    Alan Ball

I remember him as the greatest Pompey manager of my lifetime, the way he kept the side going after back to back 4th places in the old Division 2, to get us promoted in 1986-7 was remarkable.

His crowning glory was in 1998-9 when we were bottom of the 1st division table with 24 points at the end of January, he steered us to safety with a dramatic last day win at Bradford, to many Pompey fans he was the Messiah.

But my abiding memory was when I lived in the north of England and he was on a local football show just after being sacked by Stoke. He was in tears as he described his love of Pompey and their fans, and how he would go back there in a second if asked to manage them again.

Alan was 61 and died from a heart attack.
