It should be a wake up call but what can you do when youre managing money? Gibbs needs another back up LB for sure and Santos I dont think is good enough, but Wenger definitely favours Gibbs to develop into Arsenals new A.Cole. He wants competition for Gibbs but I dont think he wants such good competaition that Gibbs doesnt get a look in. Santos provides that another player may just steal Gibbs place. As for the Santos situ, you now have Gibbs, someone, and Santos on the books. Two players will get fairly regular playing time, Santos wont yet hes sitting there not working for his money, draining resources and being a burden on the club. Can Wenger sell him? Well he hasnt been able to find buyers for Squillaci, Bendtner, Denilson, Chamakh, etc so what makes him think he could easily get rid of Santos? It doesnt make any financial sense to have a senior player wasting away on the bench, Arshavin and Squillaci are markers for Wenger to rethink Arsenals wage structure and not markers you want to revisit if you can avoid it.
