    The will to win

Easy, your post about the will to win hits the spot. There is a subltle but important difference between will and expectation. In war, large armies that expected to win have often been defeated by smaller armies with the right tactics and the will to win.
Leeds went to Walsall expecting to win. The Saddlers had key players missing from their team so Leeds expected them to be on the back foot. This was pure arrogance and simply stupid - has no one in the Leeds camp heard anything about confronting a cornered animal?
I have respect for Walsall. Its team knew exactly what to do: go for our throat and then retreat into its burrow.
To win, Leeds has to start every match with the will to win, not the expectation of winning.
Like boxers squaring up before a fight, even in the warm-ups Leeds needs to signal its determination to win. The only Leeds player I've seen doing this is Andy Johnson who during warm ups strays into the opposition's half to give an eyeball-to-eyeball message that we'll come out fighting.
We certainly didn't come out fighting at Walsall and lost the game because we showed the opposition no grit or determination, only puffed up arrogance.

    • Well who can argue Andrew ? Grayson is thus far proving to be a good manager, he has only been with us a few weeks and, yes, a couple of blips but there is a better " feel" about Leeds these days. Not sure if you my post re Mifs 024 reached the board, so at the risk of repeating, I do not have any contact and could only think Nige may have. Again, this thread has got so long it is becoming difficult to follow !

    • B4ts, do you know what happend to mifsv024? He used to post sound comments regularly then just stopped.

    • B4ts, you get it right every time. As a third division side Leeds is not going to get prime players signed up. We're going to have to take them from the ends of the spectrum: young or old. Our Academy has produced some gems in the past and I agree with you that this is the way to go to develop a great team for the future.
The trouble is that young players are not, generally, reliable and are easily intimidated, or provoked into making mistakes, when they come up against more seasoned sides - Ben Parker is a good example of this. So we also need old hands or a charismatic leader (like a Cantona) to work as a catalyst and keep them on side.
Bates doesn't need to spend big (foolish sums) but he does need to spend smart, and soon, if he wants Leeds in the upper half of the Championship so that he can sell up, with a profit, and retire.
Getting the right catalyst is our worry and, I suppose, Grayson's headache.

    • Hi Easy, your comment is well observed/deserved. I do come across as if I'm writing a cliff-hanger ending to a soap but that's what it feels like following Leeds at present. Maybe I should think a bit more about what I'm going to write before I start writing but (I don't know if you experience this) whenever I do I end up writing b'locks anyway.
I also agree with you about Hull. Brown seems to have bust his flush, and probably the Club, by signing Bullard for £5M. In pursuing his ambition he's managed to buy a white elephant, and alienate the rest of the team. I hope Grayson can be smarter, or not as egotistical, and build the Leeds side on what is achievable realistically. He will, as you say, still need dosh from Bates.

    • BATES IS A VULTURE! He will only move on when there is no meat left on the bones of Leeds United left to pick! Hiya Bats!

    • Not really sure I want the kind of investment Bates would sanction at Elland Road. Cast your mind back over his stewardship and the answers is always the same, free transfers, loan signings and players out of contract. Just who has come to the club under a fee ? Oh yes. I am sure there are a couple although I cannot remember who they were they were that good !
Sorry lad's, it ain't gonna happen, SO, we need to get (more) used to what we have been getting and rely on young players coming through the ranks and making the cut. I think sooner or later Bates will move on. I just hope he does not sell the Silver, although I am sure if we do not get promoted this time the likes of Delph, Beckford and Howson will be sold for a few million to shore up the Bates retirement fund !

    • There are some signs of recovery, the play-offs look likely (just!) and there is some talk about hitting second spot. But what is this based on? Is there a signing in the offing that will be guaranteed to sort out our still leaky defence? Is there some contract for a guru on the sidelines who will restore our players' will to win? Is Bates investing in anything that will give him a return?
Tune in Next Year to Find OUT?

Andy you should have been a scrfipt writer for the Street, or maybe Crossroads?
But you are right, there are too many questions and not near enough answers, if any!
Grayson was a big improvement on Macca, but as long as Bates is holding the Purse Strings he will have to make some better moves to get hold of cash! No or Low cost Players are all very nice, but wouldn`t YOU be a little sceptical if somebody came along and made you a present of a Race Horse and said he`s a winner? If he was why is he being given away! Just look at poor old Hull with this Bullard geezer! wanted to say something else but this is a Family Channel!
Thing is if Bates doesn`t open his purse and do something he is going to lose any investment he has made cos as you say L1 & L2 gates are not bringing in the Dosh!

    • Hi TG4U, after last night's game against Oldham I'm not sure what to make of things - an away draw is better than a loss but two points less than a win. Are we happy to settle for second best? It's better than losing outright but it still feels like losing.
After the game, Grayson talked, mysteriously, about a couple of loan signings he's negotiating who weren't available for this game but who may have made a difference. What's this about? Making a difference after the event is making no difference at all!
Why weren't these players signed during the Januaray transfer window?
As you say, the players we've signed have cost nothing - or relatively nothing, given the monies Bates's Leeds is raking in from fans. It just doesn't seem to make any financial sense. If Leeds doesn't get out of L1 this season then 20K plus attendances at Elland Road will dwindle to the kind of crowds Bradford might expect and we all lose out - Bates especially!
