    Games in hand

    Hello all,

Merry Christmas, happy new year, and all that.

By the next time we play in the league, Arsenal will have played both their games in hand (although City won't have). I reckon this is great news, as we can't compare our lague position to theirs and the other teams around us while there's the 2-match difference, but the bad news is these games are Portsmouth away and Bolton at home - on their current form neither of these would have me quaking in my boots. This is followed by a home game to Everton the day before we go to Anfield.

This means that by the end of the next PL weekend gap between 3rd and 4th - currently 1 point - could have stretched hugely, conceivably up to 8 or 9 points (Utd have Wigan at home & Birmingham away, although they're not guaranteed points, particularly in Brum, and Chelsea only have Hull away).

What does this mean for us? On the one hand, it's useful for the table to be a proper reflection so we can see where we really stand, we should still be in 4th by the end of that weekend and if we're not we'll only be a couple of points off the pace, and perhaps it'll help put the eyes on the prize rather than the outside chance of anything else this season (I keep reading things about us being title contenders at the moment! Let's not run before we can walk).

That said, thge reality check might be a bit off-putting for the players; it can't be nice to see the top spots slipping from their reach without even playing a game. It's definitely demotivating to see someone go from 1 point above us & 2 games in hand (nice little numbers) to potentially 7-10 points difference, if that combines with a lull in form (which hopefully it shouldn't, what with a new year break - at least a break compared to how busy the Christmas period was) it could have a devastating effect.

Personally, I think I'd rather know where I stand, I suppose I'm just warning you that we might be in a pretty different picture in a month's time.

And for what it's worth, I'm still not seeing us get a top 4 finish this season, although if I'm honest now it might be more about not wanting to get my hopes up... I've just not been convinced by our performances, which is why I think we've struggled against the better teams (drawing at Villa & Fulham, losing to the 3 teams above us, etc).
