Manchester United Message Board
Do you think United will play a full-strnegth team in the Charity Shield match? It was suggested to me yesterday that United might prefer to play an under-strength team than a full-strength team which then lost. (I'm not suggesting it would lose, just reporting on a theory.)
On the other hand, with Chelsea having goalkeeping problems (Cech out for a month, Turnbull having a nightmare against Ajax, Hilario collecting his bus-pass) and other injury issues (Alex, Benayoun - who?) it might be an opportunity for United to get one over on Chelsea and start the season positively.
The winners of the last two Charity Shields between these two clubs went on to win the league and a minor cup later in the season.
Frankly if its between beating chelsea in a glorified friendly or having all the players ready for the opening game of the season then its the latter for me. And I`m sure that`s the way SAF will look at it which means utd could actually field quite a strong team as it will probably be the the big names who missed the tour who will need the game time.
