  • 1st of all the 3pts are the main thing & blackburn on their day can make things very hard for u.

not our best performance, we dominated posession but didnt make enough good chances.
all 3 goals were helped by awful blackburn defending.

overall deserved to win & didnt pick up any new injuries which makes a change.

    pros,
    3 important pts
    dawson-solid again
bassong-quietly does his job & becoming reliable
    wilson-another good holding midfield job
    defoe-still scoring
    pav-another 2
    bale-looked lively & a big threat

    cons,
could have made more of our posession
again looked complacent & nervous when in lead
didnt fight hard enough in 2nd half
pav- yes he scored 2 but he was very poor today, missed 3 sitters & showed the other side to him.
so inconsistent. against better teams he will get 1 chance & have to take it.
ref webb- another shocker! determined to not give us a penalty!
harrys routine of taking defoe off near end when we are hanging on to lead. just my opinion that he should stay on as with his pace & finishing he could kill the game off of at anytime.

    • I think Defoe came off becasue he took a knock (probably right he was coming off anyway)...I only saw us get nervous for about 4-5 mins after they got their goal...other than that, i thought we quite easily kept them at bay...yes, we didn't go looking for 9 goals this time out...and probably could have had 5 or 6 if Pavy Daffy didn't miss half-chances and if we got the penalty shouts (the first of which Bale did go down a little too easily...the second would have had me curseing Webbs heritage if I was at the game, it was such a stone-cold call. Pavy's obviously not as comfortable on his left foot as his right and you'll see where his misses came from; I think two of the three were on his left...if not all three; conversely the two scored were right-footers.

Also, saying he was terrible is a bit harsh in my opinion; he did a lot of hard work...tracking back, stopping plays before they started going the other way or re-directing them. He dropped deeper and held the ball up and distrbuted it well...so for me (and I'm not one to bang on about strikers missing; strikers miss, scoring goals is not an easy endeavour, so all in all I'd say he was unlucky not ot be our fourth striker scoring a hat-trick this season (that clearance by Chris Samba in the second half was crucial and well played by their captain...but Pavy's touch was sublime).

The player, for me, that had a quiet-ish game, was Modric; he didn't play badly however, just didn't put his stamp on the game the way I thought he would.
Still, we're keeping the pressure on the other 4th placefighters and that's a good thing

    • No bookings either SB. Good from our point of view, especially with Wilson 1 yellow away from a 2-match ban. Let's hope he doesn't get too carried away that he's unavailable for the Gooners game - though that will be rescheduled if we beat Fulham on Wednesday week.

Bassong worries me though - yes, he's getting more settled at CB but he will insist on holding on to the player he's marking, especially in the box. Didn't do it so much today but in the last couple of games he would have given away 2/3 penalties.

Not sure what it is that makes Pavy play so inconsistently - he could have had a hatful by half time if his finishing had been more clinical but you've got to hand it to him with his scoring rate recently - 8 in 6 games. Would that he could have done that from the start when we bought him. I hope 'Arry continues to give him a chance in the starting line up. Somehow I don't think he'll be going anywhere come the end of the season. He and Defore clearly like each other too which I feel is a good thing in a strike pairing.

All in all not as fluent a performance as we've had in the past but 3pts is 3pts and keeps us in 4th. Now, if Fulham and Pompey can do the business and beat Citeh and the Scousers this weekend we'll breathe a little easier :-)
