, put are too far behind to catch the leaders then obviously we rest players for th cl, its common sense. Nobody has mentioned how maureen moaned about it, and then rested 7 players himself against bolton (including drogba and lampard). Next year hopefuly liverpool will stregthen enough to compete on all fronts, dont believe your own hype, you are not that far ahead of us you know.
