    Pompey's impressive season so far...

Despite the loss to Manchester United on the weekend, Portmouth's excellent start to the season - in which they have continued their (always) good home form of recent times and their greatly improved their away form - has set me thinking... They survived relegation by the skin of the teeth three seasons in a row since their promotion back in the 2002-2003 season, but as far as I am concerned they are no longer the minnows of the Premiership - they now look strong, fresh and confident, and some are already comparing them to Bolton (who also had a couple of relegation scares initially but are now a force to be reckoned with).

So as far as I can see, a top-half finish this season is certainly not beyond Portsmouth's grasp, but the big question is - can they (and indeed, will they) ever be able to consolidate this new lease of life by emulating Bolton and Middlesbrough's achievement of qualifying for Europe??

This is good news for football either way - it's really good to see the "smaller" clubs doing so well in the top-flight
