    • Nothing wrong with being optimistic about 3rd - yeah it's a stretch, but it could still happen.
And why is the CL important? Because if we get there it will attract some players and possibly retain a few others - everyone wants to test themselves in Europe and the CL is the premier competition in Europe. Plus we will get some additional income, and our financial guys really seem to know what they are doing when it comes to managing our money (we ain't called the yids for nothing!).
More money + CL = better players = better chance of really pushing and competing against the historical dominance of Manure, Chelski, and the Gooners, & maintaining top 4 spot - better chance of holding off the money of City (with the money they have they will eventually get it together). Plus - more European games = more experience = improved performance = more competitive.
So - in the long term, if we want to regain the glory days of the '60's, and compete for the EPL top spot, we must get into the CL.
      I think we'll get #4 & FA Cup - but if I had to choose - it's a no brainer - gotta be 4th.

      • Sorry to burst the bubble Old Fan, but I reckon CL footie might (note I say might not will) only attract better players to the Lane if we a) finish 4th this year then get through qualifying and b) get through the group stage to the knock-out rounds. Plus, we have to continue to finish in the top 4 over the next few years and be consistent - ie. take over Liverpool's place in the so-called "big 4".

OK, I grant that even qualifying for the Europa League might help in the short term as long as we don't lose in the early rounds, but CL is what the top players want year in year out and they won't come near us unless we have any hopes of achieving that. Plus of course, CL footballers want top wages and I thought we had a cap on outrageous weekly wages a la Ar$e (the one thing I'm in tune with the Whinger on).
