    Mertesacker

Hannover’s interest in Arsenal central defender Per Mertesacker came out just last week and now German club Wolfsburg are also pondering over a move for him.

Arsene Wenger has reportedly lost faith in the central defensive duo of Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen due to their disappointing defensive record this season and is searching for new players to fill that role, thus likely to put the 28 year-old on the market.

Arsenal have been linked with summer moves for Marseille star Nicolas N’Koulou and Swansea skipper Ashley Williams and Mertesacker could be moved on at the end of the season.

Mertesacker is still rated in his homeland and could be tempted to make a move back to Germany.

    • Hannover and Wolfsburg?!

      Says it all really.

    • Fourth best defence in the league (behind the second best by only 2 goals) and that's disappointing?

Personally, I don't think the problem is (solely) with our defenders or how many goals we concede - it's more about the situations in which we concede. We concede some silly goals due to a mental fragility in the whole team. Strikers squander chances in big games, midfielders don't hold or press the ball and pressure builds on the defence. Of course, in those situations, they will concede eventually.

I'm no AKB (trust me) but I definitely think a lot Arsenal fans have lost all perspective when it comes to our defenders. For a player as slow as he is, Mertesacker is acutally ace and for all his mistakes, there aren't many *available* better than Vermaelen. I think the whole team needs to learn how to be resolute in defending against big teams rather than pinning blame on just individual CDs.

      • Well Timi, I was merely pointing to an article I had read about one player who seems not to have settled well in the EPL.

I think we all hoped that Per would solve our problems with defending set pieces, which we have been shocking at for years now. Unfortunately, I have noticed along with a few others, that he doesn't have any pace. That's OK if you have vision like Tony Adams had. When Michu chips that ball over your head and runs around you to score though, it does hurt a bit.

Personally I like Mertesacker and he does a decent job 90% of the time. Perhaps AW thinks that 10% mistake rate is too high for a defender he paid £8m for.....Then again if that is the case, how can he justify trying to sell for £12m?

If he plays today, I would expect him to not make the same mistakes he did last time.

I agree that the failure of the team cannot be pinned on one player. However when a business fails, it's usually the person running it that gets the blame. However some fans still think our failure is down to the other teams in the league, not us.

        Very strange.

      • Well said that man.
