    Holding midfielder

There does not seem to be any further discussions about purchasing a holding midfielder since we lost out on Melo.

I think that we need this more than a new striker, as I think Vela and Bendtner will have breakthrough seasons.

    Any thoughts or rumours?

    • Ooops sorry just saw your post (after posting a similar one).

I agree 100% we need help in midfield more than upfront.

This not to say we don't need help upfront:

Bendtner - unproven ands early signs not great but could surprise although I doubt that.
Vela - too young to be target man and also unproven.
RVP - not a real striker type and (could still be) injury prone (?)
Arshavin - like RVP more of a creator who can score than a true striker like Ade
Walcott - unproven as striker but could do a job.
Eduardo - our best 'true'' striker but big doubt about his availability as a result of injury.

I think we can play with out a true striker if we have to becuase the above guys can score and after all we did ok last year in the number of goals we scored and Ade dodn't score too many.

We conceded way too many and this IMO was as much a result of our lack of depth in CD as the weak play of our midfield. Let's face it when we are not in possesion our mifield is light weight and that needs to change.

I though Song showed some signs late in the season but we need more depth and someone better than Song preferably if we want to survive.

    • i tend to agree...the holding midfield positoin is probably where our biggest weakness is...rather than goals.

Prior to the start of the 08' season i thought bendtner was useless...but he has showen signs of becoming a very good player ( i meen that )...and with VP, AA and ed, theo-- goals will come.

Hopefully AW will sign a experienced DM, but in all probability he will not want to Jeopardize the future of ramsey, denilsion etc

      • Yaya T, Mascherano and Essien/Mikel are excellent DM midfielders accepted?

However, they all sit at the back of a three man CM triangle, their role is clear, breakdown/slowdown opposition attacks then pass to creative players to the front of them or to the wings.

Arsenal on the other hand, have two players in CM most of the season, the players have to attempt to be the best of bost worlds being offensive and defensive.

Stick Dennilson in a defensive midfield role and he would be perfect.

    • Problem is that we were discussing this last season and nothing happened, and it now seems it's the same old story once again!

Personally I think we totally fine with the strikers that we've now have and with Ade gone it does mean Bendtner has got his chance to shine and also Jay Simpson will move up the ladder and might actually get a few games. But if AW really does want to add another striker the only player should be added is Huntelaar as he is pure class and i'm quite frankkly amazed no other big club are going for him????

Holding midfielder??? Who's out there that's the problem? We were sniffing out last season that Roma midfielder Aquilani that could be going to Liverpool?
