    So Seb's a go

Looks like The Magpies opening Championship game was the second of the 2-match ban for Basson's red card at the close of last season, so that means he's available to play.

Now reviews seem mixed on here...but let's give the lad a chance to settle in, after all it was his first match with the team (I didn't see the game so I have no comment on his or the team's performance).

I'm finally getting that churning feeling in the pit of my stomach; the feeling that says the season's about to open. All teams are reset to zero and most are full of hope and optimism...their fans certainly are...me? I reach for my favourite antacids and say "let the games begin!" (Oh to be a Tottenham fan)

    • Kentish, I think that EY was referring to the past regardng Daws and an experienced "leveller". Remember, he was all raw agression when he first came in, and did make a good few mistakes (got carded quite a bit too). Playing alongside Ledders tempered that agression and he's learned to harness it and use it where its needed. Bassongs problem will be that he probably won't have that luxury. So I for one am hoping he develops on the job without too much fuss or repercussions to the team.

Anyway...I'm really up for the season now...got to give my report to an old work mate who I exchange views with...I'll give him the Ideal World one (Spurs win everything) and then I'll give him the real world one (Spurs could win everything, if they're lucky, stay injury free, and improve game after game througout the season; also, ffs start winning away...especially against the minnows...while a point is a point, I'm going to be right narked at only getting a point at the likes of Birmingham, Wolves, Hull, Stoke, Blackburn, Portsmouth...you get the idea...3 points away to those types of teams would see us doing very well indeed [it goes without saying that WHL has to return to the fortress it once was at the same time].

    • Gotta agree with old timer looking forward to this season. it will be a change to have a relativley settled squad that have played together for a while, and not having last minute aditions that take half a season to fit in. if we start this season as we ended last we could do well in the league, european spot as minimum and i fancy us for a cup as well.

      COYS.

    • I also rate Daws Kentish - he did have a loss of confidence, but I believe he is a quality CB. While he is getting fit, I am hoping that Ledley can be strong enough to play with Bassong, as I think he will be able to help Bassong's development and maturity.
For now BAE is my choice at LB - I think he had a good season last year, and got stronger as the season progressed. RB is interesting - I think it has to be Corluka's spot to lose, and he would also be my first choice for CB if Ledley couldn't make it. But we have Hutton and Naughton - both of whom aren't too shabby - and then there's Chimbonda. With Daws and Woody fit we are looking as good as we have in several years at the back. And if Bale ever developed into what his potential promises....
I also rue the loss of Malbranque - he did have a few cock ups, but he always gave it his all when he was on the park.
As for Cole - I'd be surprised if he were to come across - and if he did he's still (I think) got a while to go while he's going through rehab.
And we seem to have a lot of good youngsters that could be brought on as the season progresses.
All that being said, I am looking forward to the start of this season more than I have for a while - I like the fact that we have kept under the radar during the pre-season, I like the line up, and I like our chances for the upcoming season! And I'm jazzed that the opener will be broadcast live over here in the states!
And if we were to get Young and get our backline fit, I think we have a very good chance and would be very competitive challenging the other contenders for a top 4.

    • Have to say Old Fan the Young, Modric, Palacios, Lennon combo looks exciting IF we can get Young. If we don't I reckon O'Hara could do a good job - he didn't do too badly at the back end of last season if I recall. And the fact that he's willing to stay and fight for his place speaks volumes. IMO it was a mistake selling Malbranque to Sunderland, but that's in the past now.

Anyone rate the talk of Joe Cole coming to WHL? He's not been offered an extension to his contract if reports in the evening press are to be believed ...

Danny Rose has the makings of a good LW but I have to say he didn't do as well on Sunday as I'd hoped.

Have to disagree about Daws needing a more experienced player alongside him. I've always rated him even when he's had a bad day at the office. He played with Ledley in the 2 5th place finish seasons and they were an awesome combo so he couldn't have been that bad. When Robbo suffered his goalkeeping crisis of confidence and Ledley's knee problem reared its ugly head, I believe that affected Daws as well as the rest of the back 4. The lad is a good defender, scores some goals too and IMO just needs to get his confidence back. The injury setback in the pre-season must have been a blow to him.

    • Good point - so - if we were to get Young - what would the middle look like? Wouldn't it have to be Young, Modric, Palacios, Lennon? (not a bad line up). And I totally agree about not flipping Lennon over the the left.
So - if we do not get a L sided player - who plays there? Modric - who I think is way better and more effective either playing in the middle, in the hole, or simply left to roam around - or ......? I've read a couple of good reviews of OHara in the pre-season - again - he's not the finished product but does he have the potential (you cannot fault the lads heart and desire and love of Tottenham).
Also - Rambro - I believe Defoe is in the England squad right now.

    • I'm with you Rambro - give him a chance. Gotta say I'm kinda excited - it's been a relatively quiet closed season and run up to the opener. I'm thinking Pav may surprise a lot - he's had the first rest he's had in a couple of years - and you've gotta love the fact that he put off flying out to join his national team so he could play against the Greeks. I like the young lads from Sheffield (and the young lads that 'arry has been playing in some of the pre-season games), like having Crouch as a different way to approach the attack, love the way that Modric is playing - I think he's going to be a major influence throughout the season - and I think overall we are looking pretty good for the season - as good as we have for a while.
Of course - being a Lillywhites supporter for almost 50 years, I've always been an optimist!
Just do NOT understand what Bentley is still doing at the Lane - I guess we couldn't offload him anywhere.
Also - interesting to see if the concept of Jenas being part of a deal for Young (someone raised the concept on one of the other threads) pans out.
Anyone know what happened to Dos Santos? I loved watching him play for Mexico (will he be playing for them Wednesday) - has he been loaned out to Ipswich again? Are the rumors true that he likes to suck down the sauce and is notorious for showing up late and/or hungover for training?
