My Arsenal Team of the Season (revised edition)

    Goalkeeper: Manuel Almunia
Why: He has been solid when given his chance this season. His penalty save against Spurs in the 2-1 win was particularly memorable.

    Left-back: Gael Clichy
Why: As well as defensive solidarity, he is also an able option going forward. His crossing can match that of any left winger.

    Centre-back: Kolo Toure
Why: He is a solid defensive pillar. He doesn't have many goals to his name but his screaming free-kick v Bolton shows the side that originally made him a winger.

    Centre-back: William Gallas
Why: Apart from denting a couple of ad boards and probably letting the team (and himself) fall apart rather than holding them together in a Terry-like manner, thus costing us the small loss of a Premier League title, he's a class act in defence.

    Right-back: Bacary Sagna
Why: He gives 110% every game. His running down the wing makes him a constant thorn in the opposition.

    Right winger: Theo Walcott
Why: I'm not sure why, but he's scored a respectable number of goals this season and he could be the fast wide man who can get into the box and finish off chances next season.

    Central midfield: Cesc Fabregas
    Why: Need I say anything?

    Defensive midfield: Mathieu Flamini
Why: He's jumped on a 747 on the route of AC Milan but this season he was sparkling. Kind of like the one-season-only Alan Hansen in the days before AW.

    Left Winger: Alex Hleb
Why: His skill can bamboozle anyone on the day - ask Reading's keeper, who was beaten once, twice and three times before being reduced to a helpless heap watching the Belarus wizard put the ball into the net.

    Supporting Striker: Robin van Persie
Why: Injuries are keeping him pinned down. Imagine a full season with RVP - Europe here we come!

    Main Striker: Emmanuel Adebayor
Why: This whole board seems hell-bent on getting him into the squad that I'll put him in.

Although Edu will get his chance.......

    ;)

    • im still not sure on traore, he looks good but i have seen him play more bad games than good.

so he came on the other week and crossed a few balls in, need to see alot more of him before i can rate him.

I have no idea what Wenger is going to do with Vela, im hoping its down the left like you say, we need it big time.

    • I can't disagree with that selection, or your reasoning. There are selections too close to call.

Song might have snuck onto the bench instead of Senderos if he'd been in more games and played that well. Poor Philipe is still liable to mess up at crucial moments.

I think AW would have Eboue in there somewhere, but I don't think any fans would pick him.

The thing that strikes me is the lack of a left footer at left midfield. It puts too much pressure on Clichy to get forward and I don't think he gets the right level of cover from Rosicky, Helb or Walcott.

Vela might be the man to take that place, or maybe even Traore with a bit more experience.

    • yeah but i was only really ruling out players such as Eduardo and Van persie because they spent a big chunk of the season out and therefore would not make the "team of the season"

      if they were all fit....

      Almunia
      Sagna
      Toure
      Gallas
      Clichy
      Hleb
      Flamini
      Fabregas
      Rosicky
      Adebayor
      Eduardo

Bench - Walcott, Bentner, Van Persie, Gilberto, Senderos

its hard to decide between Van persie and Eduardo but i think Eduardo was about to hit some great form before what happened.

    • Most players have had time out for injury, so could be eliminated from the team of the season.

Maybe set a minimum of 10 starts to make the team.

Give me your fit XI then.

    • ok well if he was talking about a "when fit" team then it would be very different.

    • James, please don't confuse me with Slayer!!!

Forget all the injury problems. Let's take the players who when fit are the best XI.

My team the same as yours, except......

....I would include RvP and I would possibly have Rosicky in for Walcott.

RvP hit the ground running and had a great start, scoring plenty. Just starting to show his old self before injury strikes again.

Special mention for Sagna (amazing first season) and Clichy (a fine example of heart and skill to his team mates)

On the bench would be Walcott, Eduardo, Bendtner, Song and Lehman. These guys can rotate with the first XI without creating any real weaknesses.

Eduardo was just starting to get in the groove before his leg was smashed. Cool in front of goal and a great finisher - we are crying out for that.

Song has been a revelation at CB and Wenger said on Arsenal TV that we wouldn't put him in that position without knowing he can do the job (indicated that he might not have the ability to cover the distance require in midfield) - not enough games to convince me totally yet.

Walcott has been carefully introduced to the starting line up but hasn't had enough starts to make my first XI - The only player in many games to really take on defenders and make things happen - he is going to be rampant next season.

Bendtner - I think he has a better first touch than Ade and more aware of the players around him. Again, not enough starts to really prove his place in the starting XI although it has been pointed out to me that his scoring rate is 1 goal every 2 starts, that is generally against weaker teams.

    • All of them have A levels in French I see!

    • well im sure it did come across that way but thats because im pretty sure me, and alot of Arsenal fans would agree that its been his worst season, i cant see how anyone can debate it.

like i said, im not saying he is crap and not a class player, im saying that by Arsenal's standards and the standards that he is capable of....this was his worse season.

your statements just confused me thats all will, one minute you debate my opinion with....

"At the beginning of the season he was on fire when he scored 7 in 10, which is the only time in the season you can really judge him, so to call it his worst season is harsh"

      then you say

"I think it's been his worst too"

      and then

      "Let's agree to disagree "

you seem like you want to tell me you dont think my opinion is correct but then you totally agree with me...then tell me we should agree to disagree?

it just confused me thats all.

but they hey, 8000 people just died in china and over 100,000 in burma so i think we should just be mates and glad we dont find outselves in times like that. Puts everything into perspective really.

      ok my team.

Almunia - cosistant and confident, rarely made mistakes and always looked focused.

Sagna - sharp, fast and powerful, great runs down the wing and our right back for along time to come.

Toure - maybe should have been the captain? great as always

Gallas - despite a sulk and some silly comments, played well and scored some important goals.

Clichy - apart from one mistake he was brilliant all season

flamini - AC milan just bought him and last season he couldnt even get in our team....says it all

Fabregas - good season, shame he didnt keep up the goal flow but he got an important one against milan and was another player i thought could have captained the side.

Hleb - Consistant and was a good play maker all season, could have scored a few more goals, he had the chances

Walcott - shined for the last few months and was patient during the first stages of the season, always made an impact when he came on and i think he has hit good form.

Adebayor - 30 goals. and non of you would have though that he could have achieved that this season, including me.

Bentner.....YES Bentner. He has made an impact in games when he has come on, he did well in the cups and kept his mouth shut when i thought he would start kicking up a fuss about not playing enough. If Eduardo played the whole season im sure he would have been in this spot but i dont think we thought we would see much of Bentner this season and for most of the time, i think he did what he could.

    • Easy to nit pick other peoples choices James.

      What yours?
