My '...play like Spain ...' comment was a joke (or should I say intended as a joke).
'If Defoe stays (linked with Reading) we will then have the same front 3 available to us as we did last year....'
The difference with the strikers this season is that we started last season with Pav and ended with Saha. Ok those two may be discounted as being makeweights, but they were available and scored a few goals between them (actually Saha had a very good goals per minute played ratio).
This season, Saha has gone and so has Pav. So even if Ade does sign, we're a striker down. Personally, I would expect the squad to have 'redundancy' in each position, so basically 4 strikers available.
As for Kane, he's young, so won't take a squad place - a good option to have around, but if he's not going to get regular games, then he'd be better off out on loan IMO.
We've semi balanced the midfield with Krancjar going and Sigurdsson in.
It will also be interesting to see what happens then with the likes of Cudicini, Gomes,Piennar, Bassong,King, Gallas, Bentley and Jenas. I see that Alnwick went. Maybe Caulker will become part of the squad this season as well.
I must admit that I had expected a lot more early activity in the market from us - but maybe the inactivity is simply down to AVB needing time to assess what he has in the squad.
Soz, not feeling at my sharpest today.
Whilst you may be joking regarding 6 mid-fielders and no strikers, it could become more common place. Increasingly teams are playing with only one front man and midfielder's supporting them, so who knows, we may be witnessing the dawn of the striker-less formation. I hope not!
Pav and Saha, were, as you say, bit-part-players, who never really got the opportunity to really contribute IMO- I felt Pav should have had more chances- but he's gone so we'll move on.
Rather than sign another ok-ish, aging, established player, with no sell on value (Saha, Nelson), I'd rather we utilise some of our youth in those positions. IMO Kane will develop far faster and benefit more from training with and playing with us rather than some division 2 team. If a top end Championship team wanted him on season long loan I may feel different, but only if he was a first team regular for them.
I'm excited by Gylfi's arrival, I think he has more to offer than Niko- who incidentally I think is a good player, IMO Gylfi is more dynamic and far more exciting to watch, did you see some of the goals he scored last season- ooooosh! Take a bow son!
I agree with your proposed outward bound list, I might be tempted to hold onto Gallas or Bassong. Currently AVB can pick from Daws/Unit/Vertonghen and Caulker, I'm happy with those, but injuries can leave you thin and I'd want more than 4 recognised CB's to pick from. I see Khamulo is with PAOK for a season- what a strange signing he was!
I think Levy may be holding his cards close to his chest, Manure, Citeh, Liverpoo and the goons are all still yet to play their full hand, maybe Levy doesn't want those big payers competing with signatures? But I agree, a few more faces will be requires, especially if all the 'deadwood' goes.
Jes' sorry about the length of this (not the first time I've had to say that) ha ha- Joke!

That wasn't 'my' outward bound list per se. Just the players who either didn't seem to feature for a while, who had already been linked elsewhere or who were 'aged' and had been brought in to fill a gap. I see from last night, that Jenas played (and that Falque featured). So maybe AVB has different ideas about the players he wants to keep.
I was pleased to hear that T'Hudd was back as well - although I'm not sure now where/how he fits, but then I never expected to see Jenas in a Spurs shirt again.
