    2-2 @ The Reebok

I was surprised that neither Gomes nor Dawson were playing today. Both had great games up at Preston in the CC and despite the 5-1 scoreline Preston weren't holding back. However, to be fair Cudicini kept a clean sheet during the Burnley game last weekend so I'm not surprised 'Arry thought he'd stick with him.

Both Gomes and Dawson were on the bench today (as was Bale who also played all of the Preston game) so maybe 'Arry is playing softly softly to really get them all back to full fitness. With Modric and potentially Woody looking to make a comeback after the international break we could be up to pretty much full strength. Nice position to be in :-)

    • Kentish, me playing devil's advocate here e: your comment on Cudicini/Gomez...do think Chelsea will play Hilario in their next league goal based on the shutout of Liverpool (far more impressive team t get a shutout against), knowing that PC is available? Doubt it. That said Gomes is coming back from injury not suspension, however, does that mean you as the reular starter loses your place in the team because your understudy's done his job (putting in decent shifts given the chance he wouldn't have had if not for the injury)? Just asking.

      • Take your point Rambr0, though Cech being suspended meant Chelsea had no choice but to play Hilario and it'll be good for his confidence to have kept a clean sheet even knowing he'll probably be back on the bench after the international break.

However, I seem to recall that Cudicini kept Gomes out of the team for a while last season because he had a good spell while Gomes was injured and it took a while for Gomes to get his place back. Same for Hutton with Corluka and to a lesser extent Bale and Assou-Ekotto so far this season. Guess it also applies to Dawson, who was an automatic 1st choice CB partnering King until Woody arrived - though with King unable to play more than 1 match a week it meant he got more of a run-out than might have been expected.

Nice position to be in I suppose and it's been a while since that was the case for us. But as a 2nd-choice player I believe that if you do the business and impress on the pitch you should be given the chance to prove yourself further and keep the place until you prove otherwise.
